Karen Norris's Blog Entries
It's Happening.
January 22, 2010
So I've looked at this blank blog a few times, waiting to write until I found the perfect title, the perfect entry, to report this news... Obviously you can see I decided to just start typing... I am writing with great joy, humility, and excitement and here to report "its happening...." Recently I signed off on licensing deal and now have the opportunity to make and market my first product on DRTV. Wow. Sort of feels like getting the ticket to Vegas (like in 'So you think you can dance' or 'American Ideal')...I have no idea what will happen from here but I am so incredibly lucky and excited to simply have the chance to see... In the past 6 months I have learned so much... I feel like I am getting my masters in 'DRTV'. My advice thus far, READ. Read patent books, licensing books, EN digest magazine, threads on this site. You need to know it, not count on someone else to advise you... The more you learn the more questions you know to ask and the more road traps you can TRY to avoid. I am hesitant to give any details right at this time but I will, I promise to write about this journey and communicate to all of you the little things I learn along the way and the things I'd do different already...it is just to raw, too fresh and happening too fast to do right now. Plus I'm a bit superstitious, feeling that if I tell you the good it will turn to bad and if I report the bad I am not grateful for the good... So I'll wait to get into details until we get closer to market. I will say though on a personal level that it all feels like it is clicking for the first time... Like most of you I always new I had ideas, could always think of the clever tagline, the new way to use an old thing, a great marketing pitch. And my entire life I knew I wanted to do something of my own, my own business, or something... but what? I tried on careers over the years (not jumping into them) but researching franchises, physical stores, internet business, how about a vstore, an agency, a blank, blank, blank... But none ever felt right. I didn't dream of a storefront, home franchise still felt borrowed, ...would I spend forever more wondering what it was I meant to do? And then came Edison Nation, a new friend Christine told me about this site... I tried it and it was the start to a whole new world for me... Who knew there were so many other people like me, so fun to talk to others with the 'bug'.. who knew there was a safe place to submit once-in-a-lifetime chances... but most importantly who knew people can, and do, make a living out of just thinking and selling ideas? I never knew, I never knew. That's it. That's what I was meant to do. This is what I think I was born to do. There is a reason I was born with this natural instinct to think up new things. But this gig is complex... you can't just jump in it is a business that you need some money to start and I'll need to look before leaping. But for now I continue to hope, to pray, that this current deal may pay off just enough... that just maybe if this goes a little bit right I will get the chance to purse this dream further. I am happy to make it this far. To have the chance (not to make money or seek fame) but the chance to do what feels right to be doing. To all of you I wish you encouragement and hope—keep going, I didn't know how, why or when, just knew that I had to....
Laughing
February 15, 2010
As I prep for new ideas to enter into the XMas tree shop and ASTOV I can't help laughing thinking of how many of us are running around the house looking for materials, collecting random objects, making a mess in every room... In one hour last night I managed to mess up my closet and destroy two perfecly functioning items I own because I needed to cut out the zipper to show how an invention might work. And bless our spouses who patiently nod, hit pause on the movie for an hour, and try their best to give advice. I had an hour debate last night as I listened to my husbad tell me why a hair product would not work and he has a buzz cut! Just had to share the laughter otherwise I'd cry knowing I only have a few more hours until the weekend is over and I must take off my inventor hat comes off and put on my marketing manager hat .... If anyone has 50k they don't need so I can do this full time you know where to find me... OK going to cut, staple and test random objects. For the XMas tree contest I'll pretend I'm in my north pole workshop. Tip: I started to keep a big bag of random objects...when the juice bottle is done..goes in the bag, clothespin in draw.. in the bag, old shirt..in the bag, when it comes to invention testing time I can use the random pieces in the bag instead of destroying actual items. Continued luck to all. P.S. This week I should get the first sample from China on my first product development project, cross your fingers for me its been a long wait thus far.
12 Step Program for Idea Addicts: Newcomers to EN Beware
March 18, 2010
Repost from thread: http://www.edisonnation.com/forums/just-for-fun/topics/im-addicted-to-edison-nation 12 Step Program for Idea Addicts Step 1: Be happy with what is, not what could be. Open a kitchen cabinet, or draw, and resist the temptation to look at all the gadgets and think about how they might be improved… Start with one meal a day simply enjoying how things are and not how they might be designed some day…. Step 2: Once a day dashboard reviews. While it is true that from 1:01pm to 1:02pm your dashboard might change you must show restraint. For the first week try only to visit your dashboard once a day, instead of every hour on the hour. If you must first start by cutting back to am and pm viewings. Step 3: Speak free. Remember the days when you would throw out an idea at the dinner table? Talk about your hit innovation over the holidays (with a group of STRANGERS)? Are you walking around with NDA’s in your pocket?? Reclaim your freedom. This week speak openly about an idea without the fear that someone will submit a PPA three minutes later. Step 4: Put the highlighter down. It’s OK to read Inventor’s Digest just for pleasure every once in a while. Put the highlighter away… Just once read it through without ripping out a page or adding a resource to your to do list. Step 5: Get it touch with your feelings. Instead of your normal quick posting, “out at R6, done at R7”, let it out once in a while, say what you really mean… i.e. “How could they not see this idea for the genius it is!”, “Great, now I have to go to work again on Monday”, “I waited 12 months for this dream idea t make it, now what”. Get it out, express your R’s. Step 6: Talk out loud. If you’ve talked to your thumbnail photo friends more than your family, or personal friends, it may be time to pick up the phone. Hear a voice, speak out loud, remember what it was like to hear an instant response and not wait for a post. Step 7: Buy something fun for $20. Remember when $20 bought you movie tickets or lunch…clothing or home purchases? Instead of the next $20 going to yet another idea, stop for a moment and just buy something fun. Step 8: Sleep is sleep. When you lay your head down on the pillow remember it means that it is time to sleep, not time to think of new product names and ideas. For one week in a row forbid yourself to think of new ideas when the lights go out. Step 9: Remove LPS Pressure It’s OK to skip a live product search. Stop. Breathe. Repeat it with me, “it is OK to skip a search”…once in a while it is OK to let a search go by without a submission. This will take time, but maybe you start by letting the ‘automatic talking parrot that presses your clothes’ idea go, and wait for true inspiration… Step 10: Do not reinvent the steps. If you are reading the steps, thinking about new, novel, unobvious ideas on how to improve the steps you have a true problem! Do not rework or add figure diagrams to these steps, this will contradict all other progress. Step 11: Acceptance. The sooner you accept that EN staff will not call you to personally say how brilliant your idea was; that a search will not progress to G8 in two weeks; if your idea was the one that ‘almost’ made it, the calmer you will be… Step 12: But wait there’s more… No, not here. Step 12 is simply Step 12. You don’t get 12 steps and then another 12 steps for free. There’s no extra incentive. No call in the next five for a free offer. It’s just 12 steps plain and simple. Learn to accept that not everything will come in doubles with free random items… Print. Execute. And look forward to violating all steps with you all in the future ;)

Wasn't expecting that last week....caaraazyyy...
April 20, 2010
Oh my....talk about a crazy week last week. So I've been working hard to finalize the development of my new product. Note: I will be sure to build a little blog about to show you photos and video shortly...but anyway on with this short story... So I'm working tirelessly with China every night after I come home from work to perfect my product--while the DRTV company I'm working with conceives ideas for the commercial... They tell me, when we have a draft script we'll be sure to pass it by you... Excitedly I wait. Until last week I get a call from the producer on my cell... Hi Karen, I have a draft script I'm sending over for your review. Great, I say.... she reads over the phone, my smile grows and grows... and then she says, "so we are shooting the commercial tomorrow if you want to drive to NJ to be on set". Tomorrow? Tomorrow? Um, I work FL as a marketing executive, I plan 3 years out and she says tomorrow. Anyway I say I'll be there on way or the other. Oh yeah and she leaves off saying, 'bring a shirt in case I decide to put you in front of the camera'. Um, OK I say. Hang up. Must work the rest of the day visualizing my wardrobe and leave for the first time in 2 years at 5pm on the dot. Come home, let the madness ensue. Call boss, take day off. Next, nails, run to salon. Do I go with color, clear or french.....hmmm she didn't say, what would they want. Classic french, yes I'll go with the french. French pink or french white (lady says in Chinese action), uh...french neutral. Go home. Eat. Brush, put crest white strip on. Floss. Pick shirt, pick another shirt. What the hell I'll take this suit, and this shirt. OK so I traveled with about 20 outfits in the car, is that a problem? Which earrings? Hmm... studs, no pearls, no a little bling... I'll bring 'em all. Necklace, you know it, bring 3. OK, now how do I get rid of forehead wrinkles and 5 pounds tonight? Ummm, can't be done, move on to shoes...open toe, heals, I'm 5'4 do I want to be 5'6 on camera, um...little heal yes I'll go with a 2 incher... Do I do my own makeup, will they have a makeup woman? I'll apply and take? I'll pack cleanser, eye makeup remover and all my makeup in case they want to redo... Camera check. iPod Touch of product development photos check (in case CEO is there, I can show my hard work to date.) No pimples this week, thank goodness, then what would I do? And she is so lucky I was just back in NY over easter and had my hair highlighted (a tragedy avoided for sure). Fit in a quick yoga stretch. Breathe. Pack all. Sleep, ok try to sleep. This is what happens when a type A personality gets 5 hours notice that she may be part of a Direct Response TV commercial... So my husband is nice enough to also take the day off and drive me to NJ from PA... he should be there too anyway with all the product development support he's provided me over the past 8 months. Keeping me sane and calm. Umm yes I realize from the paragraph above it might not look that way. Anyway, coffee, car, hit road at 7. Arrive at 9am, park across street first to pee, hate to walk into places and say a minute later, 'Hi where's the bathroom?' Go in, meet team, start calming down. They are all so nice, local, casual set. Crew of about 7. Immediately they continue shooting... the producer is doing a wonderful job to capture great product shots! Love her ideas. She thanked me for the advance script and F&B sheet I sent to her (remember type A personality here).. Spent all day on set. Great to see 18 of my products in one place. Take undercover photos. Break for lunch at noon (I eat the dry cereal I packed, no need to eat a big spread before TV debut). She tells me to write an intro. and ending to frame the commercial. I give a blank stair..she says aloud her ideas and I basically write them down... They give me a shirt. Um yes I brought twelve and they gave me a blue one they had in wardrobe. My own makeup but they tell me more blush, more blush... They spray my hair. Cough. Lights on, on and rolling... No teleprompter. I introduce myself as the inventor and introduce the product. I do it again, and again. Again and again. Shouts come my way, more smile, less eyebrow Karen, slower, faster, energy, you seem angry now, slow down, speed up. Anyway I did about 20 minutes of takes, wasn't nervous but have no idea what the final will look like or if it will get used at all. The day ended around 4pm. I thanked the producer with a journal I wrote and published this past year....gave back my borrowed shirt, took a photo with the actress and hit the road. Both my husband and I were so glad we didn't miss it, what an opportunity to watch the product I invented, patented, developed and help name come to life on camera!!! Hey had I not took off work I would have never been stuck in front of the camera. Again don't know if my portion will make it or be left on the cutting room floor but if you guys see me in your living room you'll know how it all went down.... I'll be sure to keep you all posted. PS Looking back I'm glad they only gave me a 5 hour notice, otherwise most likely I'd have spent money to professionally whiten my teeth, buy a new outfit, get my hair cut in the city, get the mani/pedi just because and stress... It all happens for a reason, can't wait to read the end of this book. This chapter was definitely a fun experience!
Didn't Make the Cutting Room Floor...
April 30, 2010
Hi EN Friends... so I found out this week that I did not make the cutting room floor, in other words I will not be featured in my own ASTOV product commercial. The CEO said that he prefers to put product infront of personality. My intro. was only about 16 seconds but in direct response time a lifetime (they could show so many additional product features in that time) and afterall that is what their selling... I have to tell you I am nothing but relieved! Honestly. Although having the opportunity to strike a licensing deal (to have my product manufactured) is a dream come true there is a very real, very nerve racking, serious business side to all of this... Licensing contracts, lawyers, manufacturer liabilities etc. When they put me in front of the camera I was excited and thought it was "Cool". But besides for bragging rights, immediately after the shoot I could only think of so many reasons NOT to be in the commercial... I thought of elementary school, high school friends, college friends calling... what it they ordered the product and hated it (of course they won't :)) but what if... were they going to call me/find me on facebook... What about the company that is in competition with our product?... The guy that had a similar idea but different patent?... The buyer that received a return?... do I really want them knowing me? Not really, I'd rather do what I do best the inventing and product development and let someone else deal with the day-to-day headaches. Now maybe there would be no down side in being part of the commercial, maybe I'm a cynic but there was a lot of stress involved in thinking of my face just popping up on cable stations.. Remember, my largest concern was because I still work Full time!!! I imagined my company's CEO watching TV one night and saying, "Hey, isn't that Karen that works in the Marketing department?" Can't be good for career growth. PS If he reads this, I spent every weekend working on my own time. Yes haven't seen friends/family or had fun in about a year now, hopefully this hits so I can have some fun time! Although I actually find all this fun. I was going to start a forum with you all to brainstorm the pros and cons of being on the commercial and get your thoughts but then I found out the news. So in the end it all worked out for the best. From day one with all of this I've had to say, "Whatever will be will be.". And that's my advice for any normal working person turned ASTOV inventor overnight... You do your best, work your hardest, protect yourself and your IP but in the end if the product is meant to be a success it will be and you have no control ultimately. In regards to my next steps... I am awaiting a digital file of the commercial and a 1-800 number, I asked the CEO if I could promote via viral methods before the commerical airs and he said "Go for it" so as soon as I get the information from him I can announce to you all. Note: For those of you who asked yes this licensing deal was established between me and a company outside of EN. But for this particular idea I had already paid thousand of dollars and was the awarded patent holder. I continue to be a loyal fan to EN as I'm sure you all realize the ability to have the chance to bring a product to market without spending the 10-20k in patent expenses is truly a wonderful opportunity! For the new folks on EN, to give you an idea, I've submitted over 20 ideas to EN (been in the forums for about a year), almost all ideas made it to G3, about 7 or so to G5 and two so far to G7, one currently at G7.. I continue to hold my breath on the G7 and have been logging into my dashboard less frequently as I am scared to see a dreaded red X.... Also, be patient and take G5, G6, and G7 as great acknowledgements, but with EN or without, even if an idea is selected it will most likely be a year to 2 before you know if it will make you any money. So keep thinking, keep submitting and "don't put all your eggs in one G". A quote only EN players would understand... have a nice weekend of inventing. Finally, if all works out and as a next step they ask me to do the QVC commerical, of course I'll say yes ;)) PS I'm a Gemini.
It's REAL! Introducing StackMates....here we go...lift off...see it at www.buystackmates.com
May 12, 2010
Well I'm not a mother, but after about 9 months of waiting I'm happy to introduce you all to my new baby.... Introducing the STACKMATES Storage System! So since I last posted on EN, I hadn't heard any news about the launch of Stack Mates on TV and then last night I get a call & email saying, "Oh we ran the commercial over Mother's Day" and posted it on youtube? Wh, wh, wh, what?????????? So I guess it is safe to say that I can now tell you all the product ;) I hope you love it, if not pretending is always good... If anyone saw this commercial air over this past weekend let me know...unfortunately I did not and hope one day to bump into it on live TV. You can view the commercial and other video clips on youtube at (or search STACKMATES): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpM5lBpKUAY If you like the product, please feel free to spam away...place the links on your facebook postings, myspace, linkedin (go nuts), forward the links to millions of people (I need a social media campaign to get me into FT inventing ;) ... When I learned they aired the commercial and posted the commercial on youtube (without having a website ready yet), I worked fast and furious to create a little blog highlighting the product features and benefits...you can check it out at: http://stackmates.blogspot.com/ (page may take a sec. to load, I got creative and made 3 home videos) http://stackmates.blogspot.com/p/features.html Odd to me as a marketing manager not to make an e-commerce website before anything, I'd do that first. But their model is make product -> create automated voice order system (which is live now at 1.800.713.9928) -> test market on TV -> If promising, create website and continuing advertising. If not, leave me in the dust (with hopefully a little pat on the back for my ego ;) It does appear that the initial airing of the commercial this weekend passed their first tests (at least enough that they'll proceed to build the website--so I'll let you know when the website goes live). um, ok, just went live today 5.18 at: http://www.buystackmates.com Anyway making and launching the infomercial was the first battle and it came out great. But no money or success happens until the commercial brings in the break even numbers they're seeking... so if you should see STACK MATES on TV, or are interested, please order via the 1.800 or it will never make it to a retail stores. I created a little fun EN forum too, so you can give me thoughts/ideas/ask questions...the blogs are so one sided... http://www.edisonnation.com/forums/just-for-fun/topics/introducing-the-stackmates-storage-system Enjoy the blog, the movies and commercial, I'm going to go continue to having my heart attack and holding my breath!!!!!
Just for my EN friends...
May 12, 2010
All, I so appreciatie so many of you (you know who you are), who took time out of your own personal lives to answer my questions, respond to threads, give me advice and cheer me on or lift me up after dreaded red x's--so I wanted to pass on my personal experience in developing StackMates for others to learn and get some inside information. So this is not a public link off my stackmates blog, I just created for you guys... here's how it all went down 'for me'. In summary: An idea. Initiative. LUCK times 3. Passion. Dedication. Hope. A dream realized. I couldn't wait to launch my product but I truly also couldn't wait to share it with you all!! Cheers to a wondeful inventor community.

They are testing the best offer yet, next week (around 9.9.10), so keep eyes out for the commercial. And if you did want to order please do so next week.
The offer is great. In the past they tried 5 containers for $10 and also 10 containers for $20.
But next week they are testing this offer:
$19.95 - Buy One Get One Free 20 piece set of Stackmates plus 7.95 s/h
*2nd 20 piece set of Stackmates is Free, just pay an extra $7.95 to cover the additional s/h
So I'll do the math for you, you can get 20 containers for about $35. The offer is already on the website if you want to check it out:

I also updated my blog and added a bunch new photos that my friend took, hope you like them, if so please tell a few friends next week--orders to the website do get factored into the test numbers. Thanks guys for your support.

This is like holding a lottery ticket with 5 numbers and someone keeps telling me next month will tell you if you have the right 6th number... Keep you posted as always.
24 TV Test Countdown..
September 12, 2010
Stack Mates, get yourrrr Stack Mates herrrreeeee..... http://www.buyStackMates.com Maybe I can outsource the football concession guys to walk up and down the stadium aisles offering Stack Mates? 24 hours of TV testing left. W.W.Y.D.? "What Would You Do..to spread the word?" Have an idea, tell me, I'm a shameless promoter at this juncture... Anyway let you know how it turns out and next steps. Preparing for all possibilities. A post to your facebook, linked in wall or twitter account with the URL (http://www.buyStackMates.com) today is much appreciated!! Thanks guys. PS Just read Kevin Harrington's book 'ACT NOW', highly suggest...it gives you the total picture of the inventing business from his story. Did you know he started the ERA? Not really a teaching tool on the invention process but rather a great overview and story of all to expect in the DRTV business. Really good--easy read -- two days by the pool over labor day weekend did it. Very much enjoyed and learned from as well...prefect read for any inventor... oh yeah......stack mates :)) I'm like gnat. And I think I'm ok with that right now...
Inventing Resources
September 13, 2010
In my journey so far, I will tell you some of the most valuable resources I've come across to date: 1. 'Turn your idea or inventions into millions', a book by Don Kracke...you can get on Amazon used for $6. Recommended to me by another EN community member, this out of everything I've read so far will give you a complete picture of the entire business of inventing/licensing and manufacture. Teaching you about the important factors of distribution and the economics of it all. Don't worry it's not too heavy....Don 's writing style is very funny and entertaining. 2. NOLO! Nolo.com if you want the nitty gritty...learn how to write your own PPA, all about patents, the ins and outs of trademarks, drafting a license agreement... If you read 3 or 4 Nolo books I can tell you that you'll be able to speak the lingo and save yourself money in the long run (what to ask to your patent attorney, business lawyer, etc.). 3. Got Invention Radio (gotinventionradio.com) every Thursday night at 8pm you can listen to this radio show by Brian Fried --Brian started out very much like the rest of us and is really on the side of the independent inventor. All different resources are on the show...everyone including AJ, to K. Harrington to Mark Reyland has been on the show (Mark by the way is the Exec. Director of the UIA which brings me to #4...) If I miss a show, I download it to my iPod, and multitask by walking the dog and learning about the inventing industry. I also bought some licensing CD's and listen to them on the way to and from work... 4. Associate with others with your like interests. Joining the united inventors association (uiausa.org) , a local inventor club, groups like the ERA or using linkedin to join inventor groups will help you to understand all of the resources and support channels available to you. There is no local inventor group in my area...so I plan to join the UIA shortly and then will report more. 5. Do it! Take your best EN idea / idea and even if you don't have the money to apply for a PPA or PATENT now, pretend, walk through all the steps you would need to take to get your idea to market or licensed. What are those steps? Go back to point #1, #2, #3, or #4 .... any of those resources will quickly have you understand all that is involved. 6. Keep your cool. Stay professional. Support each other. After all it's the idea business, not the idea lottery (to paraphrase a friend). And remember to be careful what you post and how you present yourself if you are serious about entering this industry...as Roger Brown once said, "you never know who will one day read an EN message board post".. (and did you know that google indexes these conversations?)... So thanks all for your continued support it goes a long way and I want to pay-it-forward by trying to share what I learn along the way. PS Regarding promotional activities--think about crafting and sending a news release, there are free 30 day services you can use or permanent releases for about $199. Out of all my online efforts to date I found that the press release sent out really helped gain some traction in search engines. Good luck all.
In a boat, with a goat, near a moat...
September 29, 2010
I'm laughing out loud right now... So with my product Stack Mates I receive google alerts, any time the word StackMates or Stack Mates comes across a search engine, goolge sends me an email. This is easy to set-up, go to google.com (hit 'more', click 'alerts'). Handy Hint: Type in your competitor's keywords and then you can keep tabs on your competitor's marketing as well...or get alerts on your name. Anyway.... Last month, I paid to be part of a Product-N-Press event in NYC. Which was great, it was a pleasure to meet Louis Foreman, Brian Fried, and others associated with the inventor community but it also allowed for some great exposure to the press. Today, from a google alert, I came across a press "pick-up" ...my first little piece of PR for Stack Mates. So why am I laughing out loud? I just love the ending of my impromptu elevator pitch (....in a boat) it strikes me very funny... Stack Mates, in a boat, with a goat, near a moat :)) I'll be working on the 30-second elevator pitch a bit for sure... http://video.aol.ca/video-detail/2010-0924-27m-stackmates-800-h264/3162160180
or those who follow their passion for inventing...
October 06, 2010
This is it! Visited the DRTV Marketing firm of Stack Mates this past weekend. Meeting went well. In a nutshell it all comes down to this test. Stack Mates testing this week/weekend. By end of next week they decide if they will proceed to a "retail roll-out" or if we will part ways/end contract. In that case it would be Plan B. Plan B sounds exhausting so still hoping for Plan A. At least the wait will be over. Licensing (just like EN contests) are definitely risk averse (no large financial captial investment required).... However, it really requires patience! As a self-starter I do find it difficult to have someone else calling the shots, deciding on the final commercial, the ad buys, the decisions to invest or pull-back.... But I guess if it worked [redirect when it works] it would be the best decision. For now I wait patiently (ok maybe not patiently--I wait leaning on my social media sites...texting Stack Mates to twitter/linkedin/facebook/my blog) and hope that the energy I put out into the universe can help to pull it through. Found this quote today and thought it was great. I could also substitute the last line to read: "...for those who follow their passion for inventing, time is eternity :)))" "Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity." -- Henry Van Dyke PS I've updated new promotions/Stack Mates updates on my personal blog, outside of EN, at: http://stackmates.blogspot.com
Looking for .........?
