Need help finding statistics...

I am having a heck of a time trying to find sales statistics for one of my inventions. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need sales data for Christmas items. I could find 2008 Christmas tree sales stats, but not any other specific Christmas related products. I keep hitting dead ends in my research – like $3,500 price tags for industry data! Does anyone know where to find good reliable info that is free or reasonably priced? Thanks!

Unfortunately Joseph, I’ve spent hours and hours on Google. I’m only getting to sites where they want me to pay for the info or the info is outdated. I think I’m going to try the library.

Margaret you were not very specific regarding the type of product(s), but perhaps the following links will help (if you have not come across the already):

Thanks KJ! A lot of good info on that site. I guess I can be more specific. I’m looking for the number of Christmas tree lights sold in 2008.

OOoo I see you’ve got your holiday thinking cap on… How speculative of you Margaret! Do you anticipate some seasonal LPS"s in the near future Nostradamus?

Margaret, Years ago, before applying for a patent, I was directed to the large downtown library. If you live in a city with a big library, you can ask the librarian for help and she will direct you. If a smaller library is what is available to you, you can do the same there and they will ‘borrow’ the book from the big library but you won’t be able to take it out.

I just did a google search for Phoenix Public Library and there is a ‘contact us’ page with places to click for research questions. I imagine that you could put in ANY area for the library. Good luck…

Thank Julie! I’ll check it out.

William,

Did I tell you my middle name is Mabus?? ;) Last year EN had a Halloween and a Christmas search (Christmas Tree Shops – although it wasn’t really just for Christmas ideas). Too bad they didn’t have another Halloween search because I have a idea in progress that I didn’t get done in time for the last search. I think it’s probably too late for a Christmas search for this season, but you never know. I have been working on the Christmas one for quite a while. It’s my G7 in ASOTV. I thought maybe some stats might nudge them in the right direction :).

Hi Margaret,

One day full access to report for $48.95:

May be worth the cost?

To quote myself from a past thread,

….

Google is actually a good resource to find market data, if you are willing to learn the advanced search operators and such and figure out how to use them to your advantage.

Factiva is an easy to use site to find certain market/survey data and other stuff. It is not cheap to use on a regular basis. Sometimes they offer free trials.

Biznat – www.biznat.com – appears to be a respectable resource considering it is free. I have only used it briefly to test it out.

http://tr.im/quickstatistics will take you to a Google Custom Search Engine put together by Criterion Dynamics. The search engine does not work perfectly but does work. It provides an easy way to use Google to search the web for statistics and it does make it a lot easier to search the Census Bureau’s data. http://tr.im/surveys may also be helpful.

If you are looking to find sales of a specific product (by a specific company) annual reports are useful. If you are looking for data re: corporate revenue, you can get a free 7 day trial to D&B’s Selectory database (@ www.selectory.com). Reference USA is also a respectable business database and may be accessible through your local library’s website. Hoovers.com should also work.

In this case, try http://tr.im/christmastrees

You know,

“I guess I can be more specific. I’m looking for the number of Christmas tree lights sold in 2008”

I missed the word lights, and forgot the initial post. That was my bad…

So ,I guess I gave you what had already found. Oh well. Good luck…

Criterion,

That’s ok, I appreciate the help. I’m especially glad you brought back your original post with the links. Those are really helpful.
