NEW SEARCH! Church & Dwight is looking for innovative simple and easy solutions to clean and freshen previously worn clothes between washings!

magurn's Avataren_staff_badge

Church & Dwight is a leader in Household and Personal Care Products with brands such as ARM & HAMMER™, OxiClean™, Orajel™, waterpik™ and more.

THEIR SUCCESS HAS BEEN DRIVEN BY AN ONGOING COMMITMENT TO INTRODUCING INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS DESIGNED TO SATISFY UNMET NEEDS WITH EFFECTIVE CONSUMER-CENTRIC SOLUTIONS.

TWO ADDITIONAL possible scenarios that your idea(s) could help solve:

Scenario #1:

You’ve just come home from work and are planning a quick turnaround to meet up with friends for dinner. When you look in the closet or drawers, you realize that your favorite “go to” outfit has already been worn, but it’s not so dirty and worn that it needs to be washed.

  • What are some fast, innovative, convenient, minimal effort solutions (other than applying a refresher spray or tossing the clothes into the dryer) that could provide acceptable cleaning and freshening, so you could feel good about wearing the clothes without having to worry about their appearance or smell?

Scenario #2:

You love the way your jeans look and feel even after wearing them a few times between washings. As a matter of fact, you try to avoid sending them through the wash as long as you can because of the extra wear and tear it puts on the jeans. Plus, it takes a while to get the comfy-ness back to where you like it. However, there comes a point when you’re concerned that dirt, stains and/or odors might be too much.

  • What are some innovative, convenient, minimal efforts solutions (other than applying a refresher spray or tossing the clothes into the dryer) that you could use to do to keep or make jeans cleaner and fresher between washings so they can go even longer before having to send them through the wash?

Question for Chruch & Dwight:  Which category has the greatest need for innovation from an IP and sales standpoint?  Conversely, which category is strongest from an IP and sales standpoint?

Perhaps C&D could go so far as to take all of the categories in the search, and rank them in order from greatest need for innovation to the least.  This would be a helpful guide.

Hi Katrina!

The number of ideas per search varies depending on the type of search and what is being asked. For searches that are a bit more niche, the totals are lower, but that doesn't mean the ideas aren't good.

In our Balloon Time search that just closed, for example, we did not have a ton of submissions, but those we did receive were great and many are going to presentation (stay tuned in that thread for updates).

Good morning to all! We've received responses from the Church & Dwight team on your questions! Please see the Q&As below! (Side note: due to the amount of text, these updates are spread across several posts - be sure to scroll to get the info!

Questions from Innovator Community:

Q: Ideally would products/devices use an existing Church and Dwight-made consumable (such as Arm & Hammer baking soda)? (as opposed to a brand new kind of consumable, or one not currently produced by Church & Dwight)

A. We would definitely have some additional interest in products that use existing consumables, especially iconic ones like baking soda. Having said that, the consumable does not have to be something that exists now. A new kind of consumable would definitely be of interest. However, creating actual formulas for the consumable is not a requirement at this time.

Q: Is there a high probability that Church & Dwight will use crowdfunding in the development of the finalist products or is that just one strategy they might employ?

A. The purpose of considering crowdfunding is not really about raising funds, but instead as a way to determine the strength of interest and potential of the new product(s).

Questions from the Innovator Community cont.:

Q: Which category has the greatest need for innovation from an IP and sales standpoint? Conversely, which category is strongest from an IP and sales standpoint?

Perhaps C&D could go so far as to take all of the categories in the search, and rank them in order from greatest need for innovation to the least. This would be a helpful guide.

A. Essentially, we’re attempting to create a new category that does not currently exist. This would be similar to what Swiffer did in household cleaning by offering people a fast and easy way to get floors acceptably clean between more heavy duty cleanings.

With regards to product functionality, whole garment cleaning and freshening are the most critical elements that should be provided.

Some statistics to note: Our estimates are that laundry detergents are ~$6B in annual sales, coin operated laundry is roughly ~$5B, and 3rd party laundry / dry cleaning services are roughly ~$9B annually

Q: Considering the statement in the search description:

Up to $50 for machines, devices, durable goods that would include a consumable item

Is it desirable to stay away from electronics?

A. Electronic devices are definitely under consideration. However, the $50 price point is intended to keep the devices/products affordable to mainstream consumer and consistent with Arm & Hammer’s heritage for always delivering great performance at a great value.

Questions from the Innovator Community - last post:

Q: Is Church & Dwight open to suggestions to use inside dresser drawers, hampers, etc.?

A. Yes. In addition to ideas that could work in places where clothes are currently being stored, we’re also open to storage options that could also help deliver cleaning and freshening during storage. We’re also open to ideas that might work in non-traditional, yet convenient places, such as bathrooms or dorm rooms.

We hope this additional information has helped inspire your next idea!

Good afternoon - Will be seeing additional movement on the C+D search as our team had a meeting with small group of C+D team at end of last week to go over some initial innovations that have moved through the review process, there were a total of 9 concepts that were discussed in detail last week, and some focus group studies are being done by C+D over next week to see reaction to "platform situations" that have been identified. The individual innovations are NOT being presented in the focus group, but their teams have formed Statements around the situations/solutions that they fit into.

Since that discussion last week there have also been a handful of other submissions that had been pending in the review process that have moved forward and are being discussed based upon additional thoughts that evolved from last weeks meeting.

Post the discussion with C+D we have begun to also process rejected submissions that fell into IP path problems, competitive landscape/infrongement issues, etc.

We hope to have the boards all updated later this week, and will update when additional feedback comes from C+D team.

Thanks for the update Scott.  Mostly everything is clear to me except for one thing.

The following statement:

"Post the discussion with C+D we have begun to also process rejected submissions that fell into IP path problems, competitive landscape/infrongement issues, etc."

almost leads one to believe that C+D saw all of the submissions, as opposed to just the G7's as per the normal process.  Otherwise there would be no need to wait for C+D's feedback for submissions that have not moved through the review process (i.e. have stalled at a particular review stage probably between G3 and G6).

Can you confirm or clarify whether or not C+D was involved in reviewing all concepts at all stages rather than just the G7 stage.

Best Regards.

sgdromms's Avataren_staff_badge

Derrick -

No, apologize if unclear. C+D saw 9 top concepts last week, and we had overall discussions about what other potential "platform situations" had been introduced during the submission process.

Essentially it is a version of a "heat map" essentially C+D wanting to see if major pain points/problem areas arose and we kept things alive "within the EN' system in case any of those conversations led to interest.

We had been asked to provide the heat map post the search, and in order to review that map with them, the vast majority of submissions were not rejected at various stages until after our discussion with them.

A great example would be, there is ALOT of IP within the space that involves hanging/hanger solutions and numerous submissions got caught up in the IP review...well it was important to document that to C+D, that YES, there were alot of people thinking about hanging solutions, and a vast majority of those fell into IP traps.

Ok, that makes sense.  Thanks for the clarification Scott.

That's great, thanks Scott.  It sounds like for those who haven't seen movement in the last week or so, that pretty much means you are outside of that "handful of concepts" under further review. Not trying to dwell on the negative just trying to face the reality.  On a more positive note, congratulations to the ones who have moved forward.

Jim -

Basically what I was referring to by Platform Situations (and others can/do/may use other terms/phrases) is when situational statements or situations are presented to end users, and determinations are made if a business can build a platform business around that statement. Does it resonate highly with the end user so that one can market that solution to the masses.

Sylvain - I have not looked at status of your specific submission, but as stated in my original post our teams have begun to also process rejected submissions. That is an on-going process this week.

@fred - thanks - my G3 morphed into a R4 this morning so now I'm down to one at G7...

The one that made it to G7 was the most fully developed of my 5 submissions, the others that were Red X'd I had barely sketched out. I always wonder if I had only had the time to more fully develop ideas if the outcome would have been different. I did get some excellent feedback that leads me to believe that even additional development would not have made a difference in most cases, but of course the reviewers can only judge on what is put before them. Sometimes I wish I could just take a "screenshot" of the ideas and images in my brain to include with my submissions! Alas, until that is a reality there's no substitute for putting the work in. Someday I'm hoping to be able to give my full attention and more time to inventing!

There's some good news coming from my rejections though. Two of my submissions were declined because other EN community members had made prior and better-developed submissions around the same basic concepts - concepts that have already caught C&D's interest (according to my feedback from EN).
