Curious if anyone has tried/bought/seen the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic ($1300 3d pritner kit)?

Looks like a really cool way to go if you’ve got cad files. I’ve been using a Craft Robo 2d plotter cutter for mocking up paper structures, scoring thin plastics, and other 2d things.

These devices are cool. They are good for prototyping. The surface finish is not as good as you would like.
Caution: They are NOT very easy to build but if you are a tinkerer you can do it. You need to know CAD to generate your parts. And you need to know design to make useful prototypes. Today they are like the early computers (Altair) pre Apple/IBM.
In 10 years, however, they will be common place in everyone’s home.
Cheers,

I received a Google alert this morning that PrototypeToday wrote a story about us and National Inventors Month. I spent some time watching the various “homemade” 3D printers and there was some really cool stuff there. I’ve always been fascinated by our Dimension 3D printer here at the office. It’s amazing to see that for $1,300 you can buy a comparable product to one that cost $80,000 less than a decade ago.
