Waiting for my ship to come in...

betzy's Avatarg8_badge

Literally and figuratively! I’m waiting for my ship to come in from China, carrying my newly created item! I’m thinking we have about 40 days to go to receive our cargo.

I’m so excited, nervous, anxious, and hopeful.

We’ve gone through the processes of conception, prototyping, market research, patent filing, business planning, procurring a manufacturer in China, finding a freight liner to deliver our shipment, etc. It’s taken a lot longer to get through each individual step, and included many ups and downs, but perserverance and determination, as well as dreams and hard work, are giving us a vision of a bright and fruitful future.

I want to stand upon housetops and scream out my invention so the whole world knows, but I must wait to be certain our product is of quality and ready to sell.

I trust my contact in China and am expecting great results.

40 days and counting…

Hi Marj,

OK, this is the scoop; At first I sent pics and specs (my project is iron work and welding) They tried three times to get the angles right, but couldn’t quite match my design. So I cautiously sent them my prototype to use as their master sample. They keep in constant contact with me and send pics and updates. Actually, I’ve gotten the best customer service ever from them. When they copied our prototype, the sample was exact as viewed in photos. I know, I know…but I really trust my contact and believe they will give me high quality work. I found them on a reputable international manufacturing site. Also, I searched high and low for a manufacturer in America and couldn’t find anyone that was capable or willing to do my project.

Anyway, hence the anxious and nervous part. But I really think I made the right choices…

Good question Marj.
Elzabeth, you didn’t mention an agent. I assume there is one and am curious about that experience.

Thank you for the encouraging words. I will definitely keep you updated on the progress.

As far as an agent goes, I’m not using one, I contacted the manufacturer myself. So far, the experiece with my contact has been above and beyond expectations. His customer service is excellent. Like I said, they attempted three times to perfect the master sample. And, truely, the samples were so close they may have been acceptable. But they decided to keep working on it until it was perfect. The whole time during that step, they kept in constant contact with me, communicating both good and bad results. I appreciate that because I knew they were working on my project. I didn’t have to try to guess why it wasn’t ready yet.

On the other hand, when trying to get my prototype made in America, I had the exact opposite experience with a certified engineer. He couldn’t figure out my project, but wouldn’t communicate that with me, so I kept wondering what happened to him. After a couple of months of trying to get an answer out of him, he finally told me he couldn’t do it and the problem was that I had distracted him with my enthusiasm! Funny stuff.

I’ll keep you updated on the progress and when all turns out well, I will give my manufacturer a shout out so others can use his service!

You go girl! Seriously! I’m glad to hear of others that are taking on the challenge. I totally hear what you are saying about US manufacturers. I used to be one of them as an employee, but am now one of them as the owner. I manufacture my own for now, and may import some day. US manufacturers (some, not all) are without a doubt, the most overpriced, self delusional, overpriced and under serving group. Not many left, and the few that remain are a mixed lot.

Anyhow, congrats and I hope they arrive exactly as you hope.

I join the others in wishing you well. You must have some stories to tell with respect to liability, insurance, customs and unexpected mishaps.

Thank you!

Yes, I have plenty of stories and am willing to tell to anyone who wants to listen. Careful, though, my friends at work (you know, the place I go to to earn a living until…“my ship comes in!”) tell me that my stories are much too long and detailed! That’s OK. If you guys want to know some of the experiences, just say the word!

But, to keep it short, the shipping company that I chose is taking care of all the import paperwork, duty fees, customs, etc. and she’s deliverying to my doorstep. Although, I think I’ll go to the port and sit on the dock when I know the ship is on it’s way. How cool is that—to watch your ship come in!

Wow…. I’m thoroughly impressed! “Hard Work” to say the least. Good on you Elizabeth! I hope the reaping reflects the sowing… if so your future will me ‘fruitful’ indeed!

What a daunting trek you undertook! I was staring at that forest around this time last year and trying to decide whether to take that first small step (GIANT LEAP!) into the thicket when I was led here. The idea of splitting the royalties in lieu of braving that forest was (and IS) very appealing and I am glad to have EN currently blazing the trail for my idea. I believe strongly that I will have to look no further but… there’s always that knowledge lurking right under the surface that I could well find myself again staring at that forest, alone and unsure. It’s an intimidating prospect and one I hope I never have to confront but… your post has taken some of the anxiety out of it for me. Thank you so much for sharing!

I look forward to updates and CAN’T WAIT to see your creation. Congrats on blazing your own trail and may these next 40 days pass quickly for you!

Thank you so much for all the great comments.

My ship will be coming into Portland, OR, and since I live fairly close by, I will drive up to see it come in! I’m so excited!!!

I haven’t purposefully ran the gammet on my own (of course I’ve had positive support from my loving husband and family), and sometimes I wish that somebody that really knows what they are doing would take the reigns from my hands and get this bad boy running, but the education that I’ve encompassed over the last several months is priceless.
I love every moment of this journey, even when I run across rejection and problems, because my life is full and exciting. The anticipation of what’s to come is definitely a natural high!
I like to say that I’m starting out in the mailroom learning every aspect of my business. That way, when Betzy becomes a billionaire, I’ll know what I’m talking about when my completely satisfied, happy, never tardy, no call ins, highly paid employees ask a question for me to answer!

This ride is totally thrilling!

Hi Elizabeth and welcome to EN. We are certainly glad you are here. Please share your stories when the time is right for you. We are like minded, so you won’t get the same reaction from us as your co-workers.

I am very excited for you and your family and I hope whatever it is you are bringing to market sells beyond your dreams. When you are ready to go, you stand on the EN rooftop and scream.

If you can, post pics of your ship coming into the port. Cool stuff.

Well Betzy, I couldn’t imagine something as exciting as actually being able to watch your ship Come to port, awesome. I am very very curious about your product after reading that no US manufacturer would take it on. Please keep us informed through this thread what is going on. Thanks. I hope to someday ask to hear your stories when & if I get to hop on a similar ride as yours. Good luck.

So I just noticed that you just became a member at the beginning of the month, out of curiosity, did you submit your product to EN (or any other)?

Hi Betzy,

I am so excited for you. I know exactly your situation. I had inquired before. I had also search for manufacturing here in US and could not find one or simply don’t have the resource. I also went the same route via having it made in China. My concern is like yours. Quality, quality, quality. To make my story short. I didn’t work out.

I would certainly love to hear your story as you are so generous want to share. I wish you everything good and hoping to hear a good news from you. I can’t wait to see your product on the market!

Elizabeth, Wow is all I can say and congrats! I too, as with most of us on EN want to tell people about our idea but can’t. We just have to wait until the final product is in our hands. As for China, I would be concerned about the quality too. I have had some good and some bad experiences working with China. Were you able to visit the manufactures facility either in person or online? Did you do your background and history check on the manufacture? In any regard, I wish you the very best, and hope your ship comes in soon!

FYI Yesterday I had some email issues-today, we’re up and running.

The only submission I’ve done so far on EN is the Daymond J challenge. I am to step 2 (is that R or G—-I haven’t yet figured out those terms).
Kathleen, I am excited, too, to have moved up one stage! Every step forward feels like such a success! Isn’t it fun!

As for my product, I’m hoping to launch May 1 and am currently working on my website and launch plans.
With funding pretty much used up, I’m going to start marketing by using email, in-store demos, in-home demos, and word of mouth.

I have faith that we can really grow with those few steps, but if we won a challenge…oh, boy, think of where we could go from there!!!

Thank you, everyone, for your interest in my journey. It’s exciting, educational, fun, frustrating, and glorious!!!

Congtats Elizabeth. I know what a process it is to get a good person in China that you can trust. Just a question for you though. Do you have a DVD presentation for your product? Is it something you are going to sell yourself, piece by piece or are you going to try to have it sold in stores? I only ask because I “WAS” going to go the same route you did on a product and all I would have done would have been to get a sample and a DVD (commercial basically) made first. Send out the DVD’s to potential buyers and order from the factory as I received purchase orders. If I was going to sell the product myself I would have done the same as you though. It’s a lot of effort on your part to get this far. I wish you all the best. And good job.

Hi William,

Thank you.

I don’t have a video yet of my project, but it is highly demonstratable and I plan on making one soon. For the moment, I don’t even have my prototype at hand because I sent it to China to use as a master sample.
I’m going to sell on my website and try to get my product into stores. I’ll start off with in-home demos and in-store demos. I’m hoping to line up an in-store demo for Mother’s Day weekend, which would be perfect for my product!

I found my manufacturer on an international manufacturing import/export site. They are rated by years with this website and feedback from customers. This company is highly rated with many years experience, plus they make and sell a lot of my type of product.

My shipper I found on the web. They ship all over the world and appear to be a bonafide and excellent freight liner. I put in contact my shipper with my manufacturer. They both have awesome customer service!

I’ve heard so many horror stories about quality and conduct dealing with China. Pray that my project will be the exception! I do have faith in them!

Anyway, living in a world of the world wide web (I just love Google), one can find anything! (except someone in America to take on my project…hmmmmmm. There probably is someone out there, but I’m diligent in my research and really couldn’t find a soul!)

Thanks for the great feedback inventors. I love this site with all the new friends that are truely interested in my journey! And, I in yours!

Wow. What an amazing journey (no pun intended)! Just curious, what quantity did you purchase? Also, are they doing the packaging as well, or do you need to do that yourself? Since your manufacturer deals in this industry, can they/will they be of any help making contacts with distributors/retailers to help promote and sell your product? Congrats and best of luck to you!!

Thanks again, everyone, for the encouraging words.

This site is really great for the friends we meet, walking similar paths, waiting, working, and praying for great results! We’re all on that journey, we all are big dreamers, but also, we take steps to achieve those dreams!

To answer your questions Andrew, my initial container is 20’, with 3400 units. It’s a small first order, but, it’s an order! It’s inventory! It’s the beginning of acheiving my big dreams! I wonder if you can tell I’m excited. I think I was fortunate that my manufacturer took on my project because of the size of my order. I think they usually prefer only bigger (40’ container) orders.

I haven’t spoken with my contact yet about hooking me up with his contacts. Maybe later on.
They are not doing the packaging for me, but I’ve spoken with a company here that has the facility to do it when I’m ready. First, I have to sell some product to have working revenue.
Initially, I’ll be selling on my website and doing in-home and in-store demos. Then, if the plan works out, the revenue from those sales will allow the purchase of my next bigger shipment, plus some advertising, packaging, etc.

Unless, of course, I get Daymond or The Shark Tank or EN to help me!

I’m planning for the least assistant and praying for the best results!

Today I saw a photo of thousands of peices of iron that will be used to make my product.

I didn’t think about it before, but when I saw the photo, I calculated in my mind that my initial order requires approximately 80,000 peices of iron that need to be welded together! Unbelievable!

The bags were stuffed with iron peices, ready to be welded, and there were Chinese characters printed on the bags. It was really cool.

To me, the bags appeared to be filled with gold!

A Utility Patent has been filed and we have a patent pending status. You know, when I first started watching Shark Tank and they’d talk about patents, I didn’t know the difference between Provisional, Design, Utility, or Patent Pending, but it all sounded so mysterious and glamorous! Now that I know all about the different types and we’ve filed a Utility Patent, it feels glamorous!

I was just thinking about the photo I received today. I think I can post it without jeopardizing any agreement on EN. I’ll do that after I write this, but to most, the photo will probably appear simple, uninteresting, and boring. To me, though, it represents hope, promise, and vision.

As far as disclosing my idea, email me and I’ll share, but I don’t think I should expose it outright on EN.

Mcargo was initially expected in Portland on April 23, but with some delays our new expected arrival date is May 18.

I’ve seen photos of my product and have been in contact with my manufacturer and shipper. From the way I read my tracking report, it appears that my shipment actually left Hong Kong a few weeks ago, arrived in LA, and left there this morning.

I received all kinds of legal documents from my manufacturer in the mail today.

This is really cool stuff.

I’m hoping to still try to get to “watch my ship come in”.

On a personal note:

This last month was riddled with tragedy in my family. My 7 month old grandson was brutally attacked by my daughter’s ex-boyfriend. Little Roy is still in Doernbecher, one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals, and overcoming many obstacles in his path. The doctors told us he never should have survived the trip to the hospital, let alone be able to eat, breathe, or have any function of his own. He is proving to be a miracle of God and with thousands of people praying for him around the world (including my manufacturer in China), he is glorifying God by all the advancements he’s making.
If you would like to read about his updates, you can view my facebook page at www.facebook.com/elizabeth.h.crouch.3 Just in case I wrote that address incorrectly, I’m on fb as Elizabeth Higbe Crouch.
