Manufacturing question

I have an idea that is quite simple. The idea is basically the same as a gift box with two parts top and bottom. The box would be made out of plastic 1/16" thick or so. My question is this how much more difficult is this to produce in a variety of sizes, from a manufacturing perspective? Sizes ranging from 3’ X 4’ to 4" X 4’ The idea would need several different sizes of these “gift boxes”.

Well, darn – one more discrimination against us – as if getting old wasn’t enough.

No the product is not going to be used by seniors, and it does not have to be hard shelled. the plastic can be flexible

If your product will be used by seniors, PLEASE consider the guage you will use: does it have to be hard-shelled? If I MUST buy something which is vacuumed packed, I almost always ask someone at the store’s Customer Service counter to open it for me – doesn’t make them happy but the only other choice is for them to take it back and give me a refund.

Thank you all very much for the replies. Vacuum forming sounds to be a good avenue to explore. The design is about as basic as it gets

Take a look at SnackMates and see if it is similar: if so, maybe Karen could provide some info. (use the search button in the upper right corner of any forum)

I dont know what your design is but vacuum molding sounds like the least expensive Check into it.

if it’s injected molded you will need tooling for each different size. That is your biggest startup cost. Plastic resin is quite cheap but the production costs will vary according to length of time to press each part.. time = money.
