As a homebrewer of beer, I often struggled with the problem of differentiating between my beers when I had several varieties on hand. The common solution was a Sharpie. Then I went with printing custom labels onto small rounds to stick on the bottle caps. Problem solved, unless someone iced down the beer and the ink ran together. Then, I found BottleMark (bottlemark dot com) on Facebook. They just “opened their doors” on July 20th. I used the website to upload the beer labels I design, and let this guy do all the work. I’m still waiting for my first order, but this article in the Houston Chronicle gives me great insight into why I’m still waiting. I see a few things in this situation that we can all learn from. He recognized a market that was not being served. He created a product, a process, and customized equipment to serve that market. The market he serves (Homebrewing/Craft Beer) is one of the few rapidly growing markets in our down economy. I think this guy and his new bride need to move that operation out of their house because they have captured lightening in a bottle and it needs a custom cap! Pardon the word play.
