You’re a creative bunch, hopefully you can help.
As some of you know, I run the Census Bureau’s Alaska Office. I need to have a qualified applicant pool for filling temparary full time and part time goverment jobs all over the state. Here’s the kicker, I have a limited advertising budget, and I need to have at least 2400 applicants to fill 800 jobs. We do paid training. Did I mention that I need to have these applicants within 2 weeks? We pay $17.50 and hour and up, and it is a great way to help the community, plus it is great on a resume.
How do I get the word out? The local radio stations’ program directors aren’t very good at answering their phones or calling people back. I can arrange TV news interviews and can travel wherever I need, but I don’t want to just fly somewhere to “try” to get some motion. I’ve done small radio station news interviews over the phone with some response. I also have 20 recruiters all ver the state. Any ideas on reaching tens of thousands of people extremely quickly?

Twitter seems to be a way to get the word out quickly…..find some folks in your state and they’ll spread the word to others. Don’t know how effective it is when just opening an account, but you never know, it could go quickly. I tried it out and asked a question and I had complete strangers offering up information in a flash. |

How about contacting the unemployment bureaus…they always know people looking for work. You could also try the colleges and high school guidance counselors….this could be a perfect part time job for students, and remember that each student you reach also has many family and friends that may also be interested. Good Luck |

How about contacting public schools- I’m sure you could do it thru the teachers union and Parent assocations. Teachers, and stay at home mom’s are always looking for extra work. I noticed that American Idol had 100,000 singers audition. Maybe you just need to say it’s a reality tv show job and you’re holding auditions :-) |

Thanks folks! There are some realy great ideas here, so great I am already doing lots of them! There are a few “outside the box” ideas that the government won’t authorize, but a few more I’ll persue! Thanks for the good ideas! Keep them coming. |

Eddie, That is awesome except the phone number is wrong. 866-861-2010 would be awesome. Anyway, I already got approval on two ideas and two more are being handled by Regional. I didn’t get authorization for the moose, but with the right number, I’ll submit it for approval! |

Lets get real now folks! I can’t even figure out how to post an unedited video file of a prototype onto EN! I’ll just call the stations and have them do the story for me. I guess I’ll have to get a haircut. |

Hi Mark, I’m just curious…Is the hourly wage your offering considered what we in California would be a minimum wage? Based on your cost of living in Alaska, and what Toni had suggested that it cost $22. for eggs, $10. for milk, and $15 for 5lbs. of apples-totaling $47. that amount would be one third of your daily wages at $17.50 an hour or $140. Any new employee, based on the $47. purchase for a basic breakfast, has only afforded himself (and family) one meal for that day of wages. What is the average pay in Alaska? Do Alaskans have to make more because they have to pay more? In California I could live on $17.50 an hour, but my basic breakfast would only cost about $7 or $8. saving me about $40. Is your challenge about finding employees or finding employees that can afford the job? I would think something is better than nothing. In California you would have no problem filling that position. |

"What the heck is going on!?!?! in today’s society, why am I having a hard time finding employees!!!!…So what is the problem???? " Hmmmm…Well, Mark, what I think maybe occurring here is the public’s genuine distrust of the Federal Government…And unfortunately Mark, you now represent that which they feel absolute utter disdain for!? Either that, or you just need to get a hair cut…Maybe a freshly pressed Armani dress shirt and a pair of Corfam shoes might do the trick, too!?!

Susan, the area Toni is talking about is far away from the central cities… Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks. $17.50 is good pay in most areas. Yes, in areas where they have nothing, $17.50 doesn’t go as far, but in these areas, there is NOTHING, including jobs. Alaska is huge, and a lot of areas are inaccessable by road or rail. Eddie, the distrust of government is an obsticle for completeing the census, but not so much for hiring. As far as the Armanti suits… I don’t think Armanti makes flannel and Carhart! If you wear a suit up here, you’ll get run out of town.

“As far as the Armani suits… I don’t think Armani makes flannel and Carhart! If you wear a suit up here, you’ll get run out of town.” Au contraire, Mark…Armari launched their Men of Alaska Edition Armani suit line during the 2008 Presidential election in honor of Gov. Palin’s V.P. nomination, do you not recall?! Sweet, huh?

Great resume builder?” “Pay for your gas? Sure!”…So, would that come in the form of a gift card from PetSmart?! |
