We rarely give much thought to the origins of the clothing we wear. Early man had to make do with animal skins to protect him from the elements. Later he evolved to curing animal skins to create leather clothes. From there he learnt how to weave together different fibres to create cloth and has never looked back since. Clothes today are not only worn to keep us warm, but to facilitate freedom of movement during various physical activities. We wear specific clothing for surfing, swimming, mountain climbing, fishing and skiing. Clothing has also been designed to identify people, as in uniforms for the military, doctors, nurses and even clergymen and sporting teams. Clothing is also most distinctive for defining you individual genders. As a gender we are defined by our clothing from early infancy, when as little girls we are dressed in pink or in blue for little boys. Boys are never dressed in skirts of dresses and it is only little girls who wear lace or frills. From an early age our style of dress defines us. Fashion through the ages has had a guiding hand in how we dress and which items of clothing we wear. In earlier centuries it was commonplace for men to wear stockings, heels, wigs and to powder their faces. Cravats, waist coats, top hats, fur muffs and spats were all fashionable items worn to define the age and to individualize the person wearing them. Our underwear, though rarely viewed by others, can say much about our characters. Diverse styles and colors are available and you can choose to buy underwear that is basic and serviceable or you can go way out, adorning your body in items covered in gems, feathers and lace. It is all about what you find attractive and comfortable. The bra has evolved over the years from a device for support to a fashion accessory. It has now been designed to not only enhance the cleavage, but to define your own personal style and has evolved to encompass corsets and bustiers of all shapes and forms. A variety of color combinations in the same style can give a completely different effect, from pastel green and shocking blue to orange or royal purple. What sort of styling are you drawn to? Are you a jeans and t-shirts kind of person or do you feel feminine in long flowing skirts and high heels? Look at the detailing that attracts you. Are you drawn to belts, buckles, zippers, buttons, round necks, v-necks, square necks or broad collars? These seemingly insignificant details can either make an outfit daring and exciting or relaxed and feminine. Shoes are also a very important part of individual styling. A different impression is created by adding a pair of pink high heels to an outfit than what a pair of square-toed cowboy boots might create. The great thing about clothes is that most outfits are interchangeable and you can use the same basic items but by adding accessories like scarves, hats or coats, can make each outfit original. Color and basic materials also play an important role, completely altering the appearance of the same basic style.
