Analogies are like...

I was thinking about the excitement that comes with the announcement of another imminent success here at EN. I began to compare it to a beautifully wrapped gift placed in the middle of the room. There is a name on the tag and all we know is that it wasn’t bought in any store. It is a one of a kind and as everybody gathers around, you can almost hear the sound of elves still at work within…when will it be opened? What can it possibly be?
I love analogies! They provide us with the creative insights of those around us. I would love to hear any and all of yours…thanks!

One of my favorite uses of analogies …

Trying to think of the perfect ASOTV item is like when you have your cat completely dressed in the clown costume but the nose keeps falling off and the competition is in twenty minutes.

or

Filling out the competition portion of a submission is like whe your dad makes you stay in the trashcan until you get all fifty state capitols correct.

Typically these are followed by a quick moment of silence while I stand with my jaw dropped in shock/mock realization and then the people who know me laugh and the others look scared in that way people do when you start stabbing the watermelons in the grocery store repeatedly with chopsticks.

~Laughing is like food for the soul.

~Greatness is achieved though patience and perseverence like a climb to the highest peak one is one slip from disaster.

~The back is like the front just on the other side.

~Literal exclamations are like screaming at the universe, that which you manifest will become a reality.

~Kevin is like a bisquit, Nothing else need be said

Like the iceberg which rips open the hull of a passing vessel, the poetry of an analogy is but the tip where the wisdom is mountainous just beneath the surface of the words.

And an over-extended analogy is like a merciless glacier not so gingerly touching the soft under-belly of the vessel, causing it to rip like an old dollar trapped in a soda machine which functions as whimsically as a kindergartener discovering rubber stamps for the first time.

Thanks Michael, as always a great topic! I like that, U-EN.

Thanks Chappy.

Ah yes James, and the readers and partakers of these captured words are like the passengers of such vessels,
that they might be taken to yet another distant place.

That was good, true and funny Greg. Written as good writer would with a twist at the end :-)
Analogies are like the genetic code of communication. Bards, poets, writers and journalist are engrained with this gene. They capture the sum of a story like a fleet vessel’s sail captures the wind between ports.

You find the right fit to what you had in mind. There’s a flash of brilliance. You know in your heart this is the solution. Then the work begins. You stay up late, research, brainstorm, worry: How can I improve it? What can I do to make it better? Will anyone like it? You get others feedback and development help. Years pass, and it seems ready but still so incomplete. But you still send them off to college.

p.s. Love the shoe story, that one’s going to stick in my mind for years like a great fable.

The ASOTV searches are like days… Just as the sun sets and you hurry to get in a last minute submission—- you wake up to a new day, a new sunrise and another ASOTV search!

Certain (“Weird” thread topics) bad dreams are like back aches.

You think you are relieved of them, and then out of the blue, for no particular reason, they rear their ugly head to remind you that unfortunately they are still lurking.

YEAH Michael… that was such a fun day at work a few years back at the Mental Health Dept…. what happened was Marge (the infamous Henny n Maul Pic) accidentally wore 2 different shoes to work… So we all got together and wore different shoes … telling her that she was OK… just had the wrong day !!!!

And each petal of the flower is as unique as the feet of those who would stand in a circle…nice avatar Fairin.

Seeing your prototype work for the first time is like watching a child take their first steps…just not as beautiful.

Analogies are the smells of holiday baking. They are most satisfying to the mind. One scent reminds of a visit to grandma, another of the first time helping with the baking; the feelings evoked give the gift of giving to mind. In the moment each is surprising and fresh but still so comfortably familiar.

So Betsy, you could say that the memory of your Eggies adventure is like watching a movie for the second time with a smile on your face, because you know that it has a happy ending. Did I say second time? ;-)

I remember 2 years ago when I found EN and entered the ASOTV search…the headline said, ‘Do you have the next Emery Cat?’’ I thought—how cool would that be?! Then I entered my egg idea and dreamed.

Fast forward to an EN email today that talks about the current ASOTV search and NOW it’s mentioning EGGIES! Is that surreal or what?!!! Just proves anything and everything is possible!

Michael, I was thinking after you got done thinking, how each one of us inventors wishes the name on the beautifully wrapped gift was ours and how we should own it! That’s exactly what gives us the determination to succeed as inventors. Of course it helps to live in a free country that gives us the right to pursue happiness! Great analogy for sure!
