Intl Manufacturers - Requirements?

Hi,

I want to contact some international manufacturers to get some price quotes to manufacture my product, however, I’m not sure what I should be looking for or requirements that a manufacturer should have.

Does anyone know of a website that has information regarding this topic, or can you share what you look for when dealing with international manufacturers?

For example, should I be looking for certain certificates or safety practices that a manufacturer should have issued by trusted organizations?

I don’t want my product to end up being one of those products that gets “recalled” because of being made out of toxic materials; so I just want to make sure that I ask these manufacturers the right questions.

Thank you,

olimits7

Bulldog has some good info.
You can also google sourcing agents, or sourcing companies. You’ll find a number of articles involving QC or Quality control, through these companies as part of their profile.

India is great for quality and cotton goods, but also expect an increase in cost due to the recent floods they’ve had.
South China seems to be emerging as a leader in electronic manufacturing while other parts of China are great for the lower cost in textiles. The better idea is to not go directly with the manufacturer yourself unless you understand the language and customs.

While going at it yourself may result in as high as 30% loss in defect when choosing the lowest cost per unit.

There are many US agencies willing to help with this language and custom barrier and very well might be the better choice. They have USA offices with multiple relationships with manufacturers in China for procurement.

Many times for orders less than 50,000.00 USD it’s worth staying domestic. Quality is less of an issue, language is also less of an issue. Most of these agencies also have connections if you need overseas sourcing. If made in the USA is good for your product…many small to medium size orders can be accommodated.

For domestic manufacturing you may end up with less profit, but you also have more control and it’s easier for short runs.
also…never rule out Mexico.

Either way…good luck!

Insider Points

If you look at a B2B site like alibaba.com they have ratings for various suppliers (preferred is Gold I think). These suppliers will usually have ISO certification or a EU certification like TUV. They are pretty good at using the Alibaba online chat facility so spend a few minutes first finding out contacts, certfication, etc.

Even though I am not in the US, nor will it be likely I will supply the US market, I do have a manufacturer who is US FDA approved as it is a medical consumable. The US FDA requirements are almost universally recognised as a de facto standard.

If you think India may offer some options, indiamart.com . Although fond of India as a destination, I have found it hard to do business. However a large local population of Indians in the USA so if you know someone, ask for recommendations.

If you are looking for New Zealand or Australian companies, I could make some recommendations but need to know more about your product.
