flying car

I have a graphic design/ photo manipulation question.

Let’s say I’ve just invented a flying car in concept, and the first thing I want to do is create a photo visual, but I can’t draw and there aren’t any pics of cars with wings. So what I want to do is go out to my garage, take a pic of one of my Ferraris, upload it to my computer then get a pic of a jet, and merge the two pics together.
What programs allow me to do that SIMPLY and EASILY? Free is good, too. Thanks.

Photoshop. But its not so simple. You have to make sure the orientation angles of both subjects (the car and the jet) are the same in both photos. Or they have to be easily made to look the same. Otherwise it will look like the car is pointing in one direction while the wings are flying in a different direction. Even a small difference (say a 5 degree angle difference) can throw off the appearance of the whole image. If you know what you’re doing you can adjust up to about 8 degrees correction, using the perspective adjust feature in Photoshop. With its use of layers, it can be a lot of fun to create composite images.

Have fun!

Thanks, Raf. How about Photoshop Elements? I understand it’s a stripped down version….does it have that capability?

I never tried Photoshop Elements because I’ve always had Photoshop. These are basic features of the program; so I would bet that elements has them.

G.I.M.P.

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

My biggest issue with potoshopping is lighting. You have to watch the lighting angles. If the sun is on the right of your car, you can’t have the shadows on the wings to the right. Lighting is key.

Eddie, do you know if GIMP has any video editing features? I’m looking for a rotoscoping tool that’s free or cheap cheap.

Rafael:

I personally use PhotoShop exclusively…My younger brother uses GIMP and loves it. Try viewing these videos on YouTube, maybe they can answer you question regarding Rotoscoping…

You should do a search for Freeware Rotoscoping tools or something to that effect.

Ed,

I know you know how to use photo shop pretty well, why don’t you take the challenge and make the flying car?

Raf,
I was reading on another post you mentioned your wife thinking you was crazy, I can’t wait until casting calls next year to meet all of you especially you and your wife.

If you notice people on the forum rarely bring up the other half period. I think it’s cool when the other half is represented every now and then. It kinds gives the whole picture of things.

Yeah Chic! There’s a lot of people I would like to meet too. And you and your wife are definitely at the top of the list. But you guys with your motorcycle racing and all might not find us so interesting. To us, ‘biking’ means bicycle riding. ‘Drag racing’ means me racing on a bicycle wearing my wife’s clothes!

well she don’t race, she’s my support team (she likes collecting the money) but since I bought a touring bike I’m not even interested in racing anymore(the bike is for sale).

Now we travel on the big bike that’s cool. I thought the big bikes with the radio and touring bags were for older people. well I guest we’re getting old because we love it.

Chic, Yeah that’s another thing I want to learn. How to ride a motorcycle. I tried it once on a Suzuki 175. Opened it up full throttle – did a wheelie for about 1/8 of a second – then crashed. The guy who owned the bike didn’t like me much after that. Then again he was kind of a jerk at the time, stealin my girl. But he got his … She married him!

Not sure if I understand the German well enough, “the more you make the more you spend?” When my family goes down to Houston on vacation, possibly next summer, we’re lookin you up for sure!

Chic, does your wife speak German? Looked like German to me. The post either said “the more you make the more you spend.” Or “please keep your calculator out of my goat.” I don’t know German.

Mike, I know Houston isn’t your typical vacation destination, but we have friends who moved there from here. They’re about to have a baby, so we really want to go visit them soon afterwards.

About Ike. Sorry to hear about the storm. I hope you come out unscathed.

Isn’t the whole issue with flying cars the wingspan problem? If you put full size wings on it, it becomes a plane made from car parts. There is no way that that can fit on conventional roads or land in a driveway. I think Harrier technology would be better.

Yes Eddie, that would be nice if we all have an airport in our front yard. Anyway, all they figured out is the folding wing. They still have to design the powertrain… and what to do with that big blindspot the folded wing creates! :)

This is another one of those “announcements” that is premature. Fine, tell everybody that you are working on a flying car, but to say it is a few years out is stretching the facts. Like they stated, the problem isn’t with making a car that flies, it is making a plane that drives.
