Colonel Steve "Chris" Austin

Welcome to OTD! This thread was created to have open discussions about general technology and scientific concepts. Everything is on the table here from proven concepts to abstract daydreaming. Any theory/concept is acceptable to propose or discuss. You can be serious or off-the-cuff. Be mindful that the conversation can go from relevant to abstract in 30 seconds or less. Most importantly, be respectful to one another.

Here’s another article on Borax, Don:

Hope this info is helpful!
Not sure the percentage of germs, etc. it kills though!

@Penster, More great info, I’ve been trying to slow down vids for awhile now, could never find it. Thanks!!! So simple!

@dmccammon
Go to the Borax web site. Click on the Contact Us link and fill out a request for information and sample of the product line that you’re interested in.
Some literature is available for download on the Library link.

Maybe call the Borate mine located in Boron, California and ask to speak with the QA Manager, or one of the engineers at the Pilot Plant.

Chemical question – How good is Borax in a solution as a disinfectant. I’ve googled but am not getting any studies.

Does anyone have knowledge of or any good links to info on micro heat pipes? There could conceivably be a lot of useful inventions developed from this amazing technology. It may be an area to look at.

Hey Kos:

I don’t use windows, I use a mac, but found this tutorial. Don’t know if it works. Would be cool if it did, slow mo is intersting.

capture video
then transfer to computer
import to windows movie maker
drag that video into time line
click tools>video effect>click “slow down” video clip
drag that “slow down” upon your video clip [which was in time line]
check that video clicking play ….
not satisfied again drag that “slow down” upon your video
now satisfied ….
click file > save movie file

Total Lunar Eclipse tonight!!!
For the first time since 1638 – 372 years ago, a lunar eclipse will be aligned with the winter solstice, the longest day of winter. Get ready tonight for a spectacular show. I’m hoping the rain and clouds will clear up before the start of the eclipse. This will be literally, a once-in-a-lifetime event. You can get details about viewing time and 12 stages of the lunar eclipse at the space.com website here.

@inventodd
Good links.
The how to article for making slow motion video via software processing helped me to understand how to manipulate timeline. It is a good primer for how to use slow motion for editing drama or family videos. But, I don’t think the software simulation is as good as true high speed recording I need to capture discharge from a Tesla coil in low light, for example. Besides, the cost of the software may be the same as purchasing a new camera with high speed recording capabilities. I may have to save up my pennies to buy the GoPro HD you linked to. It looks fantastic. But, I’m confused by the range in price ($179 – $299) for the same model. I found the Kodak zi8 while looking at the HeroPro. The zi8 has high definition with 780, 1080 resolution and 30fps and 60fps, and gets rave reviews. See the following slow motion video example.

@papajim
Is there nothing that daunts you? lol.
I wouldn’t even begin to know how to modify a digital camera’s processor/electronics to enable high speed recording. But, I think I will try to find a thrift store score and pick up a broken camera just to take apart. Curious now.

Ok kosmo, I thought your question was a good one, so I thought I would do a little searching myself.

This article below describes in a little more detail about your question.

Hey Kosmo,
Maybe you didn’t realize it, but if digital and even phone cameras don’t now have high-speed filming abilities, wouldn’t it be a neat idea/invention if we were to add that feature! It would open the door to every novice camera person to see an entirely new slow-motion angle of things – of everything! As far as the technical side, since a there seems to be no limit to how fast a digital impression can be captured by fast scanning electronic devices, it may be a simple matter of devising a super-fast electronic darkening/lightening shutter. What do you think?

So, getting back to the original intent of this thread: to discuss technical issues.

Question for the photo/video experts out there in EN land, I’m interested in recording some slow motion video for a product that I want to submit to Live Product Search. The problem is that I only have a cheap consumer digital camera. It’s a point-and-shoot camera capable of recording only in low resolution standard 30 frames per second (30fps). Is there anyway to get 60 frames per second (60fps) out of this camera either through an add on device or via software processing?

I want to be able to record a video at high speed 60fps so that the video will play back in slow motion at 30fps. This would be useful, for example, to capture a hummingbird’s wings flapping in slow motion to observe flight characteristics; to slow down the sequence of a running motor or gears to observe mechanical motion, and for other observations.

My technical question is, how do I record a video in 60fps when my digital camera is only capable of 30fps. If the answer is that it can’t be done, then what are other options? TIA Link to slow motion video.

oh no, you didn’t get rickrolled AGAIN, did you? lol.

Wikipedia uses the words “masked and obfuscated” – I think Wikipedia has been lurking in the hallways of this damned home for old people! Most of the meals are masked because if we knew what was in them, we would probably not eat them but then, they insist on obfuscating us, which is to make something obscure or unclear and to make somebody confused. Not much of a challenge around here. When I first heard the word, I got a rush but that dissipated quickly.

Colonel, this post isn’t at all technical or scientific or a proven concept or even a daydream; however, I HAVE been respectful even though I didn’t have a real contribution.

I think it’s going to be an “I scratch your back..you scratch mine” kind of partnership between EN/Battelle. Yes, EN will help this company find homes for their top-notch, high-tech scientific innovations…but at the same time Battelle will be doing some of R&D for EN which
will broaden EN’s horizons and surely open up some of the gates for some of our more technical submissions—-just my guess after reading the article “The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth” in this month’s Inventor Digest and I quote:

“Beyond the traditional platform, the company most recently inked an innovations deal with Battelle, a Columbus, Ohio-based research and developement organization with specialties in science and technology solutions. This collaboration will enable members’ ideas to get to market faster, and broadens Edison Nation’s scope to discover high-level innovations.”

Then came another quote from Shawn Head, one of our members!! Great article as it explained alot! This partnership sounds like it’s going to be an awesome thing for everyone!

Speaking of articles: Here is one my husband brought to my attention last night. Was posted on MSN headlines yesterday and I thought I would share it because it involves Time Travel!!
Strange discovery involving an old Charlie Chaplin movie…..

Free drinks, where?

@colonel austin
Nice room. I like what you’ve done with the place. Paint’s still wet though.

@papajim
Battelle LPS would be right down your alley. But…this article? seems to suggest to me that the purpose of the partnership between Edison Nation and Battelle is to connect companies to companies (not to individual inventors).

“Edison Nation gives us direct entrée into hundreds of companies looking for new products to develop.” – Battelle

Did I misinterpret the quote/article?

If the partnership is to connect with Edison Nation’s inventors, that is terrific news for the community. I know of at least three people on this site who already have energy related products.

Hi ya James,
Here’s an article about Battelle that EN posted in its Blog section.

http://www.inventorsdigest.com/?p=4626

The Colonel ‘Chris’ started this thread. You guys are so over my head with all this stuff. But, I do think the Battelle connection will be great. Because if it’s a technical or scientific search, the Battelle folks will offer another dimension.

So happy you joined EN James! You will really become addicted! Just watch out for Julie in the lounge! Just kidding, she is our resident comedian. Yep, James there is even a virtual Inventor’s lounge that The Colonel started too. As far as forums go, it is absolutely the most viewed thread on the site. A great place to go and just be silly. And best part, drinks are always free!!!!

Hi Betsy,
I saw on the blog that EN has plans to work with Battelle in the future. Have you heard anything about how EN intends to involve us in that process. An LPS for Battelle can sure open the door for some of us members with energy-related inventions. By the way, thanks for starting this techno-forum!
