What does the sound of silence sound like?

I started this thread so that we can talk about sound: thinking perhaps our discussions would give someone on EN an idea for a crazy, amazing invention for a sound toy, tool, innovation. And then, I realized this…

In my lifetime, I have never heard silence. HEARD. SILENCE. That’s an oxymoron. But seriously, are humans able to hear total silence? Isn’t there always going to be some auditory artifact exterior to our senses? Or, internal to our system e.g. heartbeat, blood flow, sub-auditory cross-talk emanating from our brainwaves? Quiet isn’t the same as silence. Even when it’s super quiet, I still hear things. Try it. See if you can go 60 seconds without hearing something.

[EDIT: @bron-yr-aur. Your comment gave me an idea for an invention. Thanks!]

@haroldptan
Sorry to hear about the sick children. Nothing worse than watching little ones not feeling well.

I found that virtual instrument at andre-michelle.com. Tenori-on has the physical instrument available for purchase here. It’s about the size of an iPad. Get the free Android app here. Lastly, you can watch the Tenori-on product demo on YouTube.

EDIT: I’ve got to start proofreading before posting. My previous post was incomprehensible.

@imajane
You’re right. It is hypnotic. I got sucked in for 10 minutes and made the one pictured above. It reminded me of the rain falling outside my window this afternoon.
