Site Suggestions

I’m sure there’s been a topic like it out there, but I thought I’d start a thread about ideas and suggestions we as members and users would like to see on Edison Nation. A sort of wish list.

We know the staff is really busy and hard at work, but we know that they are also very receptive to feedback and input on how to continue to make this site the best it can.

Feel free to post anything…and who knows, maybe they’ll listen.

Ok, here’s a few I’ve heard and personally would like to see on the site.

1. An easy way to add or suggest links that are related to inventing.

2. How about time stamps on the forum? I know it shows how long ago the reply or post was made, but why not a time stamp?

3. What about some sort of private forum or feedback/focus group area where members can send out invites to other members to answer questions, give feedback, etc. Ideally some sort of NDA would be nice, but its understood that its a good faith thing and EN would not be responsible.

4. How about the ability to add pictures to posts? Polls?

5. How about having a description of what goes on at each level of the online casting call.

6. Some sort of status report to let you know how you fair not only on the dashboard, but overall in the search. I’d love to know that 20% of the people who have submitted are left in the running.

7. How about a store? I know there’s alot of people that would love to show of some Edison Nation gear. Shirts, Hats, Inventor’s apron/smock (would be a great way to keep my clothes in good shape while inventing).

8. What about Guest bloggers?

Ok, I’m sure there are more and I’m happy with the service EN is giving, just offering some feedback.

1)How about a reference page where it lists the topic like “patents” and anyone can suggest a book or a link as a reference and then others can post their opinions on those books or links. That way you don’t waste $30.00 on a book that 90% of the people feel is worthless.

2) I’m guessing that they don’t have a time stamp because of the time zones. Maybe they would just use Eastern time and stipulate that so everyone knows?

3) I actually suggested the private forum to the Q&A Creator forum but have not received a response yet. I called it a “think tank” but also suggested that we work as a team and submit an entry as a team and EN would host.

6) The status report or percentage was actually suggested by Matt in a previous forum. A few people responded positively on that.

7) I’m not liking the store because then more people will know about this and my chances then become more slim at winning anything – I know I am selfish! EN would love it for the publicity I’m thinking.

8) Do you mean like pro inventors as guest bloggers? That would be really cool.

Need a way to delete (remove) skills from profile… When you screw it up like it did you want to be able to start over.

I would like one simple feature added. A way to alert the EN team that an update, correction or addition has been submitted to a particular project.

A simple box with a flag, with a 20 or 30 word limit to explain the change(s) and/or addition(s). I think it would help everybody. I think it would help the system. The flag may then be turned off (It turns gray), when the EN team has noted the revision. Just an idea.

Also, and I know that this is asking too much, but here it goes anyway:

Right now the projects are listed in reverse chronological order (Last one first) It would be good to be able to also list them by sponsor. This is useful, as the number of projects will naturally keep growing, the screening of previous LPS will be easier to locate compatible projects and just click to submit to the new sponsor. Just an idea.

Hi Art,
Glad to see you out here! You can remove a skill. It could probably be a little more intuitive but here’s how you do it:

- Go to your profile
- Click on the skill you want to remove
- Click the “Remove Skill” link in the top right corner

Thanks for your suggestions Joaco! We’ll consider adding them to our development list – same for yours’ Patrice :-)

I think everything on the site is just perfect! (Do I get enough brownie points to win an LPS now?)

Hey Michael great idea…

So I had some free time today and created a little off site chat web page for members to take conversations off the forums if they want.

I only had the hour to put it all together but I will make it better when I have more time.

Most chats take some time before everyone finds out about them and starts to use them so if no one is online give it some time. Private conversations can be had between users by clicking on their user names on the right side of the chat box. Additionally, for your convenience I included a direct link to return you to the forums.

Happy inventing everyone…

perhaps a sitewide NDA form so that a person who wishes to discuss with another their idea, they would go to a page with a generic nda and each would sign in real time, would then be saved so that there is an official nda on file rather than mailing one back and forth. we could have it on our profile so if you want to sign an nda you would go to my profile, click on a link and go straight to the nda, then you would sign with your name and use your EN password to authenticate. Hope this made sense.

This question is about most websites in general. Why, when you click on a link, are you directed to the oldest post at the top rather than the newest post on the bottom? Can’t the original post appear on the bottom of the last post as well? The current method seems newbie-centric.

ralf – click on “show preferences” in the upper right corner of the forum and you can reverse the order. The original post, which started the forum, has to be first; otherwise, no one would know the subject. (Not that that seems to matter a lot of times…. ;>) )

Thanks Julie, that’s much better but I’d still like to be able to read from bottom up. Picky, I know, but on twitter it would make it easier to read continued posts. On here, I guess I could stand on my head and view the screen reflected off a mirror. Now I have to invent a chair that allows that; something with a hole and shoulder pads.

would be nice to have it like some websites i’ve seen where it brings up the thread at the oldest “new” post.

Bumpity Bump…

I was wondering if EN would consider putting a ‘Banner Display Board’ on winners profiles. I’ve noticed we have quite a few forum members that have had G8’s and Name search wins multiple times…i.e…Ralf and Eric…just to name two

Kind of like a ‘Blue Ribbon Trophy display case’ Then when anyone clicks on their profile they can see how successfull a person really can be on this site…conveys bragging rights for the winner as well as Bragging rights for EN when new folks are wondering…“Hey does this really happen? Can I be more than just a One Hit Wonder?”

might even be cool if the badge holder could click between the types…‘Name Search’, ‘G8’ and ‘Everyday Edison’ and choose which one they want to display on any given day…

just a thought I wanted to throw out there….

Great idea Krissie .. That would be awesome .. winning is contagious spirit …

Also now that you have Matt’s attention can I add possibly having a more detailed Name Search Dashboard … Anything that provides exciting and motivational feedback goes a long way here and the more we see the more fun it is … Just another thought..

Thanks Patricia!

and wouldn’t it be cool if when you hovered over or clicked on the individual banners if they flew a little flag naming the search that it had won…(I don’t know what you call those little expanded info thingy’s that materialize when you scroll over something)
