NEW SEARCH! Church & Dwight is looking for innovative simple and easy solutions to clean and freshen previously worn clothes between washings!

magurn's Avataren_staff_badge

Church & Dwight is a leader in Household and Personal Care Products with brands such as ARM & HAMMER™, OxiClean™, Orajel™, waterpik™ and more.

THEIR SUCCESS HAS BEEN DRIVEN BY AN ONGOING COMMITMENT TO INTRODUCING INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS DESIGNED TO SATISFY UNMET NEEDS WITH EFFECTIVE CONSUMER-CENTRIC SOLUTIONS.

TWO ADDITIONAL possible scenarios that your idea(s) could help solve:

Scenario #1:

You’ve just come home from work and are planning a quick turnaround to meet up with friends for dinner. When you look in the closet or drawers, you realize that your favorite “go to” outfit has already been worn, but it’s not so dirty and worn that it needs to be washed.

  • What are some fast, innovative, convenient, minimal effort solutions (other than applying a refresher spray or tossing the clothes into the dryer) that could provide acceptable cleaning and freshening, so you could feel good about wearing the clothes without having to worry about their appearance or smell?

Scenario #2:

You love the way your jeans look and feel even after wearing them a few times between washings. As a matter of fact, you try to avoid sending them through the wash as long as you can because of the extra wear and tear it puts on the jeans. Plus, it takes a while to get the comfy-ness back to where you like it. However, there comes a point when you’re concerned that dirt, stains and/or odors might be too much.

  • What are some innovative, convenient, minimal efforts solutions (other than applying a refresher spray or tossing the clothes into the dryer) that you could use to do to keep or make jeans cleaner and fresher between washings so they can go even longer before having to send them through the wash?

This is the first EN search I've ever seen that states that crowdfunding may be part of the evaluation process. That puts a little twist on it.

Didn't realize that this is the same company that licensed KJ's Splot invention under its OxiClean brand.

@KJ, your success and ENs execution, helped open up this opportunity for the rest of us.

Good point Derrick, and it occurs to me that Ken's "Splot" product may be a reference point of sorts for the kind of thing C&D is looking for in this new area.

I think you are spot on with that assessment Robert.  They said they wanted simple and easy, and Splot is a great example of that.

Question for Church & Dwight: ideally would products/devices use an existing Church and Dwight-made consumable (such as Arm & Hammer baking soda)? (as opposed to a brand new kind of consumable, or one not currently produced by Church & Dwight)

Another question for C&D: is there a high probability that Church & Dwight will use crowdfunding in the development of the finalist products or is that just one strategy they might employ?

Question for Chruch & Dwight:  Which category has the greatest need for innovation from an IP and sales standpoint?  Conversely, which category is strongest from an IP and sales standpoint?

Perhaps C&D could go so far as to take all of the categories in the search, and rank them in order from greatest need for innovation to the least.  This would be a helpful guide.

Another question for C&D:  Considering the statement in the search description:

  • Up to $50 for machines, devices, durable goods that would include a consumable item

Is it desireable to stay away from electronics?

I always have a few of these  (cleaning/laundry) type ideas floating around in my head... I think I was able to come up with something new, easy and interesting. - we'll see..?? Curious how many entries they get on avg. per search..?

Hi Katrina!

The number of ideas per search varies depending on the type of search and what is being asked. For searches that are a bit more niche, the totals are lower, but that doesn't mean the ideas aren't good.

In our Balloon Time search that just closed, for example, we did not have a ton of submissions, but those we did receive were great and many are going to presentation (stay tuned in that thread for updates).

Good morning to all! We've received responses from the Church & Dwight team on your questions! Please see the Q&As below! (Side note: due to the amount of text, these updates are spread across several posts - be sure to scroll to get the info!

Questions from Innovator Community:

Q: Ideally would products/devices use an existing Church and Dwight-made consumable (such as Arm & Hammer baking soda)? (as opposed to a brand new kind of consumable, or one not currently produced by Church & Dwight)

A. We would definitely have some additional interest in products that use existing consumables, especially iconic ones like baking soda. Having said that, the consumable does not have to be something that exists now. A new kind of consumable would definitely be of interest. However, creating actual formulas for the consumable is not a requirement at this time.

Q: Is there a high probability that Church & Dwight will use crowdfunding in the development of the finalist products or is that just one strategy they might employ?

A. The purpose of considering crowdfunding is not really about raising funds, but instead as a way to determine the strength of interest and potential of the new product(s).

Questions from the Innovator Community cont.:

Q: Which category has the greatest need for innovation from an IP and sales standpoint? Conversely, which category is strongest from an IP and sales standpoint?

Perhaps C&D could go so far as to take all of the categories in the search, and rank them in order from greatest need for innovation to the least. This would be a helpful guide.

A. Essentially, we’re attempting to create a new category that does not currently exist. This would be similar to what Swiffer did in household cleaning by offering people a fast and easy way to get floors acceptably clean between more heavy duty cleanings.

With regards to product functionality, whole garment cleaning and freshening are the most critical elements that should be provided.

Some statistics to note: Our estimates are that laundry detergents are ~$6B in annual sales, coin operated laundry is roughly ~$5B, and 3rd party laundry / dry cleaning services are roughly ~$9B annually

Q: Considering the statement in the search description:

Up to $50 for machines, devices, durable goods that would include a consumable item

Is it desirable to stay away from electronics?

A. Electronic devices are definitely under consideration. However, the $50 price point is intended to keep the devices/products affordable to mainstream consumer and consistent with Arm & Hammer’s heritage for always delivering great performance at a great value.

Questions from the Innovator Community - last post:

Q: Is Church & Dwight open to suggestions to use inside dresser drawers, hampers, etc.?

A. Yes. In addition to ideas that could work in places where clothes are currently being stored, we’re also open to storage options that could also help deliver cleaning and freshening during storage. We’re also open to ideas that might work in non-traditional, yet convenient places, such as bathrooms or dorm rooms.

We hope this additional information has helped inspire your next idea!

Best of luck to all!

I just submitted an idea.  I think that if I make 3 people laugh at my idea I should get $5 back.  It was something I came up with in less than 5 minutes. Took longer to fill out the form than it did to come up with idea and the drawing.

Ideally, the machine can be washed and dried with ultrasonic mud destruction (does not require washing powder), washing with high pressure nozzles (no rotation - careful attitude to laundry), filters (water saving).

This project is "stuck" for me because of another job. How to find partners?

Hi Nodar!

We cannot evaluate ideas shared through our public forums. In fact, we discourage innovators from sharing concepts here because these forums are public. If you feel you're idea is a fit for Church & Dwight, please submit to our innovation search by clicking on the link above.

I got 5 submissions in for this search, just under the wire. Now I've got to catch up with myself on a couple of them. I seem to always get lost in prototyping and experimenting and then don't have enough time to fully crystallize into a submission by the deadline.

Unfortunately those types of products are a not a fit for what Church & Dwight was looking for. That being said, you're always welcome to share your idea to our All Category Search for consideration.

The search just completed last night at midnight. The Edison Nation team will now take a week or two to complete all evaluations and work with the C&D team to schedule a formal presentation.

We will keep everyone updated on the timeline here in the official forum thread.
