Here is your next assignment. Read the story below the link and tell me what is wrong with this article. I will tell you up front I have not changed anything about this article. I just cut and pasted it from the web page link you see below. Here is some background info on the person and product. Good luck and no cheating on this test. I am watching you!

On a recent show of the Pitchmen. Forbes Riley was pitching an excercise tool (someone else invented, but she was backing) that she insisted they sell at $29.95. Billy and Sulley said she was pricing herself out of a market for a infmercial. They thought $19.95 or $14.95 would be better or even $10. Forbes threw a fit and said she would not have HER name attached to a $10 product. They ran some expensive test ads and guess what, the Pitchmen were right. At $19.95 they were spending $250 worth of advertising dollars for every $1 they were taking in. She priced herself right out of a market.
Not to be stopped Forbes vowed to keep pushing the product. Look at the article tha has come out since the show and ask yourself if she is putting HER name in a good light?

Rodger, I’ll buy the spin gym when I see it at Odd Lots for $3.99. I’d buy it as a reminder of the risks of misplaced “faith.” I wouldn’t use it to exercise – it’s too flimsy and there are better products.

Does anyone know if Riley ever found a good outlet for the spin gym? Or has she found another product, a better one that might bring her success?

“You can place you orders on myspingym dot com if you want and this miracle product spin gym only cost you $29.99 excluding shipping and handling charges.” I think ‘Peter’ read your post, Roger, and ran back to change it? LOL

I think Mark S nailed the first blog correctly. I’m not going to pull apart that writing. They are an International blogger.

Two of the three sites are just review bloggers. It’s something that they enjoy to do, usually on their own time.Does it really matter what they claim? They are not professionals, just bloggers. Review bloggers also like the word, gadget, and it’s growing in popularity. They see it as trendy, not harmful. When some marketing companies approach bloggers, asking if they would like to review products, they also refer to them as gadgets. So this is where it starts :-)

If people want correct information, they should always go to the official site.

Sold out due to popular demand? Well that’s just not reliable fulfillment, now is it.
I personally read it like this…we sold our 2000 unit test run…yayyy. Now place more orders so I can order more from the manufactuer…please? :-) I may be wrong, of course.

The price is too high for such a cheap and cheesy looking product and consumers are not stupid…well, for the most part.
…but I’m sure that the show didn’t help her at all either.

Since this show aired has anyone purchased the product and tried it?

I see the Spin Gym as an “GIVEAWAY” product for another more expensive item.
“Call right now & you will get a free SPIN GYM when you order your Thigh Glider.
You can work your inner & outer thighs at the same time you work your arms.”

Roger this is totally unacceptable. It lacks proffesionalisum in more ways than one. It is confusing and repetative. A copy writer or maketing person could have helped her put her point accross with a better punch to take acction. Also using the word gadget is not the proper word. How does it keep you away from food? You can not say this, because it does not do this.

Good assignment, thanks Roger.

Great post, Roger.

Setting the very poor writing aside, here are the things I picked out from the article:

1. It incorrectly identifies Forbes Riley as the person who created the Spin Gym. She only licensed the rights.

2. They claim that using the Spin Gym will keep you away from food. This is actually true because you can’t shove food into your mouth while you use it.

3. Bad idea to repeatedly call it a gadget. It cheapens the product.

4. “As low as $29.00?” How many people actually qualify for this super-duper, low price?

5. I’d really love to know how I’m supposed to use this thing while I’m doing laundry. Will Forbes Riley come to my home to load my washer/dryer so I can get a great upper-body workout?

I agree with all the comments about how bad the English is and how misdirected *FORBES RILEYS* advertising is. There is obviously no marketing plan whatsoever and *FORBES RILEY ™ * just did whatever *FORBES RILEY ® * felt like doing at any given moment. This is a great example of how not to market your product.

The saddest thing about the whole fiasco to me is that *FORBES RILEY’s ℠ * selling a $30 + yo yo that at best has questionable use as an exercise machine and *FORBES RILEY ☺ * made it onto National TV.

Having re-read all this now I’m confused; Is this an ad for Spinmaster, or is it an ad for Forbes Riley?

First, there is no ‘call to action’; it doesn’t tell you where to buy the product. Further, the material does not seem to be presented in the right order or prioity. It should be explaining the benefits to the consumer that would be a reason to buy it. As written its more like ‘see why I’m great.’. The very first sentence in the copy is about Forbes Riley. The very last sentence in the copy is about what the product does for you.

On Pitchmen she stated that she wanted her name recognized the same as Suzanne Summers and Thigh Master. If people see all these errors her name may not quite reach that level.

Also the self-referencing makes “Forbes Riley” seem a tad pretentious, like “a Tyler Perry” movie.

Absolutely not, who in their right mind would pay that much for something like this?

You would think that with all the money they have probably spent on this product already they would have spent a few minutes to proofread and work on grammar before putting this stuff out for the whole world to see. It doesn’t even cost any money to proofread!

I’m willing to bet you can get the same amount of exercise, or slightly less, by just pulling a rubber cord several times. Everyone has these rubber cords, or straps, already somewhere in their house or you can get them for like $1 at hardware and home stores.

It reads exactly like the copy was written in another language and translated into English by software.

the spin gym seems to be made for people who like to exercise without really exercising. it’s like walking real fast and not getting anywhere so buyer be aware.

Hmm. I just watched her website video. I no longer think the “stubborn inventor” drama was fiction.

Ed, “torture” is a strong word, but her ads are painful to read. What’s with the “weighs less than a pound” in one ad, and “weight is no more than 1lbs” in another?

Howabout:

Want Michelle Obama arms? Get them – FAST! – with the Spin-Gym!!!! Weighs only 14 ounces, easily fits in purse . . . carry it everywhere!! Fun and easy!! Use it at work . . . while on the speaker phone . . . while watching tv . . . in the bathroom!! Lose weight – use it at the dinner table while everyone one else eats dessert!!

Men are not in her target market – this product is clearly too lightweight. And (most) guys don’t want their arms to look like Michelle’s anyway. And guys won’t buy it for their wives/girlfriends b/c they’’ll end up in the doghouse (So you think my arms are FAT, huh, take this, POW!).

(Sorry. Maybe I should have skipped that third cup of coffee.)

Thanks, Roger, this is fun!! And I HATED the one business class I took! Got a C-. Should have flunked. (8^(

It was torture reading the content on the web sites. Steve is right they need someone on their team who can write. I think they are in crisis mode, running all over the place with their claims and price. Something tells me they are sitting on a warehouse full of these things. They got greedy.

Looks like she has more issues with advertising. I just found this here http://www.makli.com/spin-gym/

“You can place you orders on myspingym dot com if you want and this miracle product spin gym only cost you $20.95 excluding shipping and handling charges. "

Now, go to her site and what do you see? https://www.myspingym.com/flare/next
“Offer Details: Now you can get a workout anytime, anywhere with SpinGym®, for only $29.95 and just $9.99 S&H. "

This is a clear case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. Should we tell her?

Companies get sued over a lot less these days.

“Spin Gym . . . keeps you away from food so you can lose weight.”

That statement is beyond stupid. Also, you said Forbes did not invent the product, but was “backing” it. But the ad said she “created” it. So what’s the truth?

Actually, the cynical part of me suspects the whole inventor-won’t-listen-to-experts-and-shoots-self-in-foot aspect was fictional, planned just to build drama for the Pitchman show.

Whatever, I’ll wait until I can buy the Spin-Gym at Odd Lots for $3.99. (;^)
