Inventors by nature question everything. It’s in our DNA. Now the Emmy award-winning show Everyday Edisons is giving you yet another chance to ask away in an attempt to curb any confusion toward the invention process.
If you have a question about any aspect of the invention or product development process (this includes design, engineering, branding, packaging, manufacturing or getting a product to retailers), post it right here on the forum and it may be selected to be answered by an expert in the field on the upcoming Season Three of Everyday Edisons.
Please submit all question by January 30, 2010
Thanks for participating!

Square one would be nice. “I have an idea for a product I think has potential, now what?”

Hi marla, I have a question. When considering a product is there a usual manufacturing cost to selling price point ratio that you look for or does it vary?

Michael, Even though your good question might be chosen for the show, Mark Reyland recently started a very informative forum about “Its all about the math” and it might give you some information you don’t already have.

Hi Marla, here is my question – what do you do when your idea is really an improvement on an existing product? Even if it is a significant improvement, is that considered a new invention?

I am very new to the invention process and find it very over whelming. My question is where can one find the infomration they need for each step of the process. Example. how to find a manufacturer in China or else where abroad and where to get information on the best way to do things like packaging and branding. Hope these are not too vague and thank you.

Are you guys still in the process of planning Season 4 casting calls of Everyday Edisons or will this 3rd Season sadly be the last one?

Does anyone ever get past the first three or four stages of the process once an idea is submitted? Is this just some sort of way for Edison Nation to get $25 a pop from hopeful inventors?

Hi Rose…yes it’s for real and you can make it to the end and get a product on the market! I’m from the list that Ken posted so nicely.
I’ll be on season 3 with an idea I took to the Providence casting call in 08 and my As Seen on TV winner from the first ASOTV live product search is due out later this month, if all goes to plan.
Hang in there and submit your ideas if you have them. If nothing else consider the $25 a fee to have an idea evaluated. It’s a great deal for that alone let alone the chance to actually have your product made.

Jerry,
Now you got some gumption, an electric motorbike is a hell of an undertaking. A shop I worked for built the frames and misc componens for custom hawgs. We got into some brackets, fenders and gas tanks also. It took a great deal of engineering, equipment, and skilled labor to produce. Even the 100,000 square foot facility had to source out manufacturing for some components. The owner thought it would generate some decent revenue since the bikes ran on average $30,000 and up. There is some discretion as to whether he made any many even building close to 1,000 frames.
When you say you are ready to market this, wha do you mean?
