Can One Be Too Consumed With Product Ideas??
txyellarose's Avatar

Is it normal to feel consumed by your ideas?? It is my first thought in the mornings…And my last thought before I close my eyes…

How do you find that happy medium where you can just let it go?? Even if for only a few minutes…I sit with my laptop reading…Checking the dashboard…Checking Email…Researching Companies nearly every second of every day!!

I am scared someone will post something that I need to know…And what if I miss it?? What is if something comes up that I miss in the shuffle of things??

Without experience in this field, the only thing I know is to read, read, and read to learn what I need to know to push forward…

But even if just for a few…I would love to let it go!! Anyone else feel the anxieties like this?? I just want to make sure I am not over doing it?? Maybe I could be more productive if I knew how to just “relax” and let it go for a few!!

I am consumed with getting this product to market…Seeing it in stores somewhere…Is this normal??

I have seen many inventors get this way, and it’s ultimately the downfall of the process. You have to detach the emotion from what you are doing so you can see the process. If you were really, really excited about playing a game of Chess, you would not be able to concentrate on the moves and think about the strategy – simply because excitement is a much more powerful emotion than forethought and logic…..it will always dominate the mental recourses.

The most successful inventors and product developers are those who are proud, but humble about their inventions, and can take the emotion out of the process.

Let’s think about it for a moment – in the end, it’s just stuff that we are trading for ugly green paper with dead guys on it.

Now how serious can we really take this?

True enough Mark…lol…“Trading for ugly green paper with dead guys on it”

I am not sure if it is the thought of the green paper…Or scared that I may miss something that is imperative to the process!!

I agree on letting the excitement cloud my concentration…I have the pride, and the confidence to get it done!!

I lack the experience…So I figure if I read, and learn something new every minute I can…I will have more of a chance of a successful Chess Game…

I am really trying to keep emotions out of it…Stay focused on the end result…And play the game strategically…It does however get hard at times!!

I take all of your advice like I have said before…I write it, read it, and re read it…Put it into my files and reference it often!!

Thanks again for the advice…When I get this way…It’s time to hit the treadmill…lol…Keeps the nerves down!!

Nothin’ wrong with excitement,Lesia.Enjoy it.

As far as missing stuff, the key stuff is posted and re-posted in different forms all the time.
It makes sense. The information makes sense and adds up to a tangible body of growing knowledge which helps identify what bits are missing or need developing.
Because it makes sense, and is actionable,it is interesting to learn and interact with others, who have different angles, and maybe more information or vice versa.
It really helps when dealing with real world agencies as well.
It’s not about dead-lines,it’s about getting there.
The best thing about the information, apart that it works,is that it helps you avoid horrible time&resource consuming detours. These are the total pits.

Enjoy!

Funny you ask the question Lesia. I had asked myself the same question over and over. The answer for me was yes :(. I realized I was spending too much time soaking in information when my husband had to ask if he had any clean underwear to wear for work. Oops – bad wife…bad wife
Trying to find the balance is hard … if your house is clean, everyones fed & there are clean clothes … absorb away. Share the info with me since I’ve got some (well tons) laundry to do and don’t have time to research as much as I’d like to ;-)

That would be true for me…But I am more banking on outside sources than EN on this one!! I think this one may be a little bigger, and more expensive to produce than other items…When I first started out EN was the only thing I knew to wait on…But now I have placed calls to other large companies as well…So between the two I have a double wammie!!

Waiting is the toughest part for me!! I am almost positive that I will go red long before others…Not because it is not a good product…But more because it may not be exactly what they are looking for!!

I am excited however, to see how far it goes on here!! That thermometer is a killer…lol!!

I have some OCD tendencies…So between me and hubby the house stays in great shape…lol…Plus I have a lap top…It goes in every room I go into!! Who knew I could fold, read, clean toilets, and read…lol…I have to work on the showering and reading though!!

Not really…I do have it bad…But I have not let it affect the family yet!! Believe me they would say!! My husband is great about this…he helps where ever he can…Pushes me to get it done…He proofs everything I do…He is my QA dept.

That is not the signs of a bad wife…That is a sign he needs to learn to use the washer….LOL….LOL…Very much joking…lol

Have a great day everyone!! Your all great!!

hahahahah – We have some OCD tendencies here too. Considering it’s the first time in 10 years he had to ask that question, I must not be doing so bad. We don’t let the hubs do laundry anymore. When I was pregnant and on bedrest with my youngest he said he’d do the laundry. When I tried to teach him about seperating clothes his reply was, “I’m not doing that …it’s ridiculous…there is no reason the pants and the shirts can’t go in together” hahahahaha. He had no idea seperating meant by color, and that towels go alone. He’s never touched the washing machine and were gonna keep it that way. Besides he’s at work 7 days a week – no need to give him chores in the home.

Lesia,

Mark is right. It comes down to the same thing I say about how you approach your invention. You have to look at it as a consumer not the Inventor. The same applies to your obession to see it on the market. Some Inventors are so obessed that they can’t believe any company would turn them down or that their baby might not be marketable. The Inventor that can’t detach themselves from the emotional tie to the invention is destined to spend money recklessly, waste massive amounts of time and have a higher risk of failure.

It’s different for me “I think”!! If I were to find out that the product was not marketable…I really think I could let it go…Not that I want to let it go…But I think I could…

I told my husband that I hope for the best…But am always prepared for the worst!! I do not want to waste years on something that cannot mature…But am willing to stick it out for awhile and see!!

The thing I think I am most confused over is the amount of time I am reading, and researching…But even if the product never succeeds…I have truly learned a lot over the last few weeks!!

I think my set of nerves is waiting for the phone call from the CEO I have been speaking to…He did have his seceratary touch basis with me…And I actually feel good about that…This man has 27 years in the business, and his feedback will be very important on my decision as to where to go next…With that many years in this business, I will take his feedback to heart!! It does not matter who you are…If you have that many years into something…You KNOW your stuff…

I did however get turned down by another last week…And he offered to take a look at the product anyway…After signing an NDA….He said he would tell me if he felt it would make it…But they were not looking for anything new at this point…I did not send it because I was not comfortable with it!!

Anyway, As Always….THANK YOU guys for all the super advice you are willing to give!!

Okay, let me break it down for you…Vulcans, (Mr. Spock) as a matter of custom and policy, suppress or think past all emotional influence by living lives of rigid emotional self-control through meditative techniques and training of mental discipline. Vulcans are not depicted as having no emotions; although they themselves make this claim, Vulcans are a very emotional people. They developed techniques to suppress their emotions precisely because of the damage they can cause if unchecked…Oh, like you guys didn’t already know that!?

So, choosing Mr. Spock is the only “logical” choice regarding Mark’s emotional detachment comment …Wouldn’t you agree?

Ok, ok, Mark…We heard you the first 3 posts!!! Who would you suggest Roger be?

Ideas period.

If “creativity” were a drug, oh wait….

Take it from me, being broke and homeless because of “Persistant Eidetic Intrusion” only spawns more inventions, not for convenience but for survival.

I recommend watching the very first episode of CONNECTIONS, think long and hard about how far from self-reliant you are, how fragile your security and means are, go back to the plow…and ask how many modern conveniences would be handy – wouldn’t be anything you find here…

So yes, all product ideas are all-consuming in that they are not needed and any effort to bring them to market is a futile insult to future generations who will ask, “Why the F were they worried about pet toys and lubricant nozzles in the middle of Tribulation???”

Being a long time Trekkie I have to say The Trouble with Tribbles is my favorite episode of the classic series. I wrote a proposal for a novel based on the Tribbles, but haven’t gotten any bites on it. I saw the first showing of the new Star Trek movie and thought it they did a fantastic job. It was also fun to see the people in the Spock ears, and various Star Trek uniforms. Just to set the record straight I do not own a phaser, but would love to have a working model. It would be great to clear traffic. LOL

Detaching is a part of the learning process. I am learning that too.
I’m learning one step at a time, and even though “I love my ideas” I want to be able to look at them objectively. I’ll figure in the emotion later.
I still get excited when I complete a step, then I calm myself down and focus on the next step ahead of me.
It seems to be working for me. I try not to jump ahead of myself, this allows me to really focus on the step I’m working on.
Funny thing is the excitement is always in my mind I just have to learn to curb it. LOL!!!
I would rather learn this process, and master each step, than to have someone else do it for me. What fun would that be? Where is the excitement in that?

Lesia, it is totally OK to think about your ideas, I do it all of the time, but I think when you have to make decisions on the product/idea, that is when you have to take the emotion out of the equation!

I’ve made about 3 attempts to answer this question, but just couldn’t seem to find the right words, but here goes…

To answer the main question: yes, I have often found myself too consumed by ideas. There was a few days last fall when I swear that overnight the creativity switch in my brain turned on. I had sooooo many new ideas bouncing in my brain that I literally could not focus on anything. The thing that finally helped me to focus was to grab a 3 section notebook and start righting it all down. In the first seciton, I just wrote a quick name for each so I could refer to the complete idea list quickly. The second section had details about each idea. This section tended to bounce from idea to idea, but at least I got it all written down. Once I had them written down and didn’t have to worry about forgetting them, I had time to really think about each one and do a little preliminary research, decide on which ones were a high priority and which ones could wait. Some were already done, some weren’t such good ideas after thinking about them for a few days, and some are potentially gold (so far). I’m really lucky in that I have a great support network of family and a few close friends that I can bounce these ideas off of. I’ve challenged them with each idea to find the flaws, the problems, the potential or lack of. I’ve found this to be a great way from getting too emotionally invested in the idea early on because I start out by looking for the drawbacks or weaknesses of the idea; if the idea can outlast the fault-finding, then I decide whether to pursue it, shelve it or scrap it. I’m also lucky that they have always been brutally honest about the ideas, and they have often added features I hadn’t thought of, thereby improving on the idea. If I decide to go ahead with the idea, I then begin a proper inventor journal for the idea.

I don’t know if this really answers your original question Lesia, but it’s what helps me to manage the brain-bouncing ideas.
