Has EN Recently Housecleaned?

crystaldiane's Avatar

Hi Folks, I have been off the forums for a while.  The good news is I have not beed idle.  Over the past months I have totally regrouped and am now selling several New designs of my product - I started out Designer - Had some unique features I thought - really felt  could take my product from a Handdcrafted sales model and scale into production. Alas, that stalled - and rather than spend my time redoing more and more prototypes I just decided to go back to where I started - afterall, people have been buying my little handcrafted items all along.

I just started my new Show Schedule - and have been super busy. Updated my website and am now finally offering some of my products online for sale - trying to figure out how to mesh with the 'super sellers' like Amazon Handmade, Etsy, Ebay.

So with that in mind and back to my title - where is all the great content?  I was searching for Packaing ideas and I can't seem to find any of Roger Browns posts, and others from folks that I have found very intrumental on the forums.

Im wondering where did this content go?  I am sure i am not the only one that benefited from these helpful items.  I hope nothing bad has happened to these folks in my absense.

Just wondering - can anyone elighten me?

Hi Crystal-Diane,

Edison Nation has not removed any content that was featured. As folks come and go to the site, content listings change. If someone removes their account, all their posts are also removed.

That being said, if there is specific content and/or questions anyone has for the Edison Nation team about content you'd like us to cover, please post those requests here and we'll add to our content queue.

Thanks!

Hi Michelle, guess I was spoiled, I used to do some wildcard searchs - its just odd that everything seemed to go away at the same time.  I really enjoyed Rogers posts, Sarah of course - she seems a bright lady too with a very inventive mind.  Others like Frank, and such.  Have they moved on?  Sigh.  Well, there is no shortage of other inventors but if they have I sure will miss the insight of experience and previous successes. I think a lot of us could really use that ongoing guidence from more experienced people than ourselves.  If the the content like Rogers Ebook is Lost from the site - it seems a huge loss to the community at large. As you know the process of inventing is one of evolution - there is not a straight line from A to B - Please if you can, have them return to the organic searches. Thanks!

Good morning Crystal-Diane,

When someone chooses to remove their account, their posts are removed along with that account.

You are welcome to reach out to contact Roger on rogerbrown.net

In the interim, as I mentioned, the EN team will be providing new content in the coming weeks/months within both the forums and the Edison Nation Blog.

Thank you.

Hi Leo, in my case I do include directions (Michelle? Can I post a photo of my package here? Or not - Im now selling and in public so disclousre is not a issue - it might be helpful to others - but Im not sure thats allowed on the forum --- I actually have a interesting tale to share my path to market so far)  and I include a storage pouch and a thank you note, along with a 'coupon' that is good for various offers - I try to engage my customer everywher I can through social Media though honestly Facebook totally confuses me!  I have not yet jumped into any other Social Media platforms like Twitter or Pinterest - I am still trying to figure out where my 'ideal customer' hangs out online - have some ideas about that I am working on though.

As for touch I also include something if they put a note on my Facebook page or refer friends. I am just now getting into the marketing and promotion side the hosting company I use - and trying to learn a lot of new apps related to marketing.  I did not know about the higher fees for Amazon during those months OUCH already its terribly pricy - I am slowly working my way through the how to videos - its a lot to take in and a language I dont totally understand  - Especially the world of Google YIKES - However  I have yet to figure it compared to my current sales model. I think I could probably start a new thread on just these Sales Portals but for me the most concerning thing is you cannot 'market' directly to your customer - its actually thier customer.  Im at a bit of a crossroad on these things.

Also folks As Michelle said you can get Rogers lessons his website and blog (wont let me post the link here but you can look it up or reference Michelles post)   Its to bad that our other MIA people like Frank and Sarah  great info is just gone.  Sigh. We need all the help we can get! Best. CD

If you have questions about Etsy let me know. My Daughter has had a shop for several years. She was featured in Buzzfeed 3 times and Cosmo once.

We watched her sales soar and it was very exciting. Unfortunately Etsy made some changes to which the category for her products no longer exists and everything has been a struggle since.

I doubt most will have that problem though.

(Also if you know anyone on Etsy or even through my Daughter, you can get a referral and 40 free listings. It's a great way to start out, even though it can take several months before products actually start selling.)

Hi guys!

In my time here at EN, I have seen folks come and go. Some people decide to move forward, some decide to dedicate more time to other things, etc. Their reasoning is beyond our control, and while we are sad that some folks are choosing to no longer participate, they are always welcome back.

That being said, we encourage all those who are in our community to participate and share their knowledge with fellow inventors, and we'll continue to work to provide everyone resources and learning opportunities both through the forums and through our other channels.

Wishing everyone a great week!

Good afternoon to all.

Regarding those that have opted to leave Edison Nation...

The purpose of Edison Nation is to provide our innovator community the most opportunities for success for their product concepts. Whether that is through product evaluation or through the resources we share within our forums, blogs and social media.

As outlined within the forum thread guidelines, comments that are in violation of the guidelines will be removed/muted. If there are members that decided to leave the community following their comments being removed and/or muted, I'm sorry that they felt that way. No one was forced out of the community or forced to remove their accounts.

As the Communications Director of Edison Nation, I take responsibility of any actions made by the Edison Nation team that may have been deemed offensive or caused folks to be upset. I apologize for any misunderstandings. The situation with Michael and his concerns around infringement of an idea should have been handled better by me and I apologize again for that. It has sparked immediate efforts and a new policy on handling such matters that is now noted within the forum threads and our FAQs.

I understand that for those who are no longer participating, this may fall on deaf ears, but our doors are always open. That being said, I respect and understand anyone's personal needs to move on.

If community members have issues with anyone or anything in particular, please send a direct message to me or email me and I will do everything in my power to resolve the situation.

It is the goal of the Edison Nation forums to provide an inclusive environment where our community members can collaborate in a healthy, positive, inclusive manner, and we will continue to do so with each and every post.

Thank you.

Hi Michael,

A quick point of clarification around your comment that you had not heard anything from Scott regarding the infringement concerns you expressed.

Without going into detail and sharing any confidential details of the situation, Scott sent a communication to you regarding his efforts to investigate the issue on October 25. Within the communication, he outlined the current status and detailed his conversations with the company in question. You responded to that email on the same day.

If you have any additional questions or comments regarding this matter, please reach out to Scott and I and we'll address them. In fact, Scott even indicated in the closing of his email,

"I will keep on top of any additional news/learnings on the matter and if there is anything I can help you with in regards to it, please don't hesitate to ask."

I understand that you have opted to pursue other avenues for future ideas, and while it is not our ultimate goal, I respect that decision. As I outlined in my last comment, I regret that the situation was not handled more quickly and effectively and I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused you or anyone else. We've established a new policy and are working each and every day to continue to improve ourselves, our community and our company.

If you have any other questions or have been made aware of any other developments we can assist with, please send an email and we'll be happy to help in any way we can.

Thank you!

Dear Michael,

When a member is muted, all of their comments, in turn, are muted automatically. We currently do not have the ability to mute only one or two posts.

During the time a member is muted, the Edison Nation team meets to discuss next steps and determine the best course of action. Frank opted to remove his account during this evaluation time. When someone deletes their account on Edison Nation, everything, including any submissions, comments, personal details, is also deleted immediately per our terms and conditions.

We did not delete anyone ourselves or ask them to leave the community, and again, I do personally take responsibility for any actions made by our team that caused folks to leave.

Thank you.

Hi Michael,

Glad it could clarify and I understand why you want more information.

When members are blocked, similar to how Facebook handles users, the user themselves continues to see their own posts since the posts have not been deleted. If after our review, it is determined that a post or posts are in violation of any policies and/or it is better for the posts to be removed, that action is taken and the user is unmuted which would then result in all remaining posts to be seen.

Hi Michael,

Unless there is a glitch in our system, once a post is deleted, it is removed completely from the system - it should no longer be visible to anyone.

If a user is muted, they will see all active/non-deleted posts on their account only.

I will put this to our web team to review further, but this is how the system should be operating.

If anyone has any comments or details specifically about their accounts that they'd like me to review further, I'd be happy to address them personally via email.

Thank you.

Sometimes we get so worried about secrecy that we lose sight of the big picture. I've seen other people come out with ideas I kept secret for too long and no good reason. If you're really worried about someone stealing your idea, just file a provisional patent. Doesn't matter if it's sloppy. It is an official record that could prove the idea was yours. Then you can worry less about someone stealing it, and focus more on getting it made, marketed, licensed, etc.

Rafael,

While I almost entirely agree with you, an inventor should be concerned with filing a well written PPA though. If it's complete S**t and Sloppy like a high school kid wrote it, it certainly will not help in the long run. It's a bit of a game considering all, that is to be considered. Most Patents 3% or less actually have any commercialization or mass-produced type of prodcut behind them that makes any money above $0. (so they say)

I have done my own reasearch for years on and off as a nerdy type of guy and have concluded: one can walk into almost every major big-box store in America (or anyhwere in the world, as I have traveled extensivly) at this point and if you look at any modestly priced consumer good, flip it over and read the tiny fine print.... you will usually not see a Patent # associated with it.

It's the industry trend to be 1st to Market! That's the golden rule I have been reading about that specific subject for 5+ years or more, and while no-one can argue the logic there; it is likely companies will copy and reproduce anyones "new" product design with no shame what-so-ever now-a-days.

Spending $5,000-15,000 or more on a Patent (to ward off most copiers) only makes sense if its going be worth more than that in the long run. Many major companies will not even look at an email or return a phone call from a common man/inventor if they do not have a published Patent, but yet many more will consider it with a PPA, if the circumstances are right and all the ducks are lining up.

I kindof reminds me dating?? lol, it really does, its really all about the person to person relationship many times and *that can be very tough to find!

I agree with what you are saying about throwing down the flag in the sand and making a claim on what is, the system is going through a lot of unfavorable changes for awhile "First to Invent, I mean First to Patent." Give oneselves a leg-up and write it the right way in the 1st round, or as close as possible.

vitaminguy's Avatargold

Hi Chase, I'm thinking we are in agreement. Not totally sure, since you covered a lot of ground. I think that the way you write your PPA depends on your invention and your needs. The PPA was initially envisioned to give the little guy a way of claiming priority. Sure you could inadvertently fail to cover important variations of your invention, fail to make your scope wide enough, fail on multiple levels. But a reasonably intelligent inventor should be able to describe what they believe is novel about their invention in as many paragraphs and illustrations as it takes, and submit it as a PPA. If you write a poor PPA that basically describes your novel idea, you can at the very least show that you had the idea first. And the regulation on patents is "first inventor to file." That means you actually have to have invented it. If I invent something and tell my friend, and then he files for a patent, he doesn't have the rights to the invention because he was first to file, but not first to invent. If I can produce a filed PPA showing that I described it first, then it would be monumentally difficult for him to claim ownership, since he clearly got the idea from me. PPAs are not reviewed or even looked at until a patent is filed or unless there is a legal quarrel about priority. Both situations are highly unlikely events for most amateur inventors. And an inventor here at EN, who may be worried that his or her idea would be stolen, would only be interested in a PPA to assuage their own fears that EN would mishandle the information and allow someone to steal their idea. For some reason I get the sense that invention pilferers have little interest in scouring EN files in search of an invention to steal. So a PPA, well-written or poorly written, simply enables an EN inventor to feel comfortable that their ideas are safe.

rpontius's Avatarg8_badge

Rafael - I get the thrust of what you are saying, but I thought I'd mention a little bit of a different scenario/reasoning for getting a PPA pre-submission. I am planning an EN submission (for Apothecary Products) based on an invention that will be the subject of a PPA. In my case my reasoning is NOT that I need assurance my idea is safe - I don't have that concern about EN. The reason I'm doing it is: 1) to establish a priority date for the benefit of a potential licensee via EN (and in turn myself) and/or 2) establish a priority date for myself in the event the invention is not licensed and I go for it alone and apply for a non-provisional patent.

There may be a bunch of other good reasons for submitting an invention with a PPA, including people who already have a PPA before discovering EN or a person who tries to license their invention on their own for months and then decides they need help. In any event, I think there are a lot of good reasons to submit inventions to EN with a PPA beyond wanting to feel comfortable your ideas are safe.

R.A.

Well written, thank you for a response and expanded touch on the question. I agree with 90% of what you said. I think a well written and proper application in the native language of the country that it is presented to, and filed in, is an important fact. The U.S.A. does not cover the entire globe and there are quite frankly very little rules on who can submit an application for a Provisional Patent Application (PPA)

If, you+ and a spouse make under a $165,000 a year - which most people do. (at this point of writing) Nearly Anyone can submit for a low cost - whatever they want- in any format- grossly written - unfactual - make believe or not - FOR $65 to the USA Government and claim they are Patent Pending... and or etc...

That does not establish anything if we all are really being real here...

Do it right the 1st time...

It seems to be a big trend with inventors I know to rely upon trade secret measures and speed to market (and/or licensing) to protect their ideas, rather than patenting. The reasoning is that most independent inventors couldn't afford to prosecute infringements on granted patents anyway.

As Michael points out, adding to this is the problem that the patent litigation process can be out of sync with the market life of the product.

Roger Brown crystallized this idea really well when he said something about a lot of patents being worthless and boiling down to expensive ego boosts for inventors of products that may be of dubious marketability in the end.

Hi Rosa!

Earlier today the site was down due to a server issue that has now been resolved. It has nothing to do with the previous departure of folks from our community.

As I have outlined previously in this thread and others, the choice of members to move on a different path beyond Edison Nation is entirely their decision - not the result of a deletion of membership from the Edison Nation team.

From a community perspective, we are continually working to maintain our mission of educating our community, opening the doors of communication between members.

Thank you, and thank everyone for their patience while the web team worked to get the server issue sorted, as well as to those who reported the issue to our team via support.

Good morning Rosa,

First, I wanted to address your comment that the EN team did not reach out to those who chose to leave the community. This is inaccurate. It is our process to review circumstances around all those who opt to downgrade or delete their accounts. I have had conversations with some folks who have opted to leave the community. As I have mentioned in previous threads, people decide to move on for different reasons. In all cases however, there is no ill will from the Edison Nation team on anyone’s decision.

We understand that everyone’s choices are personal and always advocate that anyone is welcome back at any time. They are also welcome to reach out me personally via email or through questions to discuss any concerns or issues they may have.

On another note, we value all members of our community and while some folks have moved on, there are many talented and wonderful people that are fantastic resources available via the forums that you are welcome to connect with and learn from as I have seen you are already doing in other threads.

We are also making changes to how our official resources are posted. This past week we started creating one thread for each InvENting 101 post to ensure resources are accessible and that community members can jump in with comments and suggestions  based on the subject matter.

We do not share personal contact information in these forums but if you’d like to get in touch with Roger you can reach out via his website on rogerbrown.net.

Thank you and I wish you the best.

Hi Rosa,

Thought I'd jump in here. What I have to say is for you and everyone else following this thread.

I have to agree with Michelle. And no, I'm not just sucking up to EN.

I am an administrator in another, although smaller, forum.

People do leave of their own accord. In "my" forum we have people come and go all of the time. Some, especially long time members, will state their reasons, others will not. We do not pry into their reasoning, we just accept the fact that they have left and hope that they return.

Just recently we have had a very long time member, almost from day one, suddenly "disappear". He has be absent for almost a year mow. Whatever his reasons, and to my knowledge, he has not shared them with anyone that I know of.

People praise and/or criticize forum policy and administration all of the time. The ones that criticize often say that we have no idea of what we are doing and that they can do a much better job in their sleep.

To the first part, I'd honestly have to agree. We are amarteures at this and we don't always know what we are doing. But what we are doing is our best.

As to the second part I simply state...  "Good for you. I will heartily support any efforts on your part to get your own forum up and running.".

It takes a lot of time and effort to keep a good forum up and running and sometimes a little salt and vinager must be accepted.

I agree with williamj.....For what it's worth.. As I've mentioned before, I have been a member here for almost ten years and have seen MANY members come and go (and return in many instances)..These types of conversations are not new. Newer members join and it's their only point of reference, so when someone leaves it appears to be a major issue. Just part of the normal ebb and flow of the community.

I should also add.. it seems to me the end of year tends to slow down some due to holiday season...

My two cents!

As Michelle has repeatedly stated people come and people go, and while we hate to see people go, we absolutely respect their decisions and I can advise that Michelle has had communications with some of the individuals that you mention, but we also will not hound a former member of our community if they choose to leave and pursue other options.

Perhaps if  you have concerns that we can't seem to address, than Edison Nation may not be for you.

As you have seen in other forums Michelle has no issue with providing information on how folks can reach Roger, yet you seem to be dwelling on an issue that Michelle has spoken to numerous times.
