Car Insurance - Why You Require A Policy
October 17, 2010
When you own a car, you have a lot of responsibility. Not only is it one of the biggest purchases you will ever make, but it also one of the most dangerous. Yes, it will cost you a pretty penny, which means either maintaining a good credit score or saving up enough cash to buy it outright, either way, it is no small task. Lt us see why you need car insurance.
Getting a loan is quite the task. It involves applications and qualifications and making regular monthly payments. While this is quite the responsibility, you also need to make car insurance payments as well, because many banks require it when you take out a loan. Of course, since the law requires that you drive with insurance, this is not such a big deal. However, you do need to know what the requirements are for each state.
The first thing you need to know is that you need to carry liability insurance at the very least. Basically, this takes care of you in the event of an accident and you need to pay damages for injury or property. It doesn’t do anything else, so it is often recommended that you extend your policy, but it’s the bare minimum to drive legally.
If you do consider extending your car insurance policy, then you will also want to look at a comprehensive and collision deductible. This helps to cover the cost of repairs up to a limit that you determine beforehand. The comprehensive portion covers damages to your vehicle when it is not in use while collision covers damages that incur while you are driving.
Every state is different, which also changes how each of these extensions work. For example, if you live in a Tort state, you have to be found guilty of a crime or responsible for causing an accident before “blame” is assigned and damages are assessed. Regardless of whether you are involved with property damage, an injury collision, or a hit and run, the law must always find fault, in these states.
On the other hand, you could live in what is called a “no-fault” state. In these states, if you are in an accident, you are responsible for paying for your own repairs. These are vastly different and can be quite a shock to someone who moves to another state and hasn’t done their research.
Although it is required by law for you to carry car insurance at all times when operating a motor vehicle, it is up to you to determine how much you would prefer to buy. Indeed this can be a difficult choice, since full coverage can be very expensive. Of course, if your vehicle is worth a lot of money or you cannot afford to be without out, there really is no price too high.
For many people, auto insurance seems like a hassle either because they have been in too many accidents or they have credit issues. These folks are called “high-risk” and although their situation is different, there are still car insurance companies out there who can serve them.
