An Inventor's Question about China

As many of you know I started out exactly where you are – a great idea and no place to learn the ropes of the industry. Since then I’ve been blessed to have had some successes and grow my passion into a full time job developing, manufacturing, and distributing retail products.

I don’t have the time I used to for posting and working with inventors – but when I have a little time I like to answer some of the questions inventors have about developing retail products.

I was asked by the folks at Inventors Mentor Library to write a few words on finding a broker for developing a product in China. It’s a question I get often, and one that many people have on their mind.

If you get a moment feel free to read about this process and the over 350 other inventor topics posted by professionals in the industry. It’s not a forum in the sense that you discuss, but it’s a great place to find a ton of information from the people who invent professionally.

Mark. I read the info on mentors site ,,,,good stuff. I think theres alot of inventors that would like to bring a product into the market on there own but the china/Tiawan distance scares them. It would me to.

Thanks – and I agree. many inventors woudl like to bring thier own products to the market but simply don’t know how. For some people it’s a good thing to do, and for others not so much. It really all depends on what your final goal is.

i have a product currently at g6 i am trying to come up with a backup plan just incase it don’t become a finalist -it is for the motorcycle/recreational vehicle industry—-would you be interested in a partnership if you like the product??

i have a patent , trademarkname, inventory, marketing tools, assembly tools, display ,brochures etc…

i am new to this so any help would be great!!!

i am to the point if this don’t take off i would sell my product and inventory just to get my money back out of it

hey i am an Australian inventor so the China distance is not so great, but it is good to use a broker/agent if you are not used to dealing with China direct – www.chinasourcingdirect.com.au i used to contract an NDA when meeting new factories, they do a bunch of other stuff too.

I had experience with China from my previous jobs in the fashion industry but still got slightly burnt when my quality came back 40% dodgy!! guess it’s my inexperience with the whole manufacturing and QA process.. looks like the cheapest price is just that – and quality is a different price!! Warning to ask ALL seemingly silly questions upfront, as Western customs assume a lot that don’t exist in China..

Hi Jason,

It sounds like you have everything but distribution – a common mistake actually.

Inventors can normally find lots of people to sell them things, Patents, drawings, models, sell sheets, prototypes, the list goes on….but you know, I have never seen an inventor who said they found someone who wanted to give them distribution. The 3D CAD guy didn’t want to, the prototype guy didn’t want to, the sell sheet lady didn’t want to….even the manufacturer who made all those products that now keep you from parking in your garage at the end of the day didn’t want to get you distribution.

Anyone know why that is? They all want to help so much by selling you what you need to get your product done, they all told you how great an idea it was, and how once you get them made everyone is going to want them…..but now the garage is full of product and no one is stepping up to get distribution….maybe no one ever even told you you would need it….why is that?

Dealing with China is all over the board, even with brokers and factories we’ve been working with for years we still have issues on every single project. So taking the time to find the best people is worth the effort.

I don’t know that Taiwan manufacturers are better or worse – like anyplace you have a mix of good and bad. ….sometimes the experiences are good, and sometimes not so much. But knowing what the factory can and can’t do is a big part of the process, and it makes a good honest broker worth their weight in gold.

But assuming you work your way through that maze, you still have to build distribution for your product and that’s the part no one likes to talk about. Without distribution you are spinning your wheels so why even invent?.

Even EN has gotten away from building distribution and moved towards brokering ideas as a business model.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for the insight into your process. Looking at your web site it’s apparent you have a service you sell inventors to license their products. How long have you been doing that and what kind of a success rate do you have?

You also may want to check the copyright issues with posting so many articles by ID and others on your web site….it’s great information, but it may be protected. In fact, here in the US it’s defiantly protected.

would anyone have any idea on companies in china or taiwan who would be interested in a cell phone accessory. I have a new case for smartphones and pda that I would like to license. I have seen nothing like it on the market and a preliminary patent search came up with nothing. I think it could be a big seller.
