new invention, almost there, but not quite

I’ve been working on an old idea, primarilly I have too much time on my hands. Anyhow it almost works perfectly, almost isn’t good enough for me. It’s one of those ideas that has never been addressed in the market place to any reasonable degree, I guess it was just overlooked. Two people where interested when I told them I had a solution, they don’t know what it is or what it would cost, but they did acknowledge the problem.

I’m not a newbie, and I do know the challenges to any new product development.

From an outsider’s viewpoint, if you were really close to developing a great new gadget that could that could target anyone that cooks at home, not even cook really, more like “eat” but you knew that you simply couldn’t finish the design, afford the patent, or professionally present it to a prospective licensee with an unfinished design or a weakness in the design.

Would you… shelve it for now, risk showing it, turn it over to someone and hope for the best??? I’ve never given up on a design, but this one is so close, and I’m just not where I’d like to be. A major company and fresh eyes might resolve it quickly…

nothing’s is perfect and perhaps it’s as good as it will get, and maybe that’s good enough. I just don’t know

I would think almost all inventors have been there. This is very similar to what i experienced, i have a cat litter invention that i had trouble packaging. I made a rough prototype 2 1/2yrs ago, but wasn’t sure how to present it. After reviewing existing patents, turning it over and over in my head, i came to the simplest possible packaging. I had a firm idea how it could be completed, all i needed was a large packaging machine. I researched the machines on line (thank god for the internet, i wouldn’t have gotten this far without it), bought a couple cheap versions for smaller products, saw how best it could work. I know how to make it complete, but can’t because of the expense. My brother who’s in product development says it’s going to be hard, you won’t have all the equpment, it won’t be clear how to actually make it becuase, if it’s good, there won’t be a way since no one else has done it. hang in there.

Myself, step away from it for a couple of days and go back with fresh eyes. Sometimes that is all it takes to get you back in the groove to solve the defect. If you decide to go forward to a company you need to understand that if you see the flaw so will they. Is the flaw a deal killer? Depends on the company and their willingness to solve a problem for you. It will also affect any chances of showing it to another company because THEY are now partners with you in this product since they improved your original design and solved the problem.

Submit it to ASOTV. Or join and submit to the Edison Insider search! Sooo much less cash than any other route… especially at the stage you describe. Just my 2 cents, Scott!
