Design and manufacture of men’s undergarments – ideas?

I have an idea (patent in process) for a new type of men’s undergarments similar to spandex but with therapeutic benefits. I have no idea how to get this designed and manufactured. Does anyone have experience in this area and can point me in the right direction?

Thank you.

Oh, I really want to write something about having experience with men’s underwear but will stay away from that and mention that I THINK that I recently saw or read about or heard about some exercise clothing or underwear or just clothing which has therapeutic benefits. If you wouldn’t be infringing, can you purchase the ‘fabric’ you are considering? In either case, I would buy some cheap fabric as closely similar to what you want to use and make several prototypes. If you or a family member doesn’t sew, why don’t you find a seamstress who could help? I don’t know where you live but there is probably a dress-maker in your area, an upholsterer (they sew) or just the person at the dry cleaners. Before proceeding, be sure that you have them sign a NDS. Maybe also put your question in the “Idea Den” forum.

Thanks Julie. Very good idea.

Once I have some protypes ready. I would love to get some advice on how to approach manufactures and find out what their minimum order size and price would be. I live in Charlotte, NC and I have heard most textile manufactures in the US are within a few hours from here.

I don’t want to discourage you in any way. BUT, there are a few more steps before you find a manufacturer for quantities. I also don’t know if this is your first invention or not: if it is, I suggest that you look into the book often referenced in the forums – The Inventors Handbook, I think.

I am constantly looking for a new manufacturer and this requires that the company show me their work: I had a sample made in Michigan they didn’t charge me but when I had one made in CA, they wanted $25. But, again, you are a far away from that step.

Good luck..

In my younger years I used to train and run marathons. On one particularly cold day I stuffed some socks down the front of my underwear to add a little insulation. It also added quite a bit of bulge. There were at least 3 different cars with women that honked at me on that run – that was definitely therapeautic. I suggest you stuff the front of your hanes, like the underwear bomber, for maximum benefit.

Brad,

You’re right, we do have several textile manufacturers near Charlotte. When I read your post it made me think of Sara Blakely’s Spanx story… Here is a link that tells how she dit it…

Perhaps you could contact Spanx to see if they would license your product for a men’s line??

Don, I lived in Hollywood many years ago and your idea certainly was practiced there.

Margaret – what a brilliant suggestion!

Edie Tolchin specializes in sourcing textiles, sen items for inventors. Advertisies and contributes to Inventor’s Digest all the time. Though I think she specializes in China sourcing. Website below:

Julie, don’t behave! You are way to classy for that!

Brad, I know how to sew and create. I would gladly help you and sign a NDA, with Roger Brown’s suggestion of. With the male baby boomers facing the physical evolution that is predictable in the larger percentages, I think something like this (if I am thinking the same therapeutic need, would be wonderful. If I am off base on this one, it is still something to think about.

If I have embarrassed myself, oh well, not the first time, and not the last. Gotta love honesty. That’s my story and I am stuck to it!

Good Luck To All!

You guys are great and so much fun. I will start working on my prototype and once that is figured out, seek assistance with manufacturing as suggested.

Penny, I will contact you once I get my thoughts together and can better explain everything.

you should try mfg.com, you can get quotes from manufacturers for reference, both us and overseas manufacturers. You may also want to try industry associations related to garment manufacturing.

Brad, If there is any way you can have your product made in the U.S., that would be wonderful: all you have to do is think of less profit but, in the long run, it is for the good of the country. If you follow any of Ron Komorowski’s comments, and some of mine, you will see what a challenge it is but I can’t tell you how proud I am to have “Made in the USA” on my labels, all literature, the website, etc.

Please give at least some consideration to this difficult decision. (Maybe I’m extra sensitive to this since I am a veteran.)

Ron started a Made in the USA forum a year ago and I just posted something there.
