Would you be willing to give someone a finders fee, if they in return helped you to attain a license for your product idea?

Yes, well deserved, everybody wins, people helping people.
How would people connect? This would be a sales agent on commission. Who would be interested?

I just landed a very lucrative licensing deal with the help of an agent. Wouldn’t have been able to do it with out them!

This is an individual decision. Some licensing agents like let’s say Edison Nation can very well get you many times the sales you could on your own so sharing let’s say 50% is a great deal and will pay off many times.

Also, Edison Nation tries to get you publicity, constantly will push your product on their website, TV show etc. They WORK for you.

On the other hand, a licensing agent can just make one phone call, show up for one meeting with a contract with the manufacturer, and then collect forevermore for no additional work. You might be able to do that yourself but probably not as well if you found a good licensing agent. They may be able to get you a much better deal…but sometimes NOT! You can do it yourself because you will give your invention undivided attention and great passion!

One thing to try though is offer a cap for a licensing agent if you feel all they will do is “wheel and deal” for you for a couple of days. Do they deserve to collect half the royalties for the next 10 years for that? I don’t think so!

Harvey Reese offers a deal I believe which I think is reasonable. His cut gets less and less every year.

Try throwing a cap at a licensing agent like maybe $250,000. They should be thrilled at making that much. If you end up with a blockbuster and make millions, do they deserve millions too? Maybe if they do alot of work but some do next to nothing. Know the difference and offer a cap where you think fit.

SAME with angel investors…you can cap them off too! They think triple the return is a big score. Then cap them at 5 times. No use having a lazy investor pulling on your wallet for the next 20 years either!

REMEMBER…any of these deals….most people think they are pretty much uniform. THEY DON’T HAVE TO BE! Make offers custom to you to make you happy!

I would be willing to provide a finder’s fee if it resulted in a licensing agreement. The finder’s fee should not be significant and definitely should be tied to when you get paid by the company that is licensing the product. I was fortunate to license my patented product to large company but had to build the business first and get a simliar product on the market to show sales. If a person can put you infront of the right person at a company that will license your product it is well worth the price.
