Is it cool or not to enter an idea with 3 variations, ways the idea could go, or should I just stick with one?

Now you got me confused Robert. I always used to have the same confusion when I used to file software patents via my company. But my company has rejected so many good ideas, when I try to separate them. But if I combined them, I succeeded. They advised me that its better to have one strong patent, rather than multiple smaller ones which won’t be as strong. They told me that they can always separate them out, if they feel like. The same principle may not be 100% applicable here. But I think its first imp to get a G8 and then think of the rest. Wish Roger sees this thread and advises us on this? |

Thanks Robert! That’s what I was thinking too…if it’s different enough to be a totally different product, I would submit it separately. |

Hey David – great to see you here. You can submit one time with 3 variations and let EN tease it out (and this is the advice I’ve received previously) – perfectly legit in the EN context. However, in a current case I’m making 4 submissions for what could be one prototype/one submission: 3 single-feature and one with all 3 in one. The reason I’m doing this is although they are the same basic product and only one can be selected the variations are significant enough that they could each stand alone as separate products and I don’t want to risk the perception of “feature creep”. I also want to highlight each innovation. Other times I will include separate options in one submission. Just another perspective for your consideration. Best of luck. |

Cool Thanks guys! I just didn’t want them to think I was cheap and trying to cram 3 ideas into one submission. lol |

I have posted an idea with 3 variants too. Different variants are applicable in different circumstances. Mine is also a product line like Raplh mentioned. |

David- Go with your gut instincts. I have one going into the Innovation funds that is 3 different and distinct products…all made from the same material. I will show all 3 in my short video, but it will be up to EN to decide which they think is more vaulable. The point I am trying to get across is that it’s a whole product line already developed…not just one thing. I see prototypes the same way…let EN decide which is more valuable to them. Good luck! |
