Please help name this new inventor's show

Help! As you may know I am starting the first annual inventor’s show in NJ right next to Newark airport and 30 miles from NYC. It will be May 22, only one day this year but expected to make a BIG splash. Next year 2-3 days.

The event will be held in Kean College and supported by them along with the NJ SBA and SBDC. Other promoters will be NJ, Manhattan and Philly inventor groups, Edison Nation, Inventors Digest, Thomas Edison Foundation and Museum.

We fully expect this show to be a giant extravaganza catering to inventors, innovators and businesses that serve inventors but those businesses will be specific to our field that HELP inventors such as prototypers, licensing agents, IP pros, NJ angels (angel investor group), local plastic manufacturers that will be there also to teach the mold process or plastics manufacturing….just resources we all need…and there will be NO descrimination. This will be a playing field for all.

MOST important is for us all to meet and have an inventor’s party. I started this idea because of how VERY VERY special the inventor’s community supported me when i was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer this summer. I had an idea that this was a way to celebrate all us inventors together, a way I can give to the community as we will ALL learn here and network…and also area colleges will be involved who many around here have helped me with my inventions.

This will be my time to give back…starting this show but I am just one of a bunch to set up and promote and I will NOT be making the rules, decisions of how the show goes…the inventor community will suggest as well as the colleges because the college alumni will participate in an invention contest hopefully this year and display the winners at the show.

I need help naming this show! Don’t forget the name must be relevant so people can find every year. My head is foggy from too much chemo so please give me ideas for a name and suggestions for content for the show.

I was thinking maybe “The Inventor’s Ball”? (Innovators welcome too) It will be a ball…I want it FUN…meet and greet…no scams or overshadowed by businesses selling unrelated stuff like just a printing shop or hot sauces as you see at shows. Businesses will have to be approved, just have to be inventor/innovator related.

DIRT CHEAP booths. $100 for inventors and ONLY $200 for businesses as the college and head of SBDC wants this AFFORDABLE and is trying to help in this economy.

Media is already asking for info. I know people…and they know people…and this show is next to Manhattan. Expect special speakers, media…I will try to get the Discovery Channel there…and Edison Nation film crew ofcoarse. Michael Cable that runs the crew…EN co-founder is a WONDERFUL guy and GIANT fan of inventors.

We will build the website as quick as possible. we will ask for checks only I think mailed to the head of the SBDC stationed in Kean College to Mira Kostak who is VERY enthusiastic and excited about this project. She has helped me with inventions years ago and her and the college always had a program to help inventors.

This show was thought of because INPEX and Yankee Invention Expo canceled this year and the spot of the show is where Edison, Einstein, Lemelson and Nikola Tesla lived and worked. Very rich inventor innovator history around here and a show is long overdue.

The show is a short train ride door to door from Newark airport or short cab ride. Union is adjacent to Newark.

Suggestions and ideas PLEASE! Thanks! I come up with “The Inventors Ball” I don’t think we want to say NJ or NE Inventors show because it is for everywhere. PM me if you want a call for when you can register. I forgot who says they are going. I’ll start a list.

Ron, this is a great opportunity you are offering here. I know you are a big advocate for made in the USA, so maybe something like “The American Innovation (or Innovators) …” Symposium or Conference or Expo?

Carol, domestic manufacturing is too controversial and a matter of opinion…really. I may be patriotic but others may favor some of the poorer countries to get a chance…just many opinions…and also if an American company manufactures overseas but the profits come into this country…well that is not too bad either…and the reality is, we cannot make everything here…I just ask that inventors consider some manufacturing here…maybe even partial.

It may not be possible to manufacture certain things here, the U.S. is not best at everything, but what bothered me, I noticed in the past 10 years inventors and the like did not even bother to see if they could make here…and that is how we destroyed our economy…I believe. Not trying to keep American business here if we can.

Maybe I don’t make as much doing things my stubborn way….but I just can’t explain how proud I am every time we export one of my invention to another country…and how they praise my American invention…or are excited to receive….very special to me….but to force my opinions on this inventor show…that is not my sole decisions anyway…can’t do that.

We will promote a booth or something to U.S. manufacturing and will seek a speaker from the White House on the subject. Got a connection in there…see if he’ll come. He speaks at shows.

Good point. Of course, I didn’t mention domestic manufacturing….just thought it might be nice to celebrate American ingenuity and creativity, regardless of where the items are actually manufactured.

I’ll keep thinking. More likely than not, an idea will hit me just as I’m trying to go to sleep!

Yes Carol…the show is to support American innovation, inventing as we need it more than ever. It will be fun but also a very serious purpose too. We are losing out scientists, engineers and inventors as more people head toward business and marketing.

NJ has stated that problem many times after they used to enjoy the claim of the highest concentration of scientists and engineers in the U.S. which probably means the world.

This show will be an attempt to help with that realization.

Ron, Thanks again for your great initiative. I love NJ & NY. This is just a small contribution. I told you I would support you any way I can.

I think you want a ONEWORD name that describes the event and operation, as opposed to a long tittle. I did some quick research, and I believe the proposed names may be used. “Inventfair.com” is just a phony site to try to sell the domain. There are ways around that.

You need a media kit. That lady at Kean College (It is Kean University now, BTW) may help you with that. Best of luck, and THANKS. I am very excited about this. It was about time.

Luis, we will keep it simple this year. I am building a website with the President of NJ Inventors Group…..many people will have say on content and there will be directions, date, where to mail a check, attendees and speakers listed. Keep it simple until we see how this evolves…what everyone thinks it should be….make everyone happy.

My idea us to try to expose inventors to as much media and other opportunities as possible. I know people in Popular Mechanics magazine…I’ll ask them to come by…all kinds of stuff. I’ll ask NY and NJ news stations to come…you know me…BIG mouth.

All these suggestions help spur collective thought and WILL HELP. That is why focus groups are so important to inventors.

How about “Invention America…”

This way we could possibly have multiple shows in different cities each year…..sound big and meaningful and gives inventors a bigger purpose maybe…we invent to help America.

There is or was a big radio show called Air America but that did not influence my idea for this name.

We will also celebrate American inventor history to help inspire today’s inventors. I think we will ask all to print out a poster and hang on a designated wall of favorite inventors or inventions. Very easy, just send a copy to Staples and make a poster.

Good idea? So people can go up to the wall and be interested?

Any other ideas for the show? The show belongs to all inventors and promoters of inventions…that is why I think maybe Invention America may be a good name…add show, expo 2010…whatever….and I will ask the President to even speak…maybe, know someone in there that was trying to get me a meeting with the President. The name I suggest does sound important I think, one to attract media and some other established people that could help.

What else? What do we need at the show. C’mon…ideas….we will get the students involved. I would like Edison Nation and maybe a couple others to speak to the students only the day before…we’ll see though….next year will be two years…but this year looks like a very tough economy once again…that is why the booths will be VERY cheap. The NJ SBA, SBDC’s idea…cheap…to help inventors. Thank Mira Kostak for that.

Yeah I prefer InventFest (IF) over inventfair sort of like the Burning Man Festival in the nevada desert. It couldn’t be called Inventor Man, for example, because it’s not PC. Wait, or AIM-CON for Amerinvention Convention (yeah I know the M and the I are swapped but we’re inventors, we don’t have to follow the rules.)

Ralf,

Strictly from a marketing point of view, I would not use initials or abreviations that may hide the purpose of the event. The word ‘invent’ and any other word indicating it is a ‘show’ (show, expo, fair, etc) should be readily ascertained, as in:

http://s3.amazonaws.com/edisonnation/albums/444...

As for ‘fest’ v. ‘fair’ let’s go to the dictionary (dictionary.com):

fest
/fɛst/ an assembly of people engaged in a common activity (often used in combination): filmfest; gabfest; love-fest; poetry fest.
-———————————————
fair.
3. an exposition in which different exhibitors participate, sometimes with the purpose of buying or selling: a science fair.

I think ‘fair’ might be stronger. We don’t want to appeal only to inventors, but we actually need to attract an audience: INDUSTRY.

Also, let’s not forget about the ‘world fair(s)’ that have imparted a global and massive connotation to the word ‘fair’

Nice Susan! I talked to my NJ inventor’s group last night. They are established many many years. We have made some exciting contacts and have some commitments from interesting groups like angel investors that will also speak on how to pitch an idea.

My inventor group knows many in the area that pertains to inventors. Also talked to the President of UIA and President of Manhattan group. They will be there and also invite the people they know that are good for inventors to know.

We all can be equally proud of what we do and we all try our best making us all just part of a big team…Innovation America…or something like that.

We could have all chose the easy way…open a pizza store or something instead of pioneering something new.

Holly…Edison Nation will be there. Louis said that they would have atleast someone there. I don’t know about a casting call but I know I will bring attention to the helpfulness of Edison Nation as well as attention to other resources that will help innovation and inventors by opinion of inventors that will not profit from their recommendations.

There will be a number of promoters planned year after year and they are NJ SBA, Kean University (hopefully other area colleges too), Edison Nation, Inventors Digest, NJ Inventors group and hopefully the Thomas Edison Foundation/museum as they will hopefully bring a “portable” museum. The UIA wants to really help too their President told me. Then there will be me. The idea here for me is if I don’t go on this show will with these people and my name will stay somewhere small as one of the founders of the show. My daughter will be reminded I did some good around here. It was my idea…or should I say I’m the one getting up to bring a mass of the inventor community together.

This country is in trouble! Worse than last year. Inventors and innovators need to come together once again with a good mix of patriotism and make big things happen like the historic innovators/inventors in the past. Hopefully this show will be set an example for all to see…..especially media…I’ll take care of that.

Thanks…thanks…some names to think of. I think we have to have a name that keeps inventor as a basis, but allow and attract innovators AND be a national sounding event which it will be….and one last thing…encourage inventing, innovation as a whole for the U.S.

I had two names that I thought did that: I had (the) Inventors Ball 2010 “Celebrating yesterday and tomorrows innovations” (as an underlining promotion/marketing line) or Invention America Expo.

Both sound intriguing to visit (to me) rather than the Northeast Inventors show or something. A name too general will not work…we must still remain what we are…inventors…but not exclude great innovations

Ron, the name is very important. Eventually, inventors will find out about the show. However, we all have read, heard or seen first hand about the very low attendance by industry and media at most if not all inventor shows lately.

Attracting tech scouts and other industry members is our ultimate goal. They are the audience needed to show our ideas to. If they don’t come, the show is just a nice gathering of peers. Just like preaching to the choir.

I would make it a priority to attract our target audience. The name should aggresively and succinctly say it all (mainly to our target audience: INDUSTRY). Media is also extremely important.

So, I want to remind you about my suggestions:

http://s3.amazonaws.com/edisonnation/albums/444...

OTHER POSSIBLE AGGRESIVE NAMES:

Invention MARKET (Innnovation Market)
InventMART
Invention Plaza (Innovation Plaza)
Invention Mall (Innovation Mall)
Inventrade

And if i may contradict myself for a second:

AIM /American Innovation Market

The show is to pitch inventions, to sell inventions, to succeed.

Good Luck, and GW I’ll be there, regardless of the name. Please, get me a corner booth :-)

Thank you Luis for all you have been supporting on this for a long time now. You take a deep analysis and then talk. That is the trick in this field I believe. Most come up very short in research across the board and that is why they fail…NOT because their idea is bad. I have noticed you do things in the correct depth in all you do to give yourself even a chance to pull off a win…VERY good…and to be respected.

For the show, what I want, the theme…is to network, truly enjoy meeting people as opposed to having to shine the best in an intense business gathering, to get us all some opportunity with media, companies, whatever we can do.

I don’t want this to be as much of a business meeting and sell or buy which inventor shows can be. Just more of a relaxed, less pressure where we all network…not a bunch of companies saying gimme your invention…you don’t know what your doing…let us take over and you pay us or let’s make a licensing deal…no….none of that…or scaled back.

What I want is us all to have the type of exposure that I had to become successful. The networking and media exposure and how to get that chance…just like I did. I will try my best to get media to this show…and people that can help.

That is one major reason why I respect and like Edison Nation. They don’t get in your face and push ANYTHING…or sell you stuff…insisting and insisting. They professionally offer what they have…you want it…fine…if not they will not push you and never are in your face every time you turn around…they pressure NOBODY.

That is what I want at this show and more towards a social…networking theme with much inventor meet inventor and share resources…rather than a business meet up with everyone trying to fatten their wallets. You do that on your own another day. I would like this show to celebrate our field, congratulate each other and support…and to network…without high pressure invention services too. Display who you are and what you do…but overall this will be a joyful meet and greet, network…and hopefully media will talk about ALL of us.

Thanks for the list Mark. You should really try to make this show. You have so much to offer. I really think one of those things you need to teach us is your product displays…WHICH CAN MEAN EVERYTHING…when bringing a product to market. I spent DAYS studying just about that!

Also, your vehicle wraps…I need to do that one of these days…when I get another vehicle.

Hopefully you can come, and promote what you want. It is an inventor’s show and a “fair field” for all to introduce who what where without stepping on anyone’s toes…it will be all fun! Big fun get together…we all get to meet many.
