I have a question re: the dashboard on the LPS’s. Is there a reason why one dash would have a check mark and the other wouldn’t?

i.e. my G7 WPH broad has a green check mark & my ASOTV G2 has a green circle.

Okay, I finally submitted our idea after having been season 3 finalists but I do not understand the “dashboard” we are currently on #3 but if it just to stay in your database, won’t it just stay at 3? I certainly hope another fabric company submits a live product search but hey, right now, the economy is a bit sluggish (being kind)- but here is a question? What if a company actually contacts us first, can we send them to you to possibly get us a license? Thanks for your input

Sorry about this, one more question: about season 2 and the people who are chosen to be shown on the “trailers” of the season two -are these usually people who did not get picked for the show? (I got really excited when I saw Diane and I with our product after watching season 2)! We thought we had made it to season 3!!! (oh well) who are the other 3 on the trailers, can you let us know?

Hi LLL,

I still do not have a firm Spirit Halloween presentation date. Unfortunately the pre-holiday date we were working toward will not work for their team. We are trying to schedule the presentation for early January. I’ll keep you posted.

Bridget, I forwarded your dashboard question to the web team. They should post an answer in this thread.

Next LPS…There are a number of searches that are about to launch, but I’m reluctant to announce names until all the details are finalized. I hope to make an announcement on Monday. Stay tuned!!!!

Kevin, there is never a guarantee that a submission will be selected for a search, but with all the great submissions we are receiving, I would be very surprised if we didn’t have a number of selections.

LLL, I’m not sure I understand your question about the dashboard for a “regular” submission. I think you want to know what happens when you submit an idea for the database that is not applicable to a specific search. In this case, the submission will be rejected for the search since it isn’t a fit. It then resides in the database to be queried for future searches. You can also opt it into future searches. All submissions that or opted into a search begin that search on level 3.

LLL, with regards to your question about a company contacting your directly…if something like this happens, please email me directly.

LLL, I’m not sure which trailers you’re referring to but I imagine that you a seeing crowd shots or “man in the street” interviews from casting calls. I’m sure some of those clips will make it on the show, but I’m not sure which ones. Ask Daniel Cordero in his thread here, http://www.edisonnation.com/forums/18/topics/970

I believe I’ve addressed all the open questions. I’ll be announcing more good news over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!!!!

Bridget,
Each dashboard should have either one green check (or red x) signifying the highest stage that you have currently attained. We use a check rather than just red/green circles for that last step so that somebody with red/green color blindness can easily read the dashboard as well.

Are you saying that one of your dashboards does not have any sort of a check (or x) or that your dashboard only has one check per line?

If there’s no check or x, you’ve found a bug that we need to fix. From what you’ve said, it sounds like it’s possible that G2 is displaying a green dot rather than a check when that’s the highest level you’ve currently attained.

Hi John….after looking over the new Christmas Tree Shops LPS and checking out their website, I have a few questions….when they make their selections from the finalists, I’m assuming it would be an exclusive product for them, correct? Will that exclusive product be merchandized in their Bed, Bath and Beyond stores, as well as, the 40+ Christmas Tree Shops stores?

Also, in the LPS write-up it asks if the product can be placed on the tree or under it. I just want to make sure that outdoor decor is acceptable, as well.

Thanks for your help,

Ha! I’m laughing because my very first post was a post between Toni and I where I was asking this same question – at least I thought I was! I think now that Toni must have thought that I was asking if I could submit two different ideas. lol. Well, regardless Toni, I took your advice and entered the same idea to two different searches. They have not had any effect on one another, yet! I’m assuming that when I go GREEN 8 ;~) on WPH Broad this week that they’ll take the idea out of the ASOTV search but, in the meantime, I’m holding steady at G4 on that one. The nice news is, it expedites the progress on the dashboard! Having passed G3 on WPH, my idea went directly to G3 on ASOTV.

You don’t have to pay additional to submit to the same search. My philosophy is the more chances the better!

Celeste, I think Bridget covered your question pretty well. Submit to one search and then select “Submit an Existing Idea” for the second search. You only have to pay for the first search. As a matter of fact, I’m sure we’ll be holding another online Everyday Edisons casting call next year which means you’ll already have your idea in the LPS database and will be able to easily submit it at no additional cost to the EE online casting call.

the beauty of the database is that you don’t HAVE to re-submit and idea to another search. It automatically is considered. Re-submitting just gives you a dashboard so that you can monitor it’s progress. Am I right Matt & John M.?

Good question Cheryl.

While we’re on the topic…
If you DO submit the same idea to two different searches, how does one effect the other?

i.e. if you reach G7 status on search 1 – is your idea “frozen” on search 2 until decisions are made on search 1?

If timing is comparable, do they both continue to progress?

Cheryl: I hope you’re right. While my WP Home was at G7 I didn’t think to submit it to the ASOTV since the retailer had it under consideration. Now that I’ve been nixed on R8, I wish I would have opted it into the ASOTV as well.

I went ahead and entered my WPH G7 into the ASOTV search before it ended. It is sitting at G3 waiting to go back through the evaluations as an infomercial product. The dashboards moved independently of each other. I also submitted my BYB ideas to the ASOTV search. It was all kind of an experiment to see how they would progress in two different searches.

I’ve been kind of curious how they will evaluate them, though, since the questions are different for each search. so, my WPH G7 submission has questions that related to that search and now that I’ve submitted it to ASOTV, it has questions for that search that haven’t been answered. I was kind of expecting the new questions to pop up when I submitted it to the new search.

Yeah, same thing here – that would actually be a good point to bring up with EN.

I submitted two ideas to ASOTV – my original idea went through the WPH application, my second through the ASOTV application. The questions re: continuity and upsales didn’t get answered for my first submission.

My personal opinion is that EN’s product developers know the answers to the questions they ask up front on the submission form as soon as they look at our ‘idea’. They are after all product developers. I think they ask the questions up front more for our edification than theirs. Plus, they like to give us every opportunity to ‘pitch’ our ideas to them so that we feel good about our presentation or at least so we know that they gave ample opportunity to give it our best shot.

My opinion only.

Lots of good questions out there. Let’s see if I can address them all.

Brenda, The dashboard with no deadline is indeed a result of submitting with the casting call coupon. The web team is aware and will be removing that dashboard shortly. Your submission will remain in the database. You will still be able to opt in, opt out and edit.

Joaco, Ditto what Matt said. Live Product Search will not disqualify you from next season’s casting calls.

Cheryl, You’re right! You do not need to opt in to a new search for the idea to be considered. We query the database for each search, looking for submissions that might fit. By opting in, you see the submission’s evaluation progress and you ensure that the submission is not missed by the query.

Bridget, When a submission is opted in to multiple search simultaneously, it is evaluated separately and independently for each search. There is no relationship between the two searches.

Carol, Same response as to Cheryl above.

Susan, Great question! A grey opt out button means that the submission was moved to finalist on at least one search sometime within the last six months. I wouldn’t assume anything regarding the submission. If you have a particular question or concern about the submission, please email me directly.

Kurt & Becky, Interesting comment. We are working on a change to the opt in process that would force you to answer the unique questions in the new search, just as you suggested. Currently, we fill in a lot of the blanks ourselves and occasionally contact the inventor for more information or clarification.

I want to clarify something about opting in & opting out. If you have a checkmark on the finalist stage, then you are locked up for up to six months or until the submission is rejected. The “Marking Pro” one has been stuck at G2 with just a green circle no check for days. When I submitted that one to the new search it jumped to G3 with a check. Is there something wrong with how it’s showing up on the ASOTV search or is it just that much better of a fit for The Christmas Tree shops?

John,

Since database ideas are queried and you don’t have to opt in to other searches for ideas to be considered, can an idea be considered for a search whose submission deadline has passed?

For instance, let’s say I have an idea for the Christmas Tree Shoppes that would be a good fit for ASOTV. Although the deadline has passed for submitting to ASOTV, would EN consider the idea for ASOTV since it would be in the database and the final decisions haven’t been made for that search yet? Or would the idea be out of play for searches whose submissions deadlines have passed (but no final decisions have been made)?

Great question Margaret!!!
My guess would be that EN [simply by virture of being a for profit business] would never pass up a really great idea that is aperfect fit for one of their searches just because the idea was not submitted to that specific search. Although I am not certain of whether or not there are legal ramifications involved with the “contest” format of these searches which would limit them. We will have to wait for Matt or John to answer.

Margaret,
Excellent question! As a general rule, a submission made after the close of a contest will not be picked up by the query for that contest, but it depends on the timing. If you think your submission should be considered for a search whose deadline has passed, your best option is to send me an email to remove any uncertainty. As Cheryl pointed out, we don’t want to pass up an opportunity to review a great idea. I will let you know if it is too late to include it.

Hi Jansen, welcome to the LPS club. You’re too late for the ASOTV search, it’s already closed. John Meacham had said that you could email him to see if the idea can be considered for ASOTV, since it’s an idea that is in the database before any decisions have been made for that search. He said he can’t guarantee that it will be considered though. I guess it depends how far along in the process for the ASOTV they are. If they did allow the idea to be considered for ASOTV, you wouldn’t be charged another $25 because you would have already paid the $25 for the HS search. My understanding is that ideas already in the database from previous searches are reviewed by EN for each new search, but if you want to make sure it will be considered for a specific search, you should actually enter it. Hope that helps.

Susan’s query about the automatic G3 status. I submitted mine today for HS and decided to submit it to CTS and got an automatic G3 status on CTS. Hi John, can you shed some light on this. Are we allowed to submit two ideas on two LPS on the same day albeit free for one of the LPS?

posted    Report this post
cheryl's Avatar

Lorena,
I am not John, but I can answer this question. Yes we are allowed to submit the same idea into two [or more]LPS’s on the same day [or any day the LPS is active.]
When you submit an existing idea to an LPS your dashboard will automatically advance to G3, but don’t get too excited, it will likely sit at G3 for some time. This is how EN has set up the system, partially at our [forum posters] request I might add. We asked them if a re-submitted idea had to begin all over again at G1 when it had already passed those stages in a previous search. When this all began don’t forget there was only ONE active LPS, now that the LPS’s are overlapping the dashboards will need to ‘catch up’ with one another. Also, don’t forget, you could get and R4 on the same entry that you could get a G7 on in the next LPS.

Just want to throw this question to anybody. If a product has been succesfully licensed to a sponsoring company in an LPS, is that an exclusive licence or can EN licence the product to another company once a provisional patent has been issued. Related to this query, are the LPS the only venue where our product submissions will be exposed to companies out there? Being a newbie at this community, just wondering. Thanks guys for continually giving me your replies.

Just one more question if you all don’t mind. Do we have a hand in branding our products if they were sucessfully chosen; or, do we have to apply for a trademark for this. I am sure everybody has pet names for their brainchilds (or brainchildren haha not sure of the plural form)and just like seeing the product itself on store shelves, we wish to see the pet name we have given to our product on the packaging. It’s just the geek in me talking here people haha, just pardon my naiveness.

Ok guys and gals, thanks for your patience. Here are my responses to your questions, oldest to newest:

Jansen – Yes, once you submit an idea to LPS, you can edit most of the content and upload additional media. (Lindy answered your question correctly. Thanks, Lindy!)

Richard – I’m flattered, but it’s Matt’s call whether or not to lock a thread to the top of the forum.

Shawn – Mike is correct. Your Hammacher Schlemmer submission does not need to be patented. Thanks Mike!

Jansen – The ASOTV LPS is closed, but you will have opportunities to opt in your submission to new searches. Thank you Mike & Margaret for responding!

Susan – When you opt in to a new search, your submission jumps ahead to G3 automatically. Your item cannot be selected be selected for more than one search. Selection means that your idea is licensed to the search sponsor.

Jansen – Yes, it’s fine to submit to one search and opt in to a second search on the same day. G3 is automatic any time you opt in to a search.

Cheryl – Bravo! Thank you for your crystal clear explanation to Jansen’s question regarding opting in and G3 status. Also, I don’t have a date yet for the BYB presentation. I’ll keep you posted.

Jansen – As a general rule, our search sponsors exclusively license the selected submissions. Also yes, the LPS is currently the only venue where Edison Nation will evaluate product submissions.

Also, the inventor may or may not have a hand in naming and branding the end product, but most likely not. It is more common for the sponsor to take creative control of the licensed innovation.

Thanks John for all the answers to my previous questions. Another question, how does the annuity payment works? The way I understood it is that the only time we get any monetary reward for our submission (if chosen for commercialization) is when the product generated revenue already. Also, there would only be licensing and assignment annuities if the sponsor company licensed or assigned the rights to another company. What about brand annuity, how does this work? Thanks again.

John,

I’ve got a question for you. We upload our submissions and enter them into whichever search when we start. We then can submit them to other searches down the line. I get all of that but my question is about what you do. You too can search the database and consider an item for any search you want. If you decide something is a good fit even though we didn’t enter it in that search do you put it up on our Dashboard so we know it’s being considered, or send us an email or something telling us you are considering it?

Thanks

This post came from Cheryl under another topic and I though it would make more sense over here so I’ll answer it here. First her question:

Hi Matt,
I was wondering if you or Louis could provide us with some information on Edison Nation. I am writing my questions as a ‘rookie’ so that they may be understood by all, [hopefully.]

When Edison Nation is in the process of an LPS are the initial ‘reviewers’ of the ideas submitted via LPS the same ‘product developers’ that we see at live casting calls when we first present or are they a different group of people. I think that sometimes [at least in my case] the line between the two/three companies; being- Enventys’ Everyday Edison’s and Edison Nation. Does everyone work for Enventys’? Is there ‘overlap’?

For an LPS is stage five similar to the ‘battle’ at the triangle table on Everyday Edison, are they the same people? Is the R&D team the same people we have seen on Everyday Edison’s or are they different people working in a different capacity than those we see on the PBS program.

Finally, can you provide us with some ‘demographic’ information regarding the ‘Team’ involved in the LPS process; average age, gender ratio, areas of specialty, years of experience in field, etc.?

Thanks!

The Edison Nation LPS review teams differ for each search with a core of reviewers that look at all of them (John is one of the core team). There are always members of Edison Nation and members of Enventys (the product development team behind Everyday Edisons) in those panels. This is a subset of the team that you see on the Everyday Edisons “roundtable review” episodes. And yes, you could say that stage 5 (and stage 7) is very similar to those reviews on Everyday Edisons.

I don’t have a breakdown of demographics for our team other than they’re all over the board on just about every demographic you could come up with. There are many decades of product development expertise – in all sorts of industries – behind those responsible for reviewing Live Product Search results.

Hope that helps!

- Matt

Hi John or Matt,

We have a question about the licensing of a product through an LPS. Does the company that sponsors the search have the ability to sub-license (or whatever the term would be) to other manufacturers or distributors? And if they do, do they have an obligation to do that?

This question comes up for us each time a new LPS is announced. For instance, the Christmas Trees Shop LPS. They only have 40 stores in one section of the US. This seems very limiting if we have a product with very broad market appeal. On the surface it seems like we would be limiting the success of our product. Are we wrong with this thinking? What happens to our product once a company signs a licensing contract? Is it limited to distribution only within that company?

Thanks for helping us understand this. (Yes, we have read the contract and are still confused)

Hello Everyone! I’m sure a lot of you know me already, and I’m going to try and answer your questions to the best of my ability. First the easy ones:

Phil- I am going to refer you to an answer John gave to this question previously:
“You do not need to opt in to a new search for the idea to be considered. We query the database for each search, looking for submissions that might fit. By opting in, you see the submission’s evaluation progress and you ensure that the submission is not missed by the query.”

Dean-There are in fact multiple ASOTV representatives that are involved in the search, so yes we will be having several presentations, which is great because there will be more of an opportunity for the finalists.

Mike G, Erin, and Michael Dufresne- We realize that there has been a delay with the BYB presentation. John is presently working on setting up that presentation and we hope to have something scheduled over the next few weeks. BYB is in town so there will be no issues with traveling and that will make the meeting easier to schedule.

Joaco, Kurt & Becky, and Jansen- I am working on getting detailed answers to your questions so bear with me and I will hopefully have something for you by the end of the day.

For those of you whose questions I answered, let me know if that is sufficient or if there is anything that is still unclear. Thanks!

I went through the entire submission process including a sizeable demo video, but was stopped short at the end by the Exhibit A Live Product Search Assignment Agreement. Hi Jim, Welcome to EN. As I understand the
process, you enter the contest and if you are
picked up as a finalist and offered a licensing
deal you give them your IP in return for the
Licensing contract. Then you go on and invent
a new product and submit that one too. :))

posted    Report this post
mginjhw's Avatarg8_badge

I’m not a lawyer, Jim, but the basics is that you have to agree to the contract and to assigning the rights, otherwise EN cannot contract with the company doing the search. Unless they can do that, there is no point in them working and presenting your idea.

posted    Report this post
jrodney's Avatar

Thanks everyone for the replies. Mike, I understand about entering into a contract with EN such that they’re free to seek out & forge potential licensing deals, but this is the first instance I’ve come upon asking me to sign over IP rights up front before any license brokering is even started or any agreements signed. I’ve worked with some other companies & licensing professionals & none of them required the IP rights or even powers of attorney. I’m going to need to seek the counsel of a legal friend on this – not sure I can be comfortable with that arrangement.

Jim, there are actually two contracts, one lays out the agreement of the search, and by signing it you agree to sign the second contract if your product is selected.

If that still doesn’t work for you, I would email it to Matt or John in an attachment. (just look them up in the people & groups section and there will be a link for email). Oh, and they won’t charge you to add media to your idea.

I’m back! Sorry I was out of the office on Friday afternoon so I missed all of the activity. Let me see if I can address everyone:

Holly and Lawrence- I am unfortunately unable to give you an answer regarding when you will hear about the selections made from the WPH searches. We are aware that there has been a delay in releasing the results from the search, but as soon as we find out the Edison Nation community will be the first to know.

Michael- We are in fact working on the BYB submissions and we’re in the process of scheduling the presentation which could be as early as this week. I would expect to see more movement on dashboards soon.

Dean- We will give multiple presentations for the ASOTV search. This search is unique in that we have more than one presentation, so there isn’t a concrete time line because of that. I would venture to say that we would have all of the presentations complete before the end of this month.

Jansen- It doesn’t look like anyone addressed your question so I’ll go ahead and answer it. In the past it has not taken our sponsors six months to make their selections. Outside of the Westpoint Home searches we have had a fairly quick turnaround- usually we’ll know a little over a month after we initially present ideas to a retailer/manufacturer.

Rafael- Don’t fret…there are several LPS’s on the docket that will be announced very soon!

Rita- The contract has evolved and at this point it more inventor friendly. You can opt out at any point in the process until you are green at the finalist stage. When and if you go to red at the finalist stage you may opt out then. Does that make sense?

You had the right idea by describing your visions of the final product in your submission. Usually we do not contact inventors so early on in the process unless we have questions. Does this make sense?
