I give thanks to our fallen soldiers this day because the dead only knows the true cost of freedom.

When I see a man or women in uniform and the opportunity presents itself, I thank them for their service. It shouldn’t matter what day it is, any chance you get is a great opportunity to show appreciation. My Thanks go to all those that serve, sacrifice and wear a uniform. One day over a dozen years ago I was sitting in a fast food restaurant waiting for my order when I noticed an older gentleman doing the same, just sitting and waiting. He was wearing a short sleeve shirt and I could see a tattoo on his forearm. Wrinkled from time I couldn’t make out what it said but I knew what it stood for. With his head raised high he looked at me with a confidence that only could have existed with the knowledge that if he needed to he could snap me like a twig. Out of respect I bowed my head slightly, got out of my seat and began approaching the man. As I was walking over to him he noticed I was looking at his arm so he lifted it up and pulled the skin on the bottom of his forearm so I could have a better view. Still not quite able read the words I first asked – You served? He responded – I did. I held out my hand and said – Thank you for your service. As we shook hands he told me – It has been over twenty years since anyone has thanked me. Not knowing how to respond to that I told the man -twenty years ago I was wearing diapers and didn’t know how speak let alone thank anyone. He asked me – When you did start speaking, what language were your first words in? I exclaimed – English of course. The man put on half a smile and said – You’re welcome. That was the day I fully realized that the freedoms we enjoy today were fought for many years ago. And the freedoms we fight for today may not be seen for many years. |

May we find a little bit of Memorial Day in everyday, as we remember that the sacrifices of our troops are everyday. |

Here here Joseph, thank you for the topic. “The greatest generation of Americans” describes all our military throughout every generation. May God protect them and the hearts of their families with peace. |
