I’m psyched! What a great opportunity. And Sunline Brands (SweeTarts) used to be a client of mine, back in the 90’s, so I have a few grains of knowledge about candy. Not much, but what a wide-open arena to play in!

Of course, I still have to consider Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe as serious immediate threats…Hell, even Slugworth might submit multiple entries to this here LPS…Damn, I swear, I should have never given that jerkweed Charlie Bucket the Chocolate Factory…What the hell was I thinking?! Leave it to marketers to turn flavor preferences into demographics, are there any candies that don’t appeal to 11-14 year-olds? Wait I know, slap Hannah Montana on the label, even Werthers would get around the Junior High.

Speaking of Hannah Montana, have you ever noticed how many fat people shop at Wal-Mart? Wal-Mart does. Next time you shop there, see if there is a DIABETES handbook at the check-out.

Anyway, aren’t most candy and ice cream flavors interchangable? I would say they should mold the candy in the shape of little ice cream cones. There could be 1, 2 and 3 scoop versions for straight-up and combo flavors. But to appeal to kids who are trying to be more grown up, there would only be “sophisticated” and counter intuitive flavors that little kids would frown on. This also adds the “challenge” element like sour patch kids and Fireballs. Can you handle the “Ginger-Lemon” 2 scoop? How about the "Currant-Blueberry-Mint?

I love people watching, but felt i was whale watching..Its amazing at how, i’d say 90%, that came through thoses doors, young and old, were obese, not fat, but obese. I also watched the baskets going out and what they had in them. I bet each held more garbage than i’ve bought in a lifetime and thats after raising 4 kids.

I looked up their website and it looks like they do a lot of work with Baskin Robbins. They sell ice cream flavored candy. Like Cookies and Cream and Mint Chocolate Chip candies. So, I think they are looking for an ice cream flavored candy idea. At least, that’s what I think they are looking for. It certainly doesn’t sound very clear on their product search description.

I interpreted the info to mean that BestSweet makes and distributes candy nationwide. One of their major clients is the ice cream company who may also be interested in putting our candy ideas into their ice cream. So, our ideas, if chosen, could be made and distributed both as a candy and as an ice cream flavor.

Personally, I think it would be easier for me to come up with new flavors of ice cream than a new type of candy.

I am still confused about the BestSweet challenge. Their website is not running and from other web info it seems that they do not use chocolate in their products. Does anyone know if they want chocolate products? And are they looking for frozen products or room temperature products? Or both?

Hello Mira,

The BestSweet challenge is for candies, not frozen products.

BestSweet works with leading consumer goods companies – including one of the world’s largest chains of ice cream specialty shops – to develop and create candies. Their website is: http://bestsweet.com/

Hi Mira,

I looked at the website a couple of days ago and they make the Baskin Robbins ice cream flavored hard candies. My guess would be that they are looking for ice cream inspired candy flavors, but perhaps something other than hard candy, something fun that captures the attention of the teen market. Or maybe they are looking for new flavors, but I would think that would be easy enough to do themselves.

Well, I thought I understood the search parameters until I started working on an idea, today. Now I’m all confused…

Marla, is the challenge for candies based on ice cream flavors or candies that can be developed into ice cream flavors?

Thanks for clarifying….

Becky :)

Here is my take on the search…

BestSweet manufactures hard candy that are Baskin Robbins ice cream flavors. Only four flavors so far, according to: http://baskinrobbinscandy.com/
They do not make any candy that actually goes into ice cream, nor do they develop the ice cream flavors, Baskin Robbins does that.

I think our task is to look at what ice cream flavors are out there no matter the manufacturer and develop them into a conceptual (hard candy?) product that fits the teenage market. Which might include packaging. branding and maybe a marketing concept if you choose. It may be appropriate to make up a new ice cream flavor that would translate well into a candy.

Just my thoughts and Marla may clarify further.

Walmart
Walgreens
Dollar Tree
Dollar General
Family Dollar
Rite Aid

Also, if you look at the bottom of their website and watch the banner rotation, they have or are going to introduce soft candy… http://www.bestsweet.com/brands-br.html

It IS confusing…The flavour of ice cream is not something special, it is all the flavours are being used in candies already. Vanilla, chocolate, fruit flavours – this is majority of basic ice cream flavours.
To come up with a new ice cream flavour candy, I assume we have to come up with new flavour for ice cream. I am still confused…
Another thing, I am a terrible cook, does that mean I have to pass on this LPS since the only cooking/experimenting I’ll be doing is in my head?

The challenge is for a new hit candy item inspired by ice cream. The idea should fit within a leading ice cream manufacturer’s line of branded candy. Your candy can be in any shape, size, or texture.

Still confused about whether chocolate is candy. To illustrate, my favorite baskin robbins flavor is peanut butter chocolate. Now if I made a candy that fit into a mini-cone, half of it baskin robbins peanut butter and the other half creamy milk chocolate, would that fit into what they’re looking for? I could make an entire line of half n half cone flavors. Am I taking this too literally? Or if I were to take cotton candy and lock it up in a chocolate shell, would that still qualify as they don’t have a cotton candy ice cream flavor do they? Or do you want just hard candies? I’m dumb.

Ralf, just a quick note to tell you that you really shouldn’t give any details about ideas on an open forum. Anyone can be reading and most people don’t post at all. You can edit your posts for about 20 – 30 minutes so you may want to remove your idea there.

The best thing to do with a question like that is to click on the support link at the top right of the screen, and ask those kind of questions privately to the EN team.

Good luck

The colonel is correct. I have 5 submissions already. Think of what kind of candy and flavor related to ice cream would be a good extension of the Baskin Robins line. For example: Rocky Road hard candy that resembles pebbles or banana split lolly pops in the shape of bananas? It’s that sort of thing. These were not my submissions but you get the point.

Hi Ralf, If you are dumb, I’ll be dumber :)
I don’t know for certain, but I think this is just hard or chewy candies.

BestSweet’s current product lines fall under the following:
Lozenges, Cough Drops, Hard Candies, Chewy Candies (I think this is a brand new offering for them), Dietary Supplements, OTC Drug Products

I am approaching this from the market they want to reach, which is tweens (I think that is 8-12 yr olds). I don’t feel they will buy candy in a large bag hanging on a hook in a candy isle. They probably only buy the small packs at the checkout. So keep that in mind too.

Best wishes to you.

Sorry this is long, but here is the list of Baskin Robbin’s current flavors of ice cream for everyone to see. Maybe this will help with your ideas:

Colonel – to say tweens wouldn’t buy candy in a large bag hanging on a hook is an error in assumption. I would think since BR sells alot of it’s candy via bags on a hook – it would most certainly be considered.

Michael, It is only an assumption on my part. I am no expert in the tween market, nor any other market for that matter. However, if the tweens are buying bags of BR candy on a hook, they may not EN’s help to tap that market. That was my take on this search. But you are right, all types of packaging should be considered.

“The Art of Engineering Good Taste” is the motto of Best Sweet. from looking at their site and other articles it seems to me that they are a flavor lab. They don’t exactly manufacture finished products except hard candies and flavors. Is this correct? For example: A new ice cream like Dippin Dots could have been something they wanted, to develop the process, but not to manufacture the product for distribution…?

Basically, to play it safe, everyone needs to have their ideas submitted by one minute before midnight in whatever time zone they are in…
