Understanding Manufacturing - Website

I was looking for a place to get a rough estimate of manufacturing costs, and ran across this site:
http://www.custompartnet.com/

Seems like a great place to learn of the various methods of manufacture. Site has great graphics, limitations, comparing methods, materials, etc.

Like yourself, Chappy, one of the first things I wonder about at a web site is their monetizaton strategy. I think they may be doing ads + referrals for prototyping/manufacturing. Not certain yet.

Yea, Anant, I find the price field a bit odd. I think EN is looking for where in the market you think the product would sit price-wise. But sometimes an item has variations that cover a range. If you know mfg cost, then it’s 3-5 times that for retail. They may just have it in there as a sanity check on the item vs. the search.

I was looking for thumbnail prices to get a feel for how some design decisions might impact final price on an item. But the site itself is functionally more educational on the realm of material manufacturing than any book or website I’ve run into. Best way I learn is to experiment with hypotheses, so tossing part specs in with different materials and such is fast ramping.

I think it’s always a good idea to get multiple quotes when guestimating. A single source for a quote can be extremely misleading.

Hi Greg,

When we are asked the price in the submission form, its the retail price they talk about, right, and not the manufacturing cost?

The retail price can vary a lot – for instance ASOTV same item costs a lot less than Skymall items. Since we have optins allowed, what price do we enter?

Also, I actually don’t understand why that field is even there – they’ll be able to figure out the price much better than us, so why even ask?

Just a quick analysis (i.e. topics), it should prove to be a great resource. Are they selling Manufacturing process software?

Wow, They really get into explaining the methods…
Likey Likey!!
