Online MLM Marketing Explaining Frequent Myths

May 31, 2010

There are lots of myths about online MLM marketing opportunities. The truth is that most of these companies offer the opportunity to run your own business following a proven business plan. As long as due diligence is done and a good company selected then the chances of success depend on the person and not the opportunity. But people who have been unsuccessful would rather believe that the business was at fault so these common myths still circulate.

Myth: MLM is just a pyramid scam. Truth: Pyramid schemes are based on making money by getting people to join – without any real products or services being involved. With a sustainable MLM scheme all monies earned are commissions and override commissions on actual products sold. The pyramid name comes from the shape of the business structure, but most businesses have this structure. Look at a successful large business near you – a managing director at the top, then a board of directors, then regional managers, then area managers, and so on – looks like a pyramid doesn’t it?

Myth: This is a “get rich quick” scam. Truth: It is not suggested that you will become a millionaire overnight! There are no ceilings to the amount of money that can be made. The amount of time it will take is dependent on the time and effort put into the business. This opportunity will often be able to offer a large income relatively fast when compared to a traditional job or small business.

Myth: It will cost a lot of money to get started. Truth: Not for a genuine online business! The initial investment should be small, perhaps a joining fee and business kit (which is usually a small commitment just to show that you are serious). Then a few business incidentals such as a website will be needed. Product fulfillment will usually be taken care of by the parent company. There should be no need for lots of expensive samples or to hold substantial stocks.

Myth: You need to get in early to have any chance of success. Truth: This is only true for scams! In a genuine opportunity the money is made from some sort of consumable product – so there are always repeat buyers and new buyers. This means that there is always a need for new sales agents. A well run business does not need thousands of people in the down-line to achieve a respectable income, so there will always be room for new people.

Myth: Only the people at the top will succeed. Truth: There is potential for success and a good income at every level of the business. The people at the top will make more, but there is always room at the top in this type of business. The opportunity exists to make the amount of money required depending on the time and effort put in to building a business.

Myth: Family and Friends have to be signed up. Truth: This is not the case for a business based on harnessing the power of the internet. This used to be the case for an offline MLM situation where it was difficult to find new prospects. The power of the internet makes it a lot easier to find new recruits. When you are a success friends and family will be asking to join you.

Online MLM marketing is a great opportunity to make decent money from home in pajamas. But this shouldn’t be confused with needing no time and no effort. Choose the right parent company, learn the skills needed, and give the opportunity enough time to let momentum build. For the right people the opportunity will provide a chance to make a great income.
