In my current job, one of my major roles is to manage online communities, and I would like to carry some ideas over and also offer some of my own so that members can get the most out of this community. If you have any ideas of your own feel free to offer them here for a moderator to see, or if something I mentioned is already developed and I just don’t know how to use the darn site then… oops!
1. Messages: where members can send private messages to one another, or in a group.
2. A response alert: where you can be notified if someone has responded to a post or discussion you created. The alert should also link to the location so there is no need for navigation.
3. I understand it is difficult and not practical to tell everyone the specific of why their idea didn’t make it to the next round. Yet, I think the following is a resonable proposal and the resources are available to implement: If you are a subsrciber and you submit the same idea X times and it doesn’t pass, you get a personal email saying, try the following; we liked this, but didn’t like this.
4. There should be a feature on the site and a process that allows you to opt-in to collaborate with others, either based on georgraphy, integration of skill sets, or similarity of ideas. I realize that would be a lot of work to create that feature, but it would be very valuable and would lead to more teamwork and perhaps higher quality submissions.
Do you agree with these ideas? Do you have any of your own?

Welcome Andrew,
#1… Just this morning I had to put three spam emails in the “junk” folder and flag the new EN member I had friended, Shadow, which is how they had access to my Inbox. Unrestricted private messages? I don’t think so.
#2… Checking for post replies and responses has never been an inconvenience for me, on the contrary, the checking process
generally encourages me to read/respond to other threads that I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
#3… As convenient/helpful as a personal critique and the recommending of improvements/alterations of the submitted ideas
would be, it not only would be logistically impossible, but would negate the “INVENTIVENESS” of the submitter!
#4… Members are at liberty to communicate and/or collaborate with each other already, if they are willing, and infact
do so on a regular basis. Be prepared and willing to enter into a legal non-discloseure agreement, which is good business
regardless who you are collaborating with, before you are made privy to any specific protectable information. EN is not
like Quirky in those regards.
PS: Didn’t mean to re-say anything… when I started writing this there was only one reply

Well said Jim.
Andrew, just click on someone’s avatar and the option is there. Good luck!

Rather than concentrating on the specifics, anything that makes members feel more comfortable about posting on the forums would be great. One thing about EN though, is they almost religiously respect and guard the privacy of its members. So anything that acts contrary to that, will most likely be frowned upon. Making major changes to forum procedures that impose on people’s privacy would be like asking EN to publicize everyone’s inventions, and we surely don’t want that! Change for the sake of change, is never good.

Thanks for responding! I guess I should have familiarized myself better with the site before I started this discussion. I will look for the feature that allows you to send emails, although I looked for it once and couldn’t find it. I’ll check for a help document.

As for #2, see up in the black topic bar, “email me updates” , you will get an email copy of each post.
As for #3……..costs more labor………they do a lot of work for the $20 already. Michael, send me one as well please……LOL
- they connect via email, work out the details/contract etc. together as a group/team. I don’t see EN getting into that legality. They did used to have a skills listing I think, but I think they did not want it to look as endorsements, a legal thing again. Understandable.
Good luck to you Andrew and welcome to EN.

Hi Andrew,
As far as #1 goes, you can friend and send e-mails. #2, I just tend to check in once in a while. #3 sounds like an email that I need to send to myself…haha. #4 is something that is being done by some, but there are others who can answer the logistics of how they go about it.
I’m going to request your friendship…hope you except. :)
