Hello EN!

Wasn’t sure if you all were aware of this contest or not, but it’s def worth looking into. From their website page:
http://www.protolabs.com/Coolidea.aspx

Jump-starting Innovation
Welcome to the Cool Idea! website – Proto Labs’ new program to award innovative thinking and help get great ideas off the ground. The Proto Labs Cool Idea! Award is all about nurturing promising products while they’re still ideas.

Proto Labs is the world’s fastest custom manufacturer of prototype and low-volume parts. Our Firstcut® CNC machining and Protomold® injection molding services provide real parts from a 3D CAD model in as fast as one business day.

In 2011 we will award up to $100,000 in Firstcut CNC machining services and/or Protomold injection molding services to people who have a cool idea for a product and submit 3D CAD models of their parts. One or more awards may be granted each quarter with the aggregate of all awards not to exceed $100,000. Additionally, from time to time we will recognize certain applicants with Honorable Mention recognition, earning them twenty-five percent off of an order.

Winners can use their fully functional Firstcut and Protomold parts for prototyping, design iterations, testing, or even an initial production run—in short, helping move a project from pie-in-the-sky to product-on-the-shelf.

And that’s our goal. What we want to do is recognize innovative thinking at a point where we can help convert those ideas into real-life coolness.

See
4.b.VII. The design must NOT have been previously published, submitted to another contest or won any other award

Does anyone else read this to preclude any prior EN submissions, and published patent applications? The question is in how they define “design”. If in general terms, then submitting an idea to EN, that is incorporated in the design, applies. However, they could mean only the CAD model itself, and contests that include only CAD models.

Someone should check.

The agreement below as written sans the Affidavit/Release reads as just a publicity one. There’s no never-ending license to sell or exclusivity claim in it. Good luck to anyone who has something fitting the criteria and taking a shot at it. There are some cool contests out and about with all sorts of rewards.

Penster-

I don’t think that is the intention of the company or contest: They are trying to draw attention to thier mold and machining services. The first recipient was named in the contest BTW-

Basically it looks like ProtoLabs gets to ‘showoff’ their mold and machining skills with your submitted design. They do not get lock, stock and barrell on your idea, otherwise nobody would bother to submit. I could be wrong, but doubt it.

Their agreement looks like they get it all and you get a few bucks? I may be reading this wrong. You also agree to no recourse of any kind.
Hmm

5. SELECTION; NOTIFICATION; AWARD RECIPIENT OBLIGATIONS.
