The Perfect Pitch

I get so nervous about the thought of picking up the phone and making that call. How have you gotten over the major butterflies and made the call? I understand the first 90 seconds of your pitch will make or break your chances of getting in the door. I surely, don’t want to mumble or goof up out of sheer panic.

Here is a link to The Independent Inventor’s Handbook here at EN. It has a NDA in it to use when talking to companies directly. It also covers personally pitching an idea and finding licensing companies. I have, in the past, contacted four companies myself, in order to possibly license, three by phone and one by sending information by mail. All four contacts were very nice and extremely professional and helpful. My own limitation is when I did not have an NDA to use that I knew was appropriate and covered the bases and there were a couple of other reasons that I did not follow up with my ideas.

My point is the companies that I contacted were very easy to talk with and reputable businesses that treated me well. Three of the companies were interested in following up (as I did not initially tell them specifically what my licensing ideas were) and the fourth was larger and had a policy of not talking with and taking inventive ideas from individuals as licensing deals. I also sent a different fifth company an idea via their website, that was not a good step as my idea disappeared when I pressed the submit button and I never heard back from them.

(I had bought an ebook version recently)

How often do you practice a new pitch before you feel comfortable talking about it?

I had an Inventor tell me about a neat way he got over the fear of cold calling companies. He had 5 relatives each give him a phone number of someone they knew. These 5 people agreed to be fake companies. He called each one introducing himself and making his pitch as if they were the contact at a company. Each of these people gave his relatives a critique of his pitch and what they liked and did not like about his pitch. He said the experience really calmed his nerves and also helped him streamline his pitch.

As a clarification, disabled doesn’t mean deleted. All of the content is still there and can be read by anybody. You just can’t add new posts to it. If it’s a relevant subject and a thread has been closed, everybody is more than welcome to create a new, similar, thread. You could even reference the closed thread in a link when you start the new one as Roger has done below.

Jan, These should help. You can use the Search Button on the upper right to search and find even more threads. Unfortunately most of them are disabled to post due to the Spammers. Matt said they are disabling every thread after two months of inactivity to keep Spammers from doing mass posting like they have done recently. So, if you have a thread you like you need to keep it active or it will get disabled.
