Barry - We have licensed several products with them in the past. Unfortunately several years ago there were major team/management changes at Dorman that ended the path of the concepts, as new team members had different priorities, etc. BUT we have maintained contact with them, and the team that came in was very respectful of the innovations that had been licensed and had given them very honest consideration. One of the two products we had licensed was actually the ONLY pending innovation that new team kept working on from prior team.

Barry:

I just looked at Dorman's website and they currently only accept unsolicited new product ideas under a "contest" format with a $500 prize and they state that submitters agree:

[they are] under no obligation to compensate me for my submission, if compensation is to be made, under no circumstances will the payment exceed $5,000 (USD).

Unless you have a "throwaway" type idea or are motivated to give up your ideas for the chance to win $500 I wouldn't attempt submitting to them directly.

Seeing this kind of thing makes me so grateful to have EN in my corner when approaching companies. $500 is not nothing, but for the kinds of ideas I develop in the vast majority of cases I'm hoping for a license, not a nominal one-time prize.

Good luck Barry!

I'm curious about how you will choose to proceed. If it were me, I'd submit my automotive invention to EN's "All Category" search, especially since it sounds like EN's licensing team already has a live contact with Dorman.

I have a couple of inventions I'm preparing to submit to the "All Category" search (or maybe the Insider Licensing Program if I get a provisional patent). Those inventions aren't appropriate for any of the current sponsored searches but I'm sure EN has contacts with suitable potential licensees amongst their network of contacts.

One more thing, on the off-chance this is relevant for you. A while ago, EN had a sponsored search with HandStands - maker of car air fresheners. They were apparently since acquired by Energizer :
