Stages of Evaluation

  • Stage 1

    Submission Received
Congratulations! Your idea has been successfully submitted into our secure system. Now we get to work.

  • Stage 2

    Pre-Screen
In this stage, the first thing we do is prescreen your idea to make sure it meets the minimum requirements of the search.

  • Stage 3

    Initial Review
Your idea fits the search criteria!

In this stage, we perform an initial review to find other products and patents that may be similar to your idea.

  • Stage 4

    Research
Now that we know the potential competitors, the research begins.

In this stage, we dive further into your idea to confirm that it is better than anything else already on the market. We also look to make sure it has mass market appeal and offers a fresh and innovative solution that will really resonate with consumers.

  • Stage 5

    Final Consideration
We've now determined your idea can hold its own against existing products and will appeal to a mass market.

In this stage, we evaluate market potential, price point, match for the search sponsor and any other requirements defined in the search description.

  • Stage 6

    Final Intellectual Property Review
You've made it to the final intellectual property review!

In this stage, we perform an in-depth analysis of competing intellectual property, patents and ideas in the public domain. If your idea has a patent or patent application filed, we review the patent or application and confirm its status. If your idea does not have IP filed, we compare it to published patents and patent applications to determine whether it meets patent requirements.

  • Stage 7

    Finalists
Your idea has passed through six stages of review and you are now a finalist!

In this stage, we take a look at the IP review results to confirm your idea offers the level of protection the sponsor requires to bring it to market. Success at this stage means your idea will be presented to the search partner for consideration!

  • Stage 8

    Success
    Congratulations! You've made it!

Reaching Stage 8 means your idea has been selected by a search partner for a licensing deal!

We will contact you directly with more details soon!

  • Your idea was not selected
If you see a Red X at any stage, that means your idea doesn't meet the requirements to move on to the next stage. Learning more about each stage of the review process is the best way to understand our team's rationale. A note on timing:

  • Evaluation Begins: As ideas come into our system, evaluation begins within 24-48 business hours. From here, the further along in the process that your idea progresses, the more time it can take.
  • Search Closes: After the close of a sponsored search, Edison Nation and the sponsor schedule the presentation date, which is typically 3 to 4 weeks after the close of the search. Once scheduled, you'll find the date updated on your dashboard. Treat this date like gold.
  • Due Diligence: Following the presentation, sponsors choose the innovations that they want to do further due diligence on, and those innovations that they do not want to consider further. These decisions are made within 4 to 6 weeks after the presentation.
  • Results: Dashboards of the ideas that the sponsor does not want to consider further will be updated, and Insider members will receive feedback as to why. For those being considered further, Edison Nation will reach out with any additional information or material requests.

  • Stage 5

    Final Consideration
We've now determined your idea can hold its own against existing products and will appeal to a mass market.

In this stage, we begin considering what companies we think would be good potential licensing fits for your idea, and begin thinking about their market, competition, price points and more.

  • Stage 6

    Final Intellectual Property Review
You've made it to the final intellectual property review!

A note on timing:

  • Evaluation Begins: As ideas come into our system, evaluation begins within 24-48 business hours. From here, the further along in the process that your idea progresses, the more time it can take.
  • Research: Edison Nation has a diverse network of companies seeking innovation. It's often a matter of pinpointing the right fit for your product. The timing varies case-by-case, and can take more or less time depending on the nature of the market your product is being licensed to.
  • Potential Matches: In general, once we've found potential matches, your idea enters into the Stage 7 of the process, which triggers the exclusivity period. From here, we have 6 months to make a deal happen, and if we don't, we can either continue pitching or release the option to your IP back to you.
  • Stage 1

    Initial Evaluation
In this stage we evaluate your submission to determine if it has ASOTV potential.

Key factors for TV potential are demonstrability, strong problem/solution, a “WOW” factor, and ease of manufacturing.

  • Stage 2

    Vote
Your idea is now being presented to multiple industry experts for a vote that will determine if it will proceed to our secure survey platform.

These voting decisions are based on our expert's years of experience combined with current market data and trend research.

  • Stage 3

    Survey
Our Survey platform is a small, secure focus group conducted to gauge market interest and gain consumer feedback in a quantitative way.

First, we take time to prep your idea to make it very clear and presentable for our survey takers, who will review your idea in the form of a one-page 'sell-sheet'.

After prep work is complete it will run through our survey system, then, our team gathers to talk about the results before making a final decision to move on to the next stage, “Web Test”.

We may re-survey an idea with modifications as we learn new things from survey takers. For this reason, you may stay in this phase for quite a while.

  • Stage 4

    Web Test
After a successful survey result, we organize and launch a specialized website that typically includes a short video pitching your product to potential customer.

This means our Industrial Designers and Engineers will be turning renderings and images into actual working prototypes, taking into account the valuable feedback from the prior survey stage.

Our filming crew will then shoot a video, meanwhile our marketing and graphics team will build out the website.

Your completed testing website is deployed through a secure platform that allows us to gather data from across the nation. This data allows us to understand the level of purchase intent on a much broader level as compared to the survey.

We will use this information to determine if the product will be profitable on TV (sometimes this is skipped based on certainty of survey results).

  • Stage 5

    TV Test
Time to make a commercial! Now, the product is branded, storyboarded and scripted by our production team in preparation to make it come alive on screen.

At the same time, design and engineers will finely tune the look and function of the item. They will also get it ready for manufacturing with sourcing efforts and specification drawings. It's not just a prototype anymore!

This is also the stage where final naming, trademarking, and securing of patents occurs.

After final filming and editing wraps, your product is officially airing to the masses on TV, and we'll soon know if it's a hit or not. Our media strategists and marketing team work together to develop a nationwide testing plan specifically tuned to the product's target audience.

As it airs over several weeks, the team analyzes data to decide whether or not the product will be profitable. Just like with surveys and webtests, we sometimes modify the TV spot and re-test as we learn things along the way so, be patient!

  • Stage 6

    Launch
This is the “final” phase + ultimate goal!

Making it to this phase means the data gathered from the prior TV test reached all of the right benchmarks to justify an expanded TV campaign AND retail roll-out (meaning your product will be sold in the ASOTV section of a store near you)!

Congratulations! We'll be in direct contact with you about all of the details.

A note on timing:

  • Initial Evaluation: The Initial Evaluation can take anywhere between 4 to 8 weeks.
  • Vote: A select number of ideas are voted upon every single week. The amount of time that your idea is in the “vote” stage depends on how many other ideas are in the queue at the same time.
  • Survey: Once your idea gets a “yes” vote and reaches the Survey phase, it will be prepped and surveyed within about 4 to 6 weeks and may be re-surveyed based on new information we gather.
  • Web Test: Once your idea reaches the Web Test phase, it will be prepared and deployed within about 3-5 months. This may be shorter or longer depending on how many other items are web testing at the same time, and how much development needs to happen in order to fabricate a working prototype.
  • TV Test: Once your idea reaches the TV Test list, you can expect to see it on TV within about 6-9 months. This time is necessary to fabricate multiple camera-ready samples, gather and edit footage, and secure media spots.
  • Launch: Launching an item into retail stores has many factors and varies widely depending on the product. We will be in direct contact with you about timeframes at this point.
  • Stage 1

    Preliminary Review
Our team will perform a preliminary review to ensure your invention meets the program criteria. Factors that might keep your idea from moving forward include: your invention is too cost-prohibitive, has engineering challenges and/or major players in the marketplace have already launched products similar to yours.

If none of these apply, your idea will be approved and move on to the preparation phase.

  • Stage 2

    Preparation
At this time, we perform a best partner review. We take inventory of our retail and manufacturing contacts and begin to map out just who should learn more about your idea.

We conduct a gap analysis and visit the store shelves to understand the market and to get an understanding as to where your idea fits.

  • Stage 3

    Pitching
At this phase, your idea is now a “Finalist” and our team begins to proactively pitch your idea. The team is on the phone, on email and using our proprietary presentation system to get the attention of the industry's best.

When a company expresses interest, we move into term sheets and negotiations. We stay in constant contact with the prospect until we negotiate the best possible deal for you.

  • Stage 4

    Outcome
In the end, the market decides what products will be successful. There are no guarantees. When the deal is signed, you'll be the first to know! If for some reason we are not successful in finding a licensing partner, we'll let you know why. What we can guarantee is that we're working hard for you and appreciate your trust and patience.

  • Preparation: In this stage, timing varies case-by-case and can take more or less time depending on the product and nature of the market it is being licensed to.
  • Pitching: When your product enters the Pitching stage, the exclusivity period is triggered. From here, we have 6 months to make a deal happen, and if we don't, we can either continue pitching or release the option to your IP back to you.
