HI everyone, I was wondering if anyone had put in for the BB&B outdoor living product search? If so, where are you in the G’s? Gone to G-3 today, but I am a finalist for the Yahoo Green Search, so if they my question is if they already put my product through and did the IP review, etc, wouldn’t I get Green’s to the final consideration? Anyone know?

Hi Andrea,

Congratulations on your Yahoo G7!

I have a couple G-3s in this LPS.

To answer your question:
Not necessarily. Each LPS has different requirements. So, a G-7 in one, might be a R something in another or vise versa. I do hope you stay green for this one though.

Here is a link a BB&B Outdoor thread that was started earlier. http://www.edisonnation.com/forums/live-product...

Thanks Colonel! I guess it just seems silly to me to put all that effort into IP review again, isn’t IP well IP? Would it have anything to do with the requirements of the company? Just a thought…but good for you! Hope you get picked! Good luck!

Andrea,
Yes, I believe it mostly falls on the requirements of the company and the LPS parameters.

Let’s say you entered a PetSmart LPS; You may have an ideal break-through dog brush, but if grooming is not part of the LPS requirements, you probably will go red. Now, if the same idea is entered into, let’s say, BB&B Pet LPS you could go all the way if grooming is part of the search parameters. I hope that makes sense.

Good luck to you too.

Marla, or anyone from the EN team, can you answer this question above? IP is Intellectual Property Correct? IP means you review if the product is already out there (say patented already) or if it has solid IP perameters or am I way off?

I am wondering if IP review is done over and over again in your IP review department, wouldn’t IP review if done on one product was done, why you would search again for IP or patents when that was already done previously? Wouldn’t you know what products went through IP already? I understand what the Colonel is saying, but IP is IP…I hate to keep bantering, but I would imagine that until it gets to “final consideration” and if you had put your idea or product out and the IP has been done already from a previous search it wouldn’t need to be done again right??

Can you clarify?

Hi Andrea, your question might be good for one of the staff members. Wish I could answer that for you. I just hit the “submit” button and pray for green all the way.
Chris…since I’m just getting started submitting my ideas, I want your opinion on something. I have an artist that draws & sketches my ideas. Do you think the video’s take precedence over sketches? Just wondering. Some of my ideas I know I can make & video but wow, between work and school, it’s tough & time consuming to prepare a decent video.

Courtney, If you can convey the concept so they can understand it without any ambiguity, then a drawing/sketch will be just fine. You just don’t want them to interpret your idea differently then you intended. My feeling is if there are any open ends as to what your idea is and what it does, you’ll get the “unfriendly” red x. Something else to be mindful of is that when EN presents your idea, they will also show the media you submitted to the search sponsor.

Andrea, if you haven’t submitted your question to EN support, I suggest that you do. You will get a quicker response. Here’s the link: http://www.edisonnation.com/support

Courtney,

I just wanted to add that the video doesn’t have to be a major production. My ideas are usually simple enough for me to put together a simple functional prototype. If it isn’t, I don’t do one and just submit drawings. At this point, I haven’t spent more than a few hours on a prototype. Once I have one, I just take my digital camera, video myself using it and take some still shots. I’m not super comfortable presenting on camera, so usually I let the prototype be the star, and you’ll just see my hand turning it on/off, or moving it around, etc. I use Windows Moviemaker, upload the images and video, edit it, and add music. It’s very easy to use. I add titles and captions rather than speaking, I found I had too many “takes” when I tried to describe the features. My videos are super short, usually around a minute. And usually it just takes about an hour to create (except for my last one which wasn’t one of my better efforts:)) Good luck to you in the searches!

I’ve got a pending patent, that’s why I was so late getting it in. I really need some more sketches done but the artist I use is too busy, very good but busy. Just got back from Hobby Lobby to gather some more “stuff” to start my other idea, believe it is due Nov. 23rd, will have to double check the dates. How about you, pending patent?

I know, me too, I also run a business and have 2 small children and an active husband so I am really busy…I have cad drawings that have been done a year ago with Invention Home, I paid about $2500 for the search, drawings and a website. Also, I just say in Inventor magazine (which you get with the GOLD membership) a site called www.quirky.com. You can put your invention out for “discussion” how to make it better and branding. You can also get it to the market (still not sure how that works yet), but it’s a pretty cool site. Check it out…

If you get movement, let me know. HOw many do you have in, BB&B student and BB&B outdoor living?

Hi Yes, I am at G7 for Yahoo Green, I also put in for the BB&B outdoor living at G3. I have spent some money, but I cannot draw at all and also they give you a website to show people, so not a bad investment. You don’t have too spend any money really with EN, but pictures/drawings do go a long way so it seems. If nothing happens on EN, I will try with quirky I think, you can get feedback, etc, and it could go to market I guess if you got enough people interested. I have to do some more research. Anyway, no date set for Yahoo Green for presentations according to Marla, so will sit back and wait..it will be fun to see if we made it on the outdoor search…chat with you later.

I love the feedback and honesty and not to mention the encouragement. Between school & work I just don’t have enough hours in the day to do what I want to. I was telling Ron I have 10-11 more ideas to work on. I did some patent searches last night and did not find anything so far. I’m still having trouble working the “advanced search” in the uspto site. Going to give the IAC a call for help, Paul put some great info on one of the threads about them. Just rambling, so I’d better stop! Will check out quirky also..

hi, i am new to EN with my first submissions in amazon and this one. I have a little experience with quirky. It is a cool model where the community develops a product. Every week they vote on a new product to develop. I put an idea in and it won: lugecubes. once it is developed it goes up for presale before they start production. My idea has 87 of 300 presales needed to start production. It is a fun process, but it is different. It is not for a fully developed idea. once you put an idea in, it is theirs. the community votes on a name, the design, logo, etc. Also, you put your idea up for all to see with no IP protection from quirky. So if you should protect it yourself. Hope this is helpful.

the percent they pay depends upon your “influence” which is gained by having input in the development process. I think it starts at 12 cents for every dollar they bring in. If you vote for a name that gets picked, you get more, if you come up with the name that gets picked, you get more (more than just voting well). It is kind of addictive putting your 2 cents into each product… Quriky brings it to market.

I’m fairly new to EN as well, you’ll love this site, get to meet great people and very helpful ones at that. It would be cool if the EN friends could get together kinda like the Quirky community, no telling what would hit the market. Guess the main thing with Quirky is to patent protect your idea before submitting.
I have a friend who has some awesome ideas but is so afraid to do anything with them as fear of someone stealing her inventions.
My mom is full of trivia questions, one of her favorite is: Do you know where the richest place in the world is? Of course I know the answer now…it is the graveyard! So many pass on with awesome inventions that were too fearful of someone stealing them or just simply did not know where to start.

courtney,
i do love this site already. Interestingly, most of the ideas on quirky do not seem to have patents. I am not sure it is the right road to take if you have a fully developed idea. I thought of making modular molds for a building vodka luges a couple of years ago. i made some sketches and then moved on. I came across quirky and looked through my journal for an idea that had potential but i was not interested in enough to try to make it work myself. I guess others saw the potential and it was chosen. The community took it to the next level and then some. Completely changed the original look of the luge. they did a good job. unfortunately, they are marketing towards binge drinking, which bothers me a bit as a high school teacher, yikes. I don’t talk about it at work :)

I’m new to EN, and a fellow Quirky member told me about the site. On Quirky you have to pick and choose carefully the items you post on there because if Quirky picks it up thats great. If they don’t you have just exposed your idea to thousands of others who may take it.

I read the Walmart Forum and was amazed. Getting your product or idea in front of Walmart decision makers is huge. Happy to be with EN, looking forward to my first submission with PetSmart!

It’s been an exciting learning experience. This time around I’m not quite as addicted to the forums. I’ll do a quick check often, but not post often; just don’t have enough time in the day (or night) to do it. There may be many of us in that category. Good luck!

I can see why you wouldn’t be as addicted now. I am sorry for your R8’s, I am also sitting at G7 for the Yahoo search and it’s killing me, I would just like to know if I am in or out already. The waiting is a killer, but then the R8 would be hard to take after all that waiting. If I get turned down, I will keep trying here and other places, I guess we all have the “dream”! ha

Hi Susan,

I am not sure how long it was but I think it took 3 months to see it as a G7, so that puts Yahoo at almost 5 months now (July 1 to Dec 1st) just sitting there. I didn’t think it would take this long and I emailed Marla and she said she didn’t have the dates to show all the companies the final 8 yet. SO, more waiting. I don’t know what the average it, maybe a good question for Marla!

Marla, if you are checking these posts, what is the average wait to find out if a company has chosen a product? I think if you have an average, it might give more perspective on the waiting periods.

Hello Susan and Andrea,

The following is from the EN Support site:

The time it takes to review your idea depends on the search specifics and the volume of submissions. We typically begin reviewing stages 4 and beyond after the search has closed. The review process after the search closes typically takes 4-6 weeks. After which, we present the finalists to our Live Product Search partner, who has 45 days from the presentation date to make their final selections. Edison Nation uses 45 days a guideline, however, the search partner could take up to 6 months to make final selections.

Thank you for the reminder Colonel, however, our question is global on average. We are at 5 months after closing of the Yahoo search, so that’s why I am asking. I also know that Yahoo and Amazon were different in that they were going to show the finalists to ALL companies, not just 1. So, my guess is that these would take a bit longer to get ALL companies involved…

So, right now if the 6 months applies as the LONGEST wait AFTER a presentation, that puts the Yahoo one at about 1 year if they present in December of 2009…YIKES! Now that would be a very long wait…I am being patient though, I see a lot of action on other searches and presentations dates!

Colonel, have you had G7’s and now long did they take to get presented and accepted/turned down for you??

Andrea,
As you already now, patience is the key, but of course it is easier said than done… It seems that the Yahoo wait could be exceptionally long base on your observation. Do you have other ideas in any other LPSs? I find multiple dashboards help occupy the time.

I have 3 R8s so far. 2 in the WD-40 search, which stayed green for about 50-55 days after the presentation before the dreaded x showed up. Phil Avery is still waiting with his G7 in the WD-40 search. It has been 6 months or close to it for him. My other R8 is in the ASOTV II search. That just turned red this week. This happened immediately after the last ASOTV presentation. Currently I have 4-G7s… WPH, OCedar, BestSweet and Walmart. The Walmart presentation was on 9-30, so I am at almost 60 days or so for that. WPH and BestSweet were just presented last week and OCedar is in two weeks. So, I don’t have a ton of experience in the waiting game, but I am gaining more everyday :)

I have a G7 in Yahoo and a G3 in BB&B Outdoor Search. Thanks for sharing that, I think it’s safe to say about 6 months and longer if presentations dates have not been held. The only stinker on that is that you can’t present to anyone else outside of EN during that time with a G7. It could be critical for people who want to spread their options around I would think.

I am sorry to hear you had R8’s, but the good news is that you got really far and it’s just going to take time to get that perfect fit.
