since inventing may take years and tons of money in order to get a new product to market,if someone paid you a large sum of money for 50% of your patent, also this person is willing to license your invention, would you sell part of your patent for a license deal?

In a heartbeat. That’s what I’ve been trying to do. Of course, this largely depends on whether or not you consider yourself a one-hit-wonder.

I’m not sure selling ‘part of the patent’ works: would the company who will own 50% of it allow you to use your 50%? Would you be able to manufacture and sell? If you can, would you have to agree on a firm price so you would not be selling for less?

Julie,

From what I understand it’s all up to negotiation. You can sell the unlimited rights to use your patent (but still keep the right to build yourself or license to others), sell limited rights within a geographic area, sell exclusive rights in a particular industry, sell exclusive rights to the entire patent, etc.

Thank you Mark – never thought of it in that way.
