EN Needs A Logout Button!
osizzy27's Avatar

Hi EN Team, I’m not sure if it’s just me that is having this problem or if everyone else is also. Everytime I log in to my profile, I can never find a logout button when I’m done. That makes me nervous because I’m always thinking that my profile will then easily get hacked into by unknown people. Maybe you can add it by doing this: after logging in, the green “Log In Now” button at the top right corner should turn into “Log Out”

Thanks for getting it all fixed up! Always good to stay functioning with the still standard out-of-the-box software system to not alienate new folks who aren’t as technologically inclined to pursue alternatives.

Thank you for your comments, Matt (about a week ago). I had the whole thing done FOR me – much safer – but he did save the old files (with virus) and then made a duplicate of the new one so I will have it in case something else goes wrong.

We updated the code late last night to play nicely with IE9 (IE9 removed a universally-compliant feature that we were using in their "upgrade"’ from IE8). The Logout button is indeed now working again as intended on IE9.

We broke the bolding of new messages in the forums in the process but all is now fixed. We’re sorry for making your morning’s reviews of the forums a little more difficult than normal but everything should be good now.

P.S. As someone who cares about the standards of the Web, this is probably a good time to encourage everybody to stop using IE and upgrade to one of the much better, free, alternatives. I’d recommend Mozilla Firefox – http://www.mozilla.org . Others might recommend Google Chrome – http://www.google.com/chrome . Either is much better than IE.

Thanks tech team!

Looks like progress on this front, unless something odd happened on my end. I now have a logout button in IE9. And I can edit my messages again, yipee. (since I am classic at missing a word here and there and editing to fix immediately after.)

To set the current webpage as the home page

Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer.

Navigate to the webpage you would like to set as the home page.

Click the arrow to the right of the Home button , and then click Add or Change Home Page.

In the Add or Change Home Page dialog box, do one of the following:

To make the current webpage your only home page, click Use this webpage as your only home page.

To start a home page tab set or to add the current webpage to your set of home page tabs, click Add this webpage to your home page tabs.

To replace your existing home page or home page tab set with the webpages you currently have open, click Use the current tab set as your home page. This option will only be available if you have more than one tab open in Internet Explorer.

Click Yes to save your changes.

I don’t like IE9 Sherri. Wait as long as you can I say. I’m sure you can make EN your homepage. I know there’s a place to type that in on your computer, but I forget. Someone will surely chime in.

I haven’t updated to this “9” yet..and think I’m not going to at this time. I realize that I will probably have other weird issues with keeping IE8 and will have to eventually update. For now I will just hide and watch!

Wish I could make Edison Nation my homepage though!

I am having this same problem after updating IE (no logout feature). Any news yet? Is it dangerous if we can’t log out and just close the internet?

Matt your right AVG is a GREAT free software. I also use “Advanced System Care 4”, which is compatible with AVG. I also run Advanced Quick Care Program", after I have been on the Internet daily, it’s GREAT. It’s kind of like washing the dishes before going to bed, haha. “Keeps my PC clean”.

Julie,
Before you transfer the “good stuff” make sure you scan all of the old files that you want to transfer (before moving them to your new hard drive) with the latest antivirus software. If you accidentally move an infected file over, you’ll end up with the same problem all over again. AVG is a great, free, program that won’t slow your computer down as much as some of the usual suspects: http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

I now have a new hard drive after a very nasty virus attacked my browser, IE. I’m telling you this only so you will be on the lookout for anything weird happening: I discovered it when I did internet searches and really odd stuff popped up – rather than what I was looking for. Another clue was that I would be reading posts on EN and then the screen went blank and EN was no longer there – not even on the bottom of the screen (whatever that is called).

Didn’t HAVE to have a new hard drive since the virus could be taken care of other ways; however, with the age of the laptop (5 yrs.), that seemed to be the best choice – to just start over, transferring just the good stuff.

Chris, it sounds like something happened to the button moving from IE8 to 9. I’m sure the EN techies will have a fix soon.

Internet Explorer is the browser that I use. I’m able to see a log out button on my smart phone but not my laptop on internet explorer which is weird.

Chris,
There is a logout button/functionality as noted by Eric. We’re going to fire up a testing environment running IE9 and see if we can replicate the issue. If we can, we’ll fix it. In the meantime, you could use Firefox or Chrome to gain that functionality. When you log on with the other browser, it should kill your session in IE, provided that you’ve shut it down prior to visiting with the other browser.

Thanks,
Matt

It seems to me to be a broken cookie issue under IE9. Once I switched to 9, I lost Edit Post and logout and the ability to see which threads I’ve read.

I have one in the upper right corner. What browser are you using. I have it when using my IPad, Firefox and IE.
