Recycling Existing Technology

There is currently a product out there that is being used for children, however there is a different application for it in the pet market that could mean millions in revenue. How would one go about bringing a product like this to market? This means borrowing an existing technology to be used for a different target customer and for a different application. Would something like this be viable for Edison Nation Product Searches?

cynthia,

i’m no expert, so here’s my opinion for what it’s worth. There are many products that couldn’t be patented becuase they weren’t a new technology, best example i can think of is the hoola hoop. Perhaps you could come up with a new name and get it copyright protected. Give it a new name and draw a diagram how it would be used and then submit. Seeing something a new way is just as creative as inventing something. There was the semitruck that got stuck under an overpass becuase it was a couple inches too tall. After a couple hours of trying to figure out how to get the truck out, a kid came up to someone and asked why they didn’t just let the air out of the tires. hope this helps, kamala

correction: that should have been “trademark” not “copyright” to protect the name.

Cynthia,

You can often get patents for a new use of an existing technology or product. This may be what you are trying to do. Kamala also has a good idea of putting your time and resources into branding and building up your product that way through trademark protection.
