Time To Pitch That Fastball (Phone / Email)? ;-)

Hi,

Ok, I feel I’m ready to start contacting companies to see if they would be interested in “licensing” my product.

I’ve got my sell sheet ready, PPA filed, design files, overseas quotes on manufacturing costs, market research, retail sell price, expected profit margins, etc…

So my question is what methods would be best to contact these companies to see if they want to “license” my product (email, phone, etc)?

Also, what information should be sent initially if I email companies? Just the sell sheet with a brief statment listing the benefits of my product to them?

Thank you,

Bernardo

Another reason not to send things before you talk to someone is to make sure what their policy is for submission. Most companies want you to sign a NDA before submitting anything. Another issue is most companies servers have a limit of the size of attachments you can send.
If your email is to large they will bounce it back or just put it in the junk folder for deletion.

Bernardo, Don’t waste your money with mailing sell sheets, emails etc. until you have called and talked to a human being. Do you ever open a email if you have not heard of the sender? I don’t, it goes right into the trash. I think most secretaries trash the sell sheets inventors send out unless you have spoken to the executive directly. I have learned that you have to get to a live person with a phone call before anything is emailed or mailed. Also, I never leave a message if the person does not answer. I just keep calling back until they answer. Good Luck.

Roger,
I get the magazine every month, but your CD’s give more info than you give to the magazine. That is my personal opinion. for example; I can give the recepit how make a cake but could’t give the whole secret recepit that is my point. In the magazine you give some point but Don’t give the whole picture you know better you are a bussiness man.

and again Thank you for advice is nothing personal.

Hi Eduardo, I may have to hire you as my marketing agent. : ) I appreciate the kind comments. I think there is still plenty of good information on the CDs. LOL Thanks for looking out for me.
Do you get the Inventor’s Digest magazine? If you don’t you should. Check out the link to my article in this months issue and let me know what you think of it. http://www.inventorsdigest.com/?p=5042

I’m glad you put your comment about how you pitching the companies. But Roger you don’t think you give to much infomation here, and the same time you sell your Cds. I don’t know let the people buy your CDs like other do. That’s my personal oppinion.

Before I contact a company I search through their website for a employee listing, I look on linkedin.com to see if any of the employee have an account and their position in the company. I also search for articles on the company that may have interviews by people in the company and their position. If all that fails then I call the company and ask for someone in new product development, marketing, or ask the operator if they have a contact within the company for outside product submissions.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I did research on companies that I think would be the best to contact first; who are inventor friendly.

And companies that didn’t have much information on submitting new products I was going to see if I could find out who the best person to contact within that company would be.

Based on your experience, who within a company do you think would be the best to contact initially (get my foot in the door), and hopefully that person could put my product in the hands of the “right” person within their company that I normally wouldn’t have access to?

Maybe my first initial contact (foot in the door) would be to the marketing/advertising dept? sales dept? etc…?

Thank you, again!

Do you have the companies you want to approach researched? Do you have a contact name in the company to ask for or their email address? Are you planning on cold calling and hope you get the right person or sending your inquiry to the companies main address asking them to forward it to the right person? Using the information@company.com or the help@company.com email addresses normally do not get a high rate of return responses.
You don’t want to send everything you have in the first communication. You want to find out what the companies policy for submission is and if they even look at outside ideas and do they have a process you must go through to submit ideas.
Look at a number of companies policies and you will see some state that if you send them somethiing unsolicted they can use it without your permission. Know the rules before you submit so you have a better chance of success.
