anybody out there to whom this might be relevant – i’ve got a t-shirt website called www.StateHeadShirts.com through www.cafepress.com. they host the site and print the shirts and everything, but i just upload the graphic design. consequently, they take the lionshare of the revenue. anybody have any idea how much it would cost to get an equivalent website designed and implemented so i could de-couple from the cafepress business model?
any thoughts are welcome. also, i’d be interested in local t-shirt printing – i’m in st. louis, mo.
thanks!

Hi Dave, You can check companies like Spreadshirt that do a similar thing like cafe press but not sure they could do much better for you. The high quality ink jet digital printers that cafe press uses to print one shirts at a time are $100000+ each. If you have the volume you can check into smaller units by just googling ink jet t-shirt printer. You can also check out vistaprint and see if they would save you anything as a reseller but the hassle may not be worth it since you would need to place each order yourself. Other than that you could always ink jet print higher quality iron ons at home and see how they work by washing them 25 times. They have improved but maybe not enough to sell them yet. I know ones I had made from the sources above all were decent overall. Your biggest problem I forsee will be handling the printing and warehousing of enough product to get a decent price since you would need sizes of each shirt and colors you wanted to carry. Cafepress does that well because of their economies of scale with hundreds of thousands of users. Maybe raise you price a bit on lower margin items. If you lose 50% of your sales but make twice as much what difference is it for your bottom line. With your novelty like product I don’t see a sale leaving if someone really wants it for a gift or themselves only if they are someone that is strickly price sensitive. If they are that way for a couple or few $$ more then they may not buy anyways if there is shipping, taxes and the like added in to the final cost. Good luck on your shirt sales! Chris |
