The Long Long Long....wait for it...Long wait

November 02, 2010

Well, the show is over even though they never aired it in my area. All the big reveals have happened for all of us Season 3 inventors and now it’s just a matter of time. You’d think by now I’d be used to this waiting game but I must admit it hasn’t gotten any easier. In fact I’d say this last wait is the most difficult so far. This is the wait between myself and the reality of just what the last 3 years or so of my life have been all about. It’s been almost 3 years since I attended that first casting call for Season 3 of Everyday Edisons. You all know the story by now, no big secrets anymore but none of us including myself know what is going to happen next.

We all know what is supposed to happen but there are no guarantees. That is the hardest part of all of this. Waiting so long and there being no guarantee it will be successful or even happen for that matter.

What is supposed to happen is that World Kitchen picks up the folding baking pan idea where Everyday Edisons left off and they develop a set of pans using my patent and Everyday Edisons single prototype as their guide. That part has already begun and they are about 3 months in on making that happen. I’m told I need to expect to wait at least 6 months before I’ll see anything from their end. They are supposed to be doing the market research and come up with the best folding pan/pan set possible that is inexpensive and quick to manufacture that has the best name and packaging possible and will sell for the highest margin. This mythical set of pans will then be sold on QVC under the Pyrex name. From there they are supposed to help Pyrex get their foot in the door at some of the higher end kitchen store chains. Once there they are supposed to be the next great thing that everyone wants and will buy making World Kitchen, QVC, Enventys and eventually myself all rich beyond our wildest dreams or at the very least make us all a nice profit.

That is the part I’ve been waiting for and continue to wait for. After all this time no one can yet tell me what it may be worth or what to expect in real world terms if all the development and planning on everyone’s parts comes together. I’m sure that World Kitchen has some idea of what it will cost and how much it may make. They’ve had to run the numbers and come up with potential sales/profit figures. I know Enventys has signed a licensing deal with World Kitchen to allow them to use the patent and develop the pans and they too have some sense of the potential. They at the very least know what World Kitchen is paying for the right to use and develop the idea. I unfortunately am not privy to that licensing deal and do not get to sit in on any of the update meetings or any of the market research and product development they are currently going through. I have to sit this one out and wait which as an inventor is a very difficult thing to do. I really want to help and be a part of it all but know my contribution was in the concept and initial prototype and is now over and it’s time to leave it to the pros. That is a very hard thing to do. If everything goes well sometime around the end of February 2011 if they are on track and I’m lucky I’ll get to see what the Pyrex version of the folding baking pans may look like and learn a little about what they are thinking. At that point I may get a clue as to whether or not they will make the QVC window for selling bake ware in 2011 which runs Sept-December each year as people gear up for the holidays. I’m told we are shooting for the 2011 window. If we make it then I might see my first albeit small royalty check based on whatever sells by the end of December 2011. If God forbid they miss that window I’ll get to wait another entire year before they even start to sell making their debut in 2012. This all started in 2008 for me so 2012 would be quite a wait indeed.

All is good and all is wonderful and I couldn’t have asked Everyday Edisons for a better possible outcome. I mean QVC/World Kitchen and Pyrex! I am so very fortunate to have gone to that casting call so I am in no way complaining. I know how lucky I am but I have to tell you by the time I actually see the final product and eventually my first royalty check I will definitely feel as though I earned it. I may not be involved anymore but I am definitely a part of it and I have a lot of hopes and dreams tied up in this one products outcome. It could potentially change my life and I may have already put all that into motion but only time will tell. Will it make those dreams come true? I sure hope so. Will it happen in 2011? Again I sure hope so. Do you know what happens if it doesn’t? Yep, you guessed it I wait a little longer. Hopefully it will be worth the long and torturous wait. Holly the inventor of the Shoe skirt coined a name for these long waits and the inventors general lack of knowledge about what happens to our products while they are in the development void. She calls it “Funnoying” and I think that one word sums this whole process up perfectly. I really must say this has been one hell of a “funnoying” adventure and one I’ve been proud to be a part of.
