You can try doing a web search for Offshore Manufacturing Consultants.

You can go out to bid for free at:
http://www.mfgquote.com/
Check it out, they have a very informative website, there is no cost involved. It’s a good way to find a mfg that specializes in the type of product you are manufacturing. Make sure you talk to some of the mfg’s references before diving in.

If you are producing a big and/or heavy item overseas may not be the way to go costwise as shipping to port then trucking can be a wash!

I was talking to a fellow who has an item made in China this weekend. He told me he pays more to get the product from the ship to his storage site then he does in getting made in china and shipped to the port of Los Angeles. I guess there is a lot to know when it comes to getting your prduct inspected and trucked out of the port, you have to pay people who know how to handle the various phases (or some how learn all the hoops you need to jump through). He also got nailed with a stiff penalty for importing some promotional plastic bags that did not come from a company with some special certification. Something to think about.

Butch, I would be glad to share my manufacturer’s contact info. as they are always looking for new products. We are actually having products made in Taiwan as well.

Also, if you do a search. Search for manufacturers in Honduras, this is a fairly new way to get products mass produced, but they have some government incentives in a lot of companies there, that may cut down on your costs. I haven’t ever had anything produced there, but have met several who have. Good luck….Trent

I also have a manufacturer in China and I have to pay for my own shipping back to the states, I havent used them for a large quanity, just my prototype which was done beautiful. I found a company in NJ that could manufacture my umbrella, but it cost more because the middle man had to get his cut. WOW…. I will look into these other locations that was mention to see about the shipping cost. good luck

Deborah Hi,

if your product idea can be sold between $10 and $20, you will do well on the pitchmen show.

a great place to meet chinese manufacturers are at trade shows…..first of all make sure that there is a sourcing section at the trade show so you don’t spend all the money on travel and find out there is no section of the sort….

at march ’09’s hardware show in vegas, i was qualifying some chinese manufacturers for a client, and i had all day to talk to many and get a feel for them….i did not disclose the client’s info…i just asked the manufacturer lots of questions…this way i could eliminate a sourcing agent/middle man…

it’s not the only way to do this, but i liked this method because you actually meet a live person…and they speak english….

If you are molding a large product using rotational molding, the shipping from China will be expensive. You may want to consider a U.S. manufacturer for large products. I am an product design engineer, so I do not work for any manufacturers.

For some products, especially small products, it is cost effect to manufacture overseas, but not for all products. Get some estimates from potential manufacturers and include the shipping, and import expenses as well. Do not assume it is always best to manufacture overseas without first doing some research.
