How do I get started?

I am so very new to this scene, and have decided to take a step out of my comfort zone to get my invention out of my head. Often I find myself telling my colleagues, family and friends, that I just wish I could be paid for my ideas, and am encouraged to do so without haste! So, I am going to try it! I have a prototype already made and have tested it, and all is a go! HOWEVER...I don't know where to start. Do I need a patent from the start? Should I contact an attorney, and if so, what type of attorney? How much should it cost to get my invention patented? How long does it take? Anyone who has a minute to share with me and/or take me under their wing, I am happy to reward you with my invention, as I am certain if you do not sleep alone, you will love it!
