I have a word i want to use like a catch phrases, mine just happens to be one word. I know some have been protected, like the guy who announces boxing matches, the Fonz’s Eya, Sh!# Happens, the smiley face, etc. Does anyone know what it cost, do i just need a copyright and are those costly?

Thanks, i did a search and found many people who have copyrighted this word. All were classified dead, not the people but their copyright, so i’m assuming that if it said dead that no one holds a right on it. There was one, but it was for a product and had the word written in a certain way.
One thing i didnt find was the cost of it. I dont know if i would ever use this word, but if its cheap enough to copyright, i may just do it for the fun of it.

Typically single words are protected by a trademark. Copyrights are for expressions of whole ideas and patents are for new methods and new widgets.

Federal registion of trademarks are not that cheap and probably not worth the money.

Also, if you want to get a trademark on a word or phrase you have to be using it in commerce, or intend to use it in the near future. If that’s not the case, you will waste your money with a trademark filing.
