Importing

Ok folks, need help on where to go. I am designing a product for which I need a low cost source for bamboo, specifically veneers, plywood, and possibly boards. I submitted a request on globasources and got probably a hundres replies from companies in China with different price quotes. Now my task was to design the product, help with building a prototype or to find a prototype manufacturer, these two I have done, but also I am to help find a manufacturer. Now from everyone I have talked to, and the information I have found, the best course would be to hire a local company such as a carpenter(it is a type of furniture/cabinet design) and find sources for materials.
The problem is that all of the quotes are FOB Shanghai, which means we would take care of shipping and freight from shanghai(at least as I understand it because international trade is one area where I have little knowledge) I have some US sources but the prices are somewhat higher than we would like. Should I use a customs broker, or are there other companies who take care of all of this. Basically, should we go this route, I would like to be able to contact someone, tell them what I need, where to ship it, and be done with it. It all seems very confusing to me. Again, I am only trying to help these people find a source. The product needs to be ‘green’ so to speak, so having it made overseas and shipped would be the least environmentally friendly way to go, as it is cheaper to ship the raw materials than the finished cabinets which take more room (not to mention take jobs from us).
Any suggestions on this as I think many of the price quotes are very high.

Hi Shawn, I have seen multiple articles in Inventors Digest about importing that seemed useful. I think they all recommended having a broker. I was in India in 2005 for work and bought a small 200 lb Tandoori oven. I bought it at the factory in New Deli and paid to have it sent by boat to where I live in Northern California. The oven got as far as Los Angeles after multiple months and then I had to pay to have it trucked to Oakland in the bay area. I then had to pay an additional $50 for some kind of import form that I could gotten for free on the web if I knew where to look. Lucky their there was no import duty fee because the price of the oven was under $500, but would have exceed that if you included all of shipping and import cost.

Thanks, wasnt sure where to go as what I am doing is just trying to help these people find manufacturers and figured it may be less costly to get the materials themselves and then have the manufacturing done, also wanted to just get an idea how much materials will cost so I know if they are getting a good deal once a manufacturer is found.
