My Invention Hit the Shelves today!
muddejp's Avatar
Greg Spiegel

I just walked in to a Petco today and saw my Invention “Cool Down Doggie” on the shelf! It was really cool to see. They just started shipping this month. It was located on the front display section. I saw it even before I was through the second automatic glass door.
I will upload a picture later but you can check it out on the Cool Down Doggie Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/cooldowndoggie
It has been a great experience and I am so excited to be able to walk in to the store and say I invented that. :)

Ooops. Sorry Roger. Sorry, Greg. I got confused by Michael’s post I though his name was also Roger. I knew it was Greg, (with another name, you know what I mean). I already congratulated him on the launching of the product.

Anywho my point is not where to get it. Yes, I know I can get it at Petco ((still the heat is bearable, so the purchase can wait)). My point is that Petrsmart is a very important retailer. I think at least here in Central NJ Petsmart is larger and more visible. There are more stores. I’ve only seen a Petco store.

Luis, the Cooldowndoggie product is Greg’s not mine. He mentioned above it is available at PetCo. You may want to try there.

Roger, I took our Dog to the vet at a Petsmart in NJ. I looked and asked for your product, and they don’t have it and know nothing about it. I had the opportunity to see how much shelf space is devoted to these leash cases. A lot.

We have had a very cool summer so far, but I am prepared to buy your cooldowndoggie. Petsmart is pretty big. Try to get it there.

Greg, I hope other INventors take a good look at your timeline above. It gives them a realistic overview of how long some projects take. It is not submit it on Monday and it is in stores by Friday. It is a lot of work and a lot of hurry up and wait. Glad to see you had the determination to stick with it. I wish you the best of success.

Do you get the Pet Network? it is a TV network in Canada? Cool Down Doggie will be featured in the “Pet Buzz” portion of the show Pet Fahion TV. I think it will air in September, I’ll let you know when I find out more details.

Thanks for the complements on the pictures as well, I appreciate it!
How’s your invention going and do you have anything in the works??

Tracy, I am glad you like the name! It was tough picking it. Richard’s wife came up with it during one of our brainstorming sessions.
Maybe I will see if Inventor’s Digest is interested in the story, that would be cool.

It is great to see, that every now and then, one of us gets to experience this kind of success. Sales are important, but seeing your idea in a shelf of 100s of stores is something to be proud off. Just that, is worth a lot. Congratulations, Greg. And I admire people like Ryan as well, because they ask the questions, we want to ask, but just feel to silly to… Nice.

Greg,
Thank you for the details. I was wondering who came up with the name. I like “Cool Down Doggie” much better. It just rolls of your tongue.

Maybe you can submit a write-up to Inventors Digest. :)

First Person is a periodic feature written by inventors for inventors. If you are interested in telling your story, email info@inventorsdigest.com. Put “First Person” in the subject line.

I took the above statement directly from Inventors Digest, in case you are interested. ;)

By the way.. My original name for the leash was the Kloud-9 Misting leash. But we found a pet boutique using the Kloud-9 name so we decided to change it to avoid any issues. We changed the name a few weeks before the 2010 pet expo.

At the pet expo I walked around all day with the first design and decided that the weight balance was not right and that we had to design the mister nozzle so that it could be cleaned easily. So we spent the next year redesigning the handle and perfecting a removable mister assembly. Most mister nozzles can get clogged easily since the hole is so small so it was really important for me to make ours different.
March 2011 Global Pet Expo – the first full production units were in.
March 2011 – On the store shelves.

That is the story…

Some of the links don’t seem to work right. The pictures are in my album though.

Next time you see your product try not telling them you invented it and simply ask about it you my get more feedback i do this sometimes and then if i feel it’s right i let the cat out of the bag. Ryan,
I did not take it as a nosy question. These are the questions that all inventors want to know and ask, and the answer is seldom told and since I saw the G8 tag, I assumed that is why you were asking. Congratulations and I look forward to seeing your product in BB&B!

You received an advance on your product, like me, which is an advance of your royalty payment. So the first units that ship to the stores, you most likely will not see any money from because that will go against your advance. Of course that depends how big your advance is, how many units ship to how many stores, and your royalty percentage but this is how it works in a typical scenario. If the products don’t sell well enough to get follow on orders then you may not see any money past the advance. So hypothetically if you received a $2500 advance, your product cost $20 wholesale and you get a 5% royalty, then you will make $1 per unit sold. Now let’s say BB&B has 500 stores and they ship 5 to each store. You wouldn’t get another dollar above your advance until BB&B places a follow on order. So if the product doesn’t sell at the majority of the stores, then there is a possibility that they would not place another order. It all comes down to whether people actually buy the product.
So really it is too early for me to really say anything about the numbers, only time will tell…
Every step is a finish line and a starting line in this process, so celebrate each step and look ahead to the next.

Hi Greg,

Thanks, I appreciate your response. I didn’t mean for it to come off as a “nosy” question if that is how it was perceived. I ask because my pet product is tentatively due to be launched at Bed Bath and Beyond later this year. As you might imagine it is a little difficult getting info about the product at this point. It’s funny to see how you took a picture next to it on the shelf. I have played that scenario out in my head hundreds of time! So if everything stays on track I will get the chance to do so this spring. Congrats again
