Building a Networking Site

I have seen many networking sites being developed. However, I have an idea of my own but I am not a website developer. How do I protect my idea? Where can I find a reasonable website designer that will enable me to expand my site? I am just starting out, but I have been holding onto this idea for a few years. I have a domain name. I am working on a logo. What is my next step?

There is quite a bit of work from where you currently are.

Elance and other freelancing sites are a great place to get programming done in an affordable way, however like anything else, a good background on what you are trying to acheive will come in very handy.

Most of these programmers will work on deliverying your requirements. But you really need to spell out the requirements, without leaving much room for (mis)interpretation which can get tricky based on the complexity of the idea and your knowledge of the domain.

As for protecting your idea, business method patents is an option, but I dont know how well they will uphold in the real world. Your patent is only as good as your ability to protect it.

If you are doing a networking site, unless its functionalities are drastically different than all the existing social networks, the chances of patent may not be too good.

You wont get a patent on the concept of social network itself, of adding friends, commenting, emailing, tagging pictures etc
If you know of a unique way to leverage existing network, developing a facebook applicaton would be an option.
