American Manufacturers Directory

Does anyone know where I can find the most comprehensive directory of American manufacturers?

I know there are several websites that claim to offer this but they all seem to come up way short on actual listings and much of the information they have is outdated and useless.

Is there any legitimate provider of such a directory? and which is the most trusted and respected?

I understand that such information may not come free but I do not mind paying for quality information.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated,

Frank

I’m not sure if they’ll have what you’re looking for, but have you tried www.hoovers.com or www.thomasnet.com?

Frank,
Your local library will have the directory of the manufactures in your state. I beleive it is updated yearly. Your state might list it on a website.

Thanks for the suggestions Margaret and Alvin, I tried some of those websites but the problem is most of them require you to sign up for membership before they will give you any information or contacts for the company.

I will certainly visit my local library and the state of Florida website soon to see if I can locate the manufacturers directory.

It shows how much we tend to forget about our local libraries as valuable resources so much that others charge for what we can find there for free.

I will keep you posted if I find anything.

What about the Harris U.S. Manufacturers Directory?

Does anyone have a copy? how accurate and thourough is it?

I like the idea of having a tangible book but it is also very expensive, has anyone had any experiece with them?

Hi Frank, you might want to call your local invention group
in your area and see if they know how you can get this list.

Hi Frank, I am not sure if there is a comprehensive listing of all us manufacturers. With today’s technology and the internet, it is easier to search the type of manufacturer you are looking for. aside from thomas net, there is manta.com which can help you find manufacturers. I could not conceive of a directory listing all manufacturers though there may be one, you may try dunn and bradstreet as well. It may be easier to find a directory of manufacturers in a particular type of industry such as car parts, machinery, etc.

Frank,
Consider this a vote for Hoovers. The last time I checked, there was a membership fee to get more detailed info as you referenced (we decided it’s worth it for us) but you could also buy a report one at a time based on company. So you get the high level info but if you want to get deep, you pay on a company by company basis, which could be cost effective if you only needed a few.

Carrie,
Have you ever used this service? If so how did it work?

Old topic, but…

Hoovers works. You may be able to access Reference USA through your local library. The best database out there is Dunn & Bradstreet’s Selectory database (selectory.com), but if you can;t access it through a University library or the equivalent, it’s not cheap.

Reference USA & Selectory will allow you to search based on SIC code (6 digit for Reference USA, 8 digit for Selectory), which makes it easier to find manufacturers within a certain, specific category. Selectory allows you to search by a range of SIC codes which can allow you to limit a broader search to manufacturers (as opposed to retailers, wholesalers, etc).
